Olliedawg Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 Our team are being asked to get more involved in manging the social media, uploading/creating posts etc - just wondering how many of you also undertake such tasks, alongside all the usual IT support...
NegativeKillDeath Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 Zero involvement here apart from technical questions. We have a communications member of staff who deals with that as well as designing print and digital media. For reference the school has 1650 students. 2
Rob_D Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 Aside from one time when we helped schedule posts to go out over the holidays, and helping with passwords every now and then, no. We steer well clear of that one. Teachers are the ones that know what cool stuff the school is doing so they're the best placed to post about it. 2
ICT-Joe Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 We don't have nay involvement here - the closest we get to this is when we have to update the Digital Signage, but we're trying to move that from our department now. 1
3s-gtech Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 Much more involved than I’d like, as those that wanted to be able to put posts on there became too busy to do so. I think people see our social media presence as underwhelming as a result, but I just put stuff on there that I’m given - I do not try creating reels, nor waste time with engagement stuff. 1
itskdog Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 No social media accounts at all for our school. Everything for parents to know goes on the school website or ParentMail, and the website is managed by SLT now, with support from IT, rather than us doing everything. 2
Popular Post MatthewL Posted September 19, 2025 Popular Post Posted September 19, 2025 Social Media isn't an IT issues its a comms/marketing issue. 6

mrbios Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 Our careers lady is also our social media lady, she deals with the school twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, advertisements in local papers or banners advertising school events. 1
Rob_D Posted September 19, 2025 Posted September 19, 2025 TBF, the social media stuff would probably have come our way if we hadn't got a company in to redo the school's website and social media into an integrated whole. All the stuff really drives the "social media as a whole school responsibility" policy, which has worked great for us.

Personally my view, Should in no way be a role of IT support, end of. Even a previous school managed web content between the teaching staff, all we had to do was made sure they had access. It goes back to the line of "well it involves using a computer" and demeaning to our technical role and abilities. Edited September 20, 2025 by Davit2005 1
thimon Posted September 20, 2025 Posted September 20, 2025 Definitely a job for the Marketing / Comms department. 2
kennysarmy Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 No involvement - remit stops after allowing Social Media access for certain members of staff. #HowItShouldBe 1
DrCheese Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 We set up Social Media over a decade ago & still run it internally. But then digital media & marketing is part of my department (& have the staff to do it) so I don't see it as a problem, more a feather in our cap. IT definately, 100% need to be involved with social media at some level. There's just too much risk to the organisation if it's left to non IT savvy people.
psydii Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 As with anything that is tangentially related to I C or T, we tend to be the backstop/continuity provider if things have gone wrong. We hold copies of the keys to the accounts, and have our own documentation of processes for how to actually post or update pages. I've been asked to make two posts in the last year vs the many dozen that the comms officer has. When they were off for a long period a few years ago, we did a lot more of the posting, but big changes to content were put on hold. The bulk of their work though is internal facing and more akin to the technical/design work that used to sit in a traditional media services / reprographic team (from way back in the day). None of that comes anywhere near us.
6Foot2 Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 We were not involved at all. The website was externally managed by a contracted agency, with content fed to them from our Business Manager. Other social media outlets Twitter/Facebook etc. were devolved to other chosen members of staff. However, another school in the trust did everything in-house by the IT staff, which is how it's done now for all schools in the trust, I believe.
DrCheese Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 ^ Yes, the backstop above is key as to why IT should be involved. There's a lot of backend stuff to setup that's quite IT focused (Verification/management) & there's a lot of quirks around posting content that also need someone quite IT savvy, so for us it's always made sense to have it the way we do. I've seen too many social media pages slapped up by organisations then linked to a single person. As Facebook/Meta require personal accounts to be linked this is a massive risk. I know of places that have lost said member of staff for whatever reason & then had to fight to reclaim their pages, or just straight up lost them. Places that don't have 2fa setup at all on those accounts and so on.
Gongalong Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 I'm fully involved, but that's because of role creep. I don't mind though as I enjoy it. If you don't, and feel it's beyond your role, you need to speak to your line manager etc.
FragglePete Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 We have overall control of the accounts, but do very little in the way of content. Other staff members do all that. Will do the occasional update on request though. Pete 1
