After three years in a Desktop support role at a local seconday school in the Midlands I am moving onto pastures new. Today was my last day and I am now looking forward to starting a role as an Level 3 Network engineer apprentice for a well known ISP. I am still in shock at getting the role, especially as it was filmed as part of the BBC3 'up for hire' program, which was on recently. I am not sure what is happening to my position, at my previous employer (having recently become an academy) but I will keep an eye on their website and post it here if it becomes available. Looking forward to a weeks induction, followed by the exciting prospect of fibre installation and working in comms rooms. I still going to remain on here as although I may no longer be an 'Edu' Geek, more an ISP Geek I have learnt many things during my previous employment and thanks to everyone who helped me. Thanks nN

Are you suggesting it is best to remove the Script from the startup GPO and add it to the RunOnce folder in the registry? What I cant get my head around it how to copy the updated RunOnce Directory to multipe machines, without using the Startup script option in the GPO, ie to avoid making the RunOnce folder being copied multiple times. Hope that makes sense nN

I hope they don't ditch the Procure kit as we have it throughout the school. All our hardware is 95% HP (DC7600 - DC8000 Elite), with a few Toshiba's and Compaq laptops. Apparently the PC sector has been declining for three years in a row, and software, and enterprise have been growing. http://www.businessinsider.com/hp-earnings-2011-8

I will give that a go I think. If I am thinking correctly, it is just a case of placing the reg key on a shared directory, creating a batch script to call the key and when adding it to GPO putting /s in the 'switches' box? Or does the /s have to go directly after the filename? \\server\SYSVOL\domain\scripts\Zeitgeist Client\newKey.reg /s

The file does exist. The difference in the files is that the newer one, which I am trying to copy over includes the path to the database, which is on the server If you do a manual install this would be done as part of the normal installation wizard, but that would mean an individual install, which I am trying to avoid. I have even looked at editing the MSI with ORA but cant see where to add a new column or even what to call it. I have also asked tech support and they could not help Thanks nN

I have written a batch script to copy a config file to multiple computers. REM Copies the FuseCore Config File to the installation folder to ensure that the client software can locate the database on the Server. XCOPY "\\server\SYSVOL\domain\scripts\Zeitgeist Client\FuseCore.config" "C:\Program Files\OxBox\Zeitgeist AQA GCE German - 31d6f5c4-196f-4a1c-9a18-47d80a262a4d\" /Y At the moment I have deployed it as a start up script with the GPO to which the software relates. The only problem I can see with this, is the script will run every time the computer starts, which is not ideal. Is there a way to ensure that the script only runs once or is it a case of a manual job? I am on server 2003 with XP clients. Thanks nN

Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
networkingNut replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
It is rolling out fine Thank you. After not having any luck with the adding the initial two URL's to the whitelist I checked the website history of a student account and it appears that there are several subdomains that it needs access to. As a result and deliberation I added *. Google.com the white list and touch wood all is now working correctly. Thanks everyone. Next Task to figure out how to copy a file to multiple machines VIA GPO but I will start a new thread for that so not to digress. nN -
Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
networkingNut replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks for that. Whenever I try and add it to group policy we get the error. "Unable to deploy the package, the package does not support a Windows Compatible Platform." In have changed the summary option to 1033, but apart from that I just placed it onto a network share and I got the above error Any ideas why. Its Server 2003 with XP pro clients I am trying to deploy with Thanks Update: After looking again at the Google Earth forums it appears to be related to the proxy settings. http://earth.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=ts.cs&ts=1210422 However, even after adding: •maps.google.com •auth.keyhole.com To our whitelist it still comes up with the same error. Did anyone have to input the proxy settings directly into the MSI, in order to resolve this? nN -
Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
networkingNut replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
If you could do that would be great. I honestry cant see where I am going wrong. 5.2 was easy to do In terms of Google 6 I have removed the languages except 1033 with ORCA and added an ALLUSERS row at the bottom of the property table I have then given it a value of One. Even though I am still getting all these errors. -
Google Earth install via GPO? Can it be done in v6?
networkingNut replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
I have done the edits to the MSI as above (using ORCA) but whenever I use it as a student I get an error "Cannot determine if you have permission to use this database". You can click on OK and it appears to work (Except streetview). The Man is showing in the top right for street view but whenever you howevr over streets the road are no highlighted blue, even roads on which I know there is streetview, I have also downloaded the upadted files from above and whenever I use those to roll it out I get an error saying "Could not contact the image server to download new images." Does anyone have any idea as to what is causing the problem? -
1. Which ver on Exch? Include SP level and rollup? exchnage information store version 6.5.7638.1 2. What OS is it sitting on? Server 2003 Standard edition Sp2 (Server) Xp Professional SP3 (my machine) 3. Have you given your self full mailbox access to the ex-students accounts? Yes 4. If yes, create a new dedicated account for exmerger, priveledge account will have deny access to mailboxes even if set, depending on how exch is configured. 5. Exch also cachespermission, for immediate effect, restart the IS service or be dismount/mount the store. Note there will be an outage for this I have unticked use cached mode in outlook 2010 After further reading on forums it appears that disconnecting the mailbox and then reconnecting it fixes the problem. However I dont really want to do this for all the mailboxes.

I am currently in the process of trying to backup all our students email boxes if they have just left. I have tried it using both the manual method (connect to individual mailboxes in Outlook 2010) and also the exmerge utility. Neither of them work Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Outlook 2010 The machine is XP Pro SP3. I have tried logging on as myself (an admin) and also as a last resort the built in administrator account. Neither of these work. Whenever I try and expand the newly added mailboxes outlook hangs and then says "These set of folders could not be opened, exchnage server is offline or down for maintainence". I have re-enabled the student account to ensure that this is not the problem. This did not resolve it Do I have to wait for exchange to sync before trying to access the mailbox of a recently enabled user? Exmerge This is my first attempt with exmerge. I have always avoided it in the past. I have tried this both as myself and administrator and also on my xp pro machine (with the exchange tools installed) and directly on the exchange server. They both come back with the same result. the exmerge log extract is below Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d) [11:56:35] Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox '********' ('******'). I have tried multiple mailboxes and they all come back with the same error. I have checked the permissions in systems manager and both the administrator and myself have full access to the database. Its becoming quote frustrating as I can't for the life of me understand why neither methods work. I am sure its something simple.

I may have come accross the problem. We have some software, which monitors keystrokes to ensure no inappropriate content is being searched for/used. It was implemented by SMT and is site wide (IT Admins included). I have contacted the macufacturers and they are currently investigating it. It is an impressive (Highly recommended) piece of software but like all software does have its moments, such as currently It made by a company called e-safe systems e-safe Systems Ltd Thanks nN
