  1. tbh the mac vs PC argument has been done to death, Value for Money shouldn't be seen as just a cost exercise. Education isn't about being an exam factory but making sure Students leave with a balance of skills/knowledge/experiences/Results to set them up for there adult life. If you think giving them a restricted view point on the world is the best approach then stick to your guns.
  2. resolved latest NBI was created with latest DS and now working great
  3. we now have some new iMacs 12,1 (new Thunderbolt model) to replace our AWOL 11,2 imacs. 1 of them came with 10.6 installed so updated the netboot image to boot the macs from as the 10.6.6 was predictably unsuccessful at booting the machines. anyone successfully used Deploystudio to deploy Snow Leopard to the new TB iMacs? Boot times are x10 what they should. and the mouse cursor constantly freezes so selecting a workflow is impossible. Anyone any ideas?
  4. Siri will be on 4gs only due to the cpu and memory requirements. read something syaing it needed a dual core phone and 1gig ram?

    Lock up your Macs

I've also read the same thing, but heard different stories in the actual supply chain of recovered macs.

    Lock up your Macs

yeah 1st thing I did the biggest thing that annoys me.... we are so bloody busy with a man down (and a massive backlog due to being off ill for a week too) 1 more job to do! and opening week all this week, grrrrr. the funniest thing they came prepared by picking a small car (VW Lupo) im guessing so they could get closer to the building by passing bollards etc

    Lock up your Macs

Yesterday we had 2 guys break into our shiny new building and steal 19 iMacs. in and out 6 mins (although they had been probing the various gates and waiting for the all clear for over 30 minutes). after discussing with 1 of our suppliers of apple kit apparently there is a Gang actively targeting schools with apple kit and travelling around the East Midlands area.
  8. Question is can you get on at silly o'clock? In some ways I am grateful for me and The finace team being overloaded with new stuff and haven't rolled out our cashless catering for 6 months (new building) They've had a new finace package to get used to, academy status and a federation with a primary to sort (add in the joys of new it systems and me signed off by the doc for a week!)
  9. its amazing how hard it is to find these bloody keys, then i remembered about this sticky!!! thanks to ZH better late than never
  10. Could explain why it didn't work for me too of course I never bothered hanging around at night to find out why!
  11. one thing i really like about cmis. Install it on a share and all you have to do is provide a shortcut to it for your users. makes updating a breeze. Core Admin staff get access to the Admin app here, 95% of staff only use ePortal which is the web front end which has everything they need.
  12. funny that, just asked a similar thing via our IT supplier (1st year support contract) but for CMIS (guess it should be the same)
  13. 1st thing to do is sync with 1 machine, set up iTunes and an iPad. Do a backup + sync, plug next iPad setup as new, restore from iPad 1 backup, sync apps then apply iPhone config tool policy. Only problem I have come across is if you lock them down so students can't install apps you have to remove the lockdown policy before you can sync apps.
  14. Initially our new network was a /20 but as we started slicing up the subneta for our vlans it was amazing how quick we ran out of space(allowing for potential growth in anyone subnet) in the end needing a little bit more and now setup for a /19. Add in personal devices into the mix and the number of ip's you need grow very quickly!!
  15. Sorry but you should see 3 year olds use iOS devices. Might chage your point if view. My daughter 2.5 will blow yOu away what she can do on mine.
  16. perhaps if enough people pester them they might start to change their mind.... perhaps the answer is not that the ipad belongs in the classroom but its a great tool while on your wifi enabled schools buses
  17. My Office gets a little warm in the summer though (too much glass) oh and Library Helpdesk
  18. create a distrubtion list and forward to that add your 2 users to the distrubition list, job done?
  19. I dont think many IT Depts would notice, its just sods law we've moved into a new building, new printers and no "old stock" to fall back on. but you can guess who's printers are still on back order? The princpals and the college managers for the past month!
  20. Anyone experiencing a shortage? We've been experiencing long delays on some of our toner deliveries, especially black toner on smaller printers. Apparently canon manufacture hp toner and all fActories are in japan!
  21. You need to have a higher aperture (actually it's a lower aperture but the number is higher ) works like your iris in your eye Problem with this is you have to shoot with a slower shutter speed or higher iso to allow enough light in so it's exposed correctly
  22. not true, there can be local infleunces on house prices. New Road being planned in your back garden kills the value of your house (extreme example) or the case of our new school being in the way of a bunch of houses that had nice open field views.
  23. Follow plexars advice, as the guy that will take the rap if my lvl 1 techs mess things up in ad, other than creating a new account or resetting passwords I wouldn't want them making changes to a live AD without them first proving they know the basics. So piCk yourself up (no one else will,) dust yourself off and go and teach yourself so next time you go for interview you know about current technologies (don't wait for someone else to teach you). Ps sorry if this sounds like I'm having a go, really I'm not just trying to tell you how it is
  24. I'd agree with what nephilim says. Windows 7 is the gamers 1st choice os and Any serious gamer wouldn't be seen running less than 3gb ram so 64bit it is.
  25. ok i might seem a little crazy...... but anyone know how i could easily deploy the XPS Document Writer to all machines? we have been investigating an issue with "No printers installed" with 32bit office 2010 on windows 7 64bit. as it happens randomly its been very hard to work out whats been going on. 64Bit office solves the issue but we don't want to go down this route (500+ 64bit machines fun fun fun) XPS, PDF printers etc were orginally a part of our disk images and removed via GPO to keep things clean. it seems after alot of investigation having a local printer installed seems to give office time to poll what network printers are installed. so anyone know what settings are required for an XPS document writer???
