  1. Me too. I'm soo close I can almost feel the free @VeryPC mug! I wager I'll be putting in an order within the next 2 weeks
  2. Does anyone know - how to / if you can - disable the Apps screen in 8.1 ? I am happy to set up tiles on the Start screen and have all users using that, but i dont want them scrolling down to the Apps screen. They dont need it, basically. They'll have tiles
  3. hmm, that changes things a bit then - I read more than once that it's lost if the OS fails. Might have to rethink my strategy for the summer now
  4. Thought about it then decided against it. Im thinking .. if the OS goes pear shaped so does the storage space. I'll stick with RAID for now. Love the idea that you can simply add/remove disks tho.
  5. If .local isnt a good idea, could always use local. ie: local.schoolname.sch.uk
  6. This site could be mighty useful: SS64 | Command line reference
  7. Gave up coffee ages ago. Switched to break fluid and never looked back. That sh!t's got some kick!
  8. Good point! And this is why we have Edugeek .. coz sometimes, our brains turn to mush!!
  9. Just purchased a new server, installed 2012 R2 and virtualised all other servers onto it. Next plan is to buy another server, install 2012 R2 and set them up with Hyper-V Replica .. So my thinking is, if every hour the VMs are updated on the replica server, is there a need for separate backup (ie: backup exec / veeam) ? Im thinking i might just back up user files, in case of file loss, and leave it at that. Thoughts?
  10. Is there a local user with same name causing it to throw a wobbly? Also, maybe create the user with another name then rename AD username etc, keeping the initial home folder details .. Might work.
  11. I don't have .man profiles. I create profile as a local admin account then copy it to Default User in Netlogon
  12. I have a separate OU for servers. All other computers are under Workstations OU followed by the room. No separate OUs for staff/student computers as they often use the same. Start menus are loaded according to who logs on.
  13. Stranded is a whole lot easier with RJ45 crimping too.
  14. Been 'messing about' on drums for about 3 years. I have a Roland digital set and I just plug mp3's into it and play along. Got some Queen tracks with the drums removed (somewhere!) which I used to have immense fun on. I WAS Roger Taylor in that moment! Rigged it up to Rockband too, that was fun
  15. By looks of it, Veeam free edition doesn't restore individual guest files. Am i reading that right? So if someone loses a Word doc I cant restore it? I had plans on having the servers running as VMs, with user Docs and shares outside the VMs (so they are simply using space on the host drives). This was because Hyper-V doesnt give back space inside VHDs from deleted files, without compressing - which you cant do whilst the guest server is running. Or has this all changed in 2012 R2 ?

    VHD Boot

I assume doing this is as simple as copying a vhd to all the computers? But how does that work with Computer Name .. is it just a case of renaming each one to suit?
  17. ......
  18. I have 3 shortcuts pinned to the start screen on 8.1 They are all websites by way of "..Program Files\Google Chrome\chrome.exe http://url.com" But they all show as a google icon. Sooo confusing for teachers! (Guaranteed they WILL actually use it for Google homepage and ask why some other page comes up every time!) The 'change icon' button via the shortcut properties doesnt seem to have any effect on the start screen Anyone know how to change the icon for URLs on the start screen?

    VHD Boot

Think i'll have a close look at this. Thanks
  20. Thanks guys. MusicBrainz gets my vote - not only does it tag them, it also renames the files and moves them to 'x' location when done!
  21. Hi All I have a herd of mp3 files named: Track 1,Track 2 etc. I'm looking for suitable software that can identify the tracks and auto ID3 tag them correctly. Anyone got any suggestions?
  22. The first suggestion wasn't to change the SSID, it was to add another one .. which could work, depends how your router handles them. A second SSID should be assigned a different IP to the Primary SSID. ie: #1 = 192.168.1.2 and #2 = 192.168.2.2 etc Could you not set up a wireless router between the WAN port on you internal firewall and your internet connection? That would allow them internet access without access to your network. The router could also handle all DHCP requests too.
  23. doesnt Chrome have built in pdf now?
  24. We used IJT a while ago - what a nightmare! Never again!! As others have pointed out too
  25. Check you haven't a rogue 'Deny' somewhere
