I'm posting this in the hope that some can actually understand what I'm going on about (because I don't), and offer some help. In short, the statement "Let's get the school into the cloud" has been uttered! So at the risk of making myself look dumb, I'm asking "What does that actually mean?" In my mind, this essentially means - Onsite: Physical/VM servers, Shared drives on a server, MS Office installed (or already O365) Move to cloud: Azure AD, Onedrive for documents/shares, Office365 That is it in its simplest form. The question is, how right/wrong is that? And does anyone have a sort of generic 'prerequesite checklist' that I can look thru and say "I need to do this and that before migration to the cloud can even be considered." Further, does anyone have a 'cloud migration project plan' they might be able to share, that I can then tweak to suit my case? I hope all that makes sense. Feel free to correct everything that's wrong (all of it?) and straighten out my thinking.

Hi all I have a school where the a TA doesn't have access to a school calendar. I have suggested the calendar just needs to be shared with the TA, but they can't seem to make that happen. I'm not too familiar with o365 and not back at the school until mid next week. I can log into the their o365 admin center but can't see where to view the calendars they have, and how to share them. Could anyone please help by pointing me in the right direction? I have had a look at Org Settings > Calendar, and sharing is enabled but I can't see where I am supposed to be able to view any calendars they already have etc, Sorry to be a bit thick

Hi all I've been out of IT for a few years and just looking to get back into it. I was recently looking at AD structure in a handful of Primary schools and on first glance it seems a bit of a mess - as does GP. I'm interested to see how others have set up their AD structure, or based on things you have learned from the existing one .. what you would change. I guess I'm kinda looking for a 'best way to set it up' I realise I can't just go change it all, but I would like to put some projects in place to make some changes over the coming months. Feel free to include some screenshots with obvious personal info hidden. Thanks

Why can’t two domains use the same network if DHCP is split to manage it? Server 1: abc.com 192.168.1.1 DHCP: 192.168.1.2 - 125 Server 2: xyz.com 192.168.1.254 DHCP: 192.168.126 - 253 All on the same physical network in the same building, and users choose which domain, at login. Or does that all fall apart because windows will only allow a computer to be a member of one domain?

Scenario: In one building is two different business owned by the same people. There is two different servers - one for each business. Jane is logged into Company-A and Peter is logged into Company-B. How do I install a print server that will allow both Companies to use? (It’s unknown if the servers have entirely different IP address networks)

Used to use Synel Industries door access system in a previous school, which also had their fire alarm link .. so as soon as the fire alarm went off it would print a roll call in the admin office. Does anyone know of an alternative setup? I’m only looking for a way to link the fire alarm to a server (somehow) to have it auto print who’s on site

I gave up running a server at home too. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that a large percentage of School techies get excited about server stuff when getting into the field and set up a server at home as a learning tool ... til we are done learning from it or the novelty wears off. Then it sits in a corner and collects dust - that's what happened with me. I recently bought a HP Gen8 Microserver to run XPEnology as a home NAS. More than enough for all the movies and other data we have.

Is iTunes installed? I wasn't aware anything does show up without iTunes being installed (maybe wrong).

Absolutely! The host OS will essentially sit idle for most of the time so is better on HDD (if you haven't enough SSD), and the VMs doing all the work will be much better on SSD. 250Gb isn't huge and you could soon run low on SSD space, depending on how many VMs you have and what you're doing with them. You should def look at dynamic disk size when setting VMs up, so they use minimum disk space first and take more as they need it. Additionally, as a space saver, for non-critical VMs such as file and print etc. (defo NOT DC!) you might like to consider using a differencing disk set up, so you only have one OS VHDX that can be used by multiple VMs.

What you would want to aim for is to install Windows Server 2012R2 and Hyper-V, then set up as many VMs as you can to virtualise everything. Keep the host OS simply for management of Hyper-V and the hardware. VM1 = DC, DNS VM2 = DHCP VM3 = Exch VM4 = File server VM5 = Print server etc. With VMs you can split everything out, rather than have all roles on one server. Hyper-V 2012R2 is a type 1 hypervisor, so it sits directly on the hardware and Windows Server OS sits on top, and it is extremely efficient with hardware resources - helped by you and your management of it thru the GUI. However, this is governed by your hardware spec and disk space, so you may have to condense things if you find the hardware is limiting, etc. With regard to NICs, if you can add more then you would definitely want to do that as this would give options for NIC teaming or traffic separation.

Download speed is measured in bits, always has been. That would be like banning ppl from using Megabytes coz we use Giga/terabytes now.

From what I remember of similar setups, previously, it sounds like much the same speed as I was getting. What backup software you using? How are the NICs teamed? And does the switch support teaming?

Qualifications and experience may work well together or go hand in hand, but I'll take experience over qualifications. Notice how all job ads say '.. or equivalent experience' ? Qualifications show you did a course and passed a test. Doesn't mean you can do the job.

Indeed! Veeam does not work with free version of ESXi. Veeam free is quite basic (it will do a full backup but doesn't do incremental, and i don't think it's great with scheduling either!), tho it should connect OK, unless it's the ESXi free it's having a problem with. I can confirm Veeam free works with Hyper-V, if that's of interest to you.

Sounds like this was filled before it was even advertised. What a waste of time that turned out to be!
