1st question whats your budget usually each year?

we have a very large server room with a 5m ceiling,during one of the coldest days of this winter the entire buildings Cooling happened to be reconfigured(this was pre-Practical Completion thankfully), they forgot to take the server room off the daily power down of air con, 2 hours later the sever room was one big cooker. Our HP San was the 1st thing to fail... thankfully one of our guys checked on the server room before going home that night so nothing else got cooked. so moral of the storey. it doesn't take a summer day to cook a server room with no air con! IF involved in meetings with builders make sure minutes of meetings are 100% accurate of what was discussed/agreed and raise it when offcial minutes of the meeting are released if they are wrong. Get involved in the position of power and data WHEN its being installed, make sure any drawings are "as fitted" and of a large enough scale to take measurements (approx 1 room per A3/A4) this should prevent any arguements over positions of power and data later on (builders will never ask you if a drawing is not clear enough) they'll just make their own random dicision. Give yourself plenty of time to complete migration tasks, it always takes longer than expected, do not ram your day with appointments leading up to, during and after the move as you'll find your users very very needy during this time and any IT contractors will require alot of your time.

In our new building we have Paxton net2, eastrace managing the cards with AD/cmis integration and another 3rd party working on writing a custom app to get Paxton data back into cmis for e-reg at our 2 entry points.

Sadly the reason you write an aup is not because you don't trust them, but so they can't turn around and say "you didn't say I couldn't do that" during disciplinary action. It's happened here, now we have 2 aup's. 1 for staff/students and 1 extra for it staff (which I also Sign)

How do you manage the chance of staff leaving all their docs, emails etc potentially easily accessible by students? Especially with single sign on etc I am expecting this to be a big issue.

Even if you are not taking on a managed service, the it budget pays for Professional fees. From That man who comes and sticks a box on the desk to the it suppliers project managers time and any failed deliveries. Thankfully any delays to IT rollout due to construction delays are reclaimed from the building contractors. It really is amazing to see how fast costs can rise.

Also a nice tip is to open the connection file using the shortcut to reduce the need for staff to then choose file menu > yourlast.cdb Off the top of my head I think you just \\path\admin.exe "path to cdb file" in the shortcut

Next your going to say Serco won't support cmis running on hyper-v and what your also suggesting is that facility admin is yet to be supported on win7 64bit aswell? Hope this isn't going to take aslong as support for ie7!!

Doing almost same thing right now. Setup 2008r2 server/s Get SQL setup with a Cmis_admin database Serco engineers default method is to connect to the database using a account named STUD_ADMIN Install admin Create new connection file using the above SQL account Let admin create the blank table structure Create a temp data set I use 0000/0001 or something like that. Install licence key. Go to your old live system, load up admin, make sure no staff are connected Create a backup of all datasets Creates backup of templates Restore both into new admin system Now setup eportal Test, test, test again When happy time to do final backup and turn off old eportal and database server. Restore latest backup to new system. Restart eportal Done (I believe it is supported on r2)

Here you go some stats for you based on term 1 559 requests 1hr close rate 50%, 24hrs 84%, 5 days 92% bad term for us, 1 man down, 1 tech now does 4 lessons a week and myself meeting after meeting for our new campus It's also scary how much time you can spend just filling out requests etc!!!

Version 5 is a a great update. i run our current production version in a VM on my admin machine (quad core/4gig/win7 64bit) with another VM for our library system (MLS.net) and it runs so much quicker than it used to. Currently in the middle of setting up a clean install of Spiceworks in our spanking new network and have given it a dedicated hyper-v VM and i am very happy with its performance!!! (pre version 4 was really slow). might even get away without installing an external collector, although i'll see depending upon how it handles when we have all the devices up and running. built in password changing is a real win when you intergrate with AD (5 min job).

one thing i like about HP printers, you can some times use other model drivers to get them working. even had a old 4200 printer replaced with P4015n i think it was and gave it the same IP and all worked fine!

I guess the idea behind it is to ensure every subject has the correct amount of time. For example giving Ict might need 3 lessons over a 2 week period but 4 is too many. 2 week timetable allows that finer control and flexabilty.this would prevent ict loosing or gaining too much time. Btw our school had been doing a 2 week timetable for 15years.

in general settings on the iphone itself there is a way of wiping it to default settings.

(had to rush to a meeting) Just some notes on my survey, we use survey monkey and have separate collectors for each target group. Survey results help form the basis of the colleges development plan, catering and the fm team also do the same. We have about 6 different surveys over the year in the college covering different areas of the college so keep them to 1 a year to prevent people getting frustrated with too many. You do have to prep staff a little before doing them, explain why. You could always put everyone who completes into a prize draw as an assentive.

I believe MS Licencing terms of WSUS forbid external access(i asked the question a month or so ago) although it seems using a VPN is an option.
