I have a 15" Dell XPS provided by the school, I got it mainly for use when I'm on our second site... without it I'd end up having to use the server most of the time

 

Its had its uses other than that, I have it setup with a copy of our sims database to test new patches etc, when a required update knocked out reporting on our main sims db I restored a backup to the laptop and got the secetarys to use it for the reports they needed to run.

 

Its also handy as a hot spare... if a PC fails or needs looking at I just leave the lappy in its place while I sort out the pc. Having it around when I'm working on the cabs is also useful.

 

I could do without it but it makes some things much easier.

i was given a brand new lenovo thinkpad laptop with a contract mobile phone with own voip phone and moved in a brand new office with 4 brand new ict rooms with everything new which are state-of-the art.. also i have a wonderfully ict support team and no problems with staff and slt, ''touch wood''

We have a pool of laptops we can use if needed - varied selection of old laptops that are no longer in use.

 

I've also just bought an eee pc (with school funds), which I have with me now, road testing while on holiday in the USA.

I've got a HP compaq nx7400, love it, I use it to do everything. It's handy to take home and do work from home on as I don't have a PC at home.

 

The head told me to get a good laptop when he started here and i came back at him with this thing, had it for 2 years and not had any problems with it, except that it came with vista on, now it's got XP on it's brilliant.

I haven't even got a PC of my own and have to work on the server in both schools. There is no money for even a desktop for me.

 

To be fair, the main usage I would get out of a laptop is for troubleshooting the whiteboards which are only attached to teacher's laptops, so if the laptop isn't available, I'm stuffed

 

I do have a laptop at home that I built from scrapped machines from both the schools I work in

I have a laptop in place of a desktop machine, it is a propper desktop replacment machine nad has no issues with speed or power so I am quite happy with it.

Pretty much like me, I have a tiny little dell d620, which I was concerned was gonna be underpowered - but has been excellent.

 

I'v e a dock at each site which it plugs into, and otherwise travels with me.

I've got one in one of my schools, it was going spare when a teacher left and had a history of crashing randomly, so I bagged it and use it for the school website, it's very useful for testing software on and is available for staff to use when they have a problem with theirs. I don't have a desktop pc (or a room come to that) in school so if the suite is in use it's useful to have.

I did have one but one of the schools stole it back.

 

TBH just sometimes easier to nick a teachers laptop to test IWB's and other various issues, they never mind! Easy bunch at my school.

We (myself and my network manager) have our desktop machines, and a laptop that replaced our 'spare' machine. The spare machine is often in use, and having it as a laptop means we have additional flexibility when it comes to moving around the school.

 

As to having a work laptop for home? Why? I can't imagine being in IT and not having my own machine at home... or actually, my own PC... laptop... server... VAX box... PDP-11...

I used my own for the first 6 months or so, although it was a spare that I had lurking about so I wasnt worried about it getting damaged etc.

I did keep making reminders I would need a school laptop at some point, when some new laptops were purchased for the school I had one of the older hand me downs. Low spec P4 but ideal for configing switches etc. Doesnt get used that much but when its needed its darn handy.

Don't see the need for one for me, I tend to bring my Macbook into school if I need a laptop which I am happy to do.

 

I did give one to the two technicians however if they to work from home, but I am not forcing them to do so.

We have a small pool of laptops which aren't currently in use as LfTs, which we use if we need one (presentations in the hall, going around taking serial numbers etc). Desktops seem fine and if I do anything from home I use my own machine.

I dont have a laptop for my own use from the school, we do have a HP unit milling around that we use for presentations and the like but it lacks things like serial ports that make switch fault finding that bit easier.

 

I do have a desktop at work though, and a decent desktop at home so apart from possibly having a proper VPN into the office I dont really see the need for a laptop of my own:)

I have an RM that was going in the skip. I get to keep it when I leave though.

 

At the rate I seem to destroy laptops, it's a good job it's not a good one really!

I have got 2 of my own - a 1.5Ghz Centrino and an iBook G4. Both decent enough machines for web browsing but they struggle when I try anything too intensive on them, hence why I use work's.

Never bought a new laptop (or desktop for that matter) of my own - always relied on secondhand or free stuff, mainly because I just cant afford it!

 

Aside from that Ive got a server for my music/videos - which is an old P4 in a nice case.

 

Did use to have loads of equipment - but moving out of a huge room at my parents into a flat put paid to all that
