MrPstv Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 How many ict technicians, network managers have a laptop supplied to them from the school? or do we have to spend our own hard earned dosh? reason i ask is that i have asked for a laptop in the past but i was told that i dont NEED it?

leco Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I don't have one, but there again why would I need one? I have a desktop that's mine, if I need a laptop I take one out of the pool I keep for staff. I don't do any work anywhere but at work so I don't see a need.
triggmiester Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I have my own laptop from work, lovely bit of kit Lenovo 3000 V100 - 2GB RAM, extra battery, bought my own case for it though. My boss is about to order one for him through work as well. Don't do much work at home, but it still goes with me, handy for taking round the site as well should the need arise.

I do use one sometimes to troubleshoot issues specific to laptop users - wifi connectivity, whiteboards and GPO restrictions, etc.

localzuk Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I have one (MacBook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz c2d), but I'd actually say that I only really need it when I'm doing development stuff (which I do mostly at home) or setting up switches in cabs initially. It's nice to have, but I could live without it I reckon - so long as there was one around I could borrow for short periods occasionally. I'll probably opt for a higher power desktop and a small and light laptop next time I get equipment replaced.

Very useful for all sorts of stuff from setting up in assembly for playing a DVD, troubleshooting wireless problems, going away to the staff room to work if I need to get away from the phone ringing, all sorts of uses. Sirbendy Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) I grabbed an ancient (1997) one that was being retired a few years back...still runs fine for basic bits and bobs (Inspiron P3). I've also been offered an HP dualcore. My "main" rig is currently a handbuilt (overclocked to the max) Sempron64 3000+..underpowered for some stuff now though. I'd be tempted to turn the HP into my "main" machine, give this Sempron to a teacher, and keep my Inspiron for home..I've just kitted it out with an IDE-CF converter and an 8gb CF card for the sake of robustness and portability. I've also got 2 Ergo Ensis P4/2ghz laptops sat on the desk..ex LFT jobs. Bit battered, but useable. I call them "hot swap" systems.. Edited October 13, 2008 by Sirbendy

cheesypete Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Was given an ancient RM laptop with a Celeron CPU which was ok for general day to day stuff (email / browsing) but it struggled with anything else Got so fed up I went down to Tescos and bought myself a nice dual core Acer for £379 - I use it as my main machine at home now so i can justify the cost
broc Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Dell Precision M90 Core2Duo with 17" display, dock & external monitor & keyboard. It is luggable rather than portable and doesn't leave my office very often. If I need something more mobile I can usually find a spare laptop.

Then we needed a model of that type to swap into a curriculum set so I got a brand new one Cant say Ive ever used it at school! Use it for home stuff, since my own laptop is rubbish. I also use a nice Macbook which is officially for the whole teams use but I pretty much just use it for me

Anyway, I couldn't possibly justify purchasing a laptop that would end up mostly being used at home for personal purposes by any staff member (especially me)
button_ripple Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I have got 1, but only because it has been "disposed" of in the view of the school . It is a 1.6 GHz Centrino with 480 MB of RAM. It has been "thrown" because it has a broken DVD drive (essential apparantly!), and a broken internal wireless card - the laptop was dropped at some point and the card had moved out of it's slot. If I asked for one I wouldn't get one! (see other post about no computer in FFS!)

I don't have a school laptop, but I don't need one - I have my own private office, with door, 22" screen desktop machine and not too much of an over-abundance of humming server-type equipment (just a couple of switches in a cabinet and the backup machine). -- David Hicks

My school has more money than it knows what to do with, and a laptop that just gets used at home is a sensible use of money compared with some of the things they spend it on...
iatkinson Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Sony VAIO VGN-S5XP running XP Hi-Grade RS400 running various linux distro's as required. Look after all staff and student laptops (approx 250) so never short if I require one for use or cannibialisation (dunno if that's a word).
