Got a delivery from Tesco this morning (booked weeks ago) and it’s pretty much complete. Three substitutions, all sensible, and only potatoes missing. Such a relief. We are quarantined and the supplies were running very low indeed.

 

There's no flour to be had round here. I've also not been able to get any dried pulses apart from red lentils. Virtually no rice other than arborio - I feel a risotto happening soon...

Both greengrocer and butcher were well stocked even if the prices were up a bit. Completely impossible to book any deliveries or click and collect. I have one click and collect in a couple of weeks time, and that's it.

Same here but with Ocado. I'm so glad that I booked a regular weekly delivery slot a week or two before COVID-19 took off exponentially, as it means I can just lump my Mum's stuff and my partner's parents' stuff in together with ours and then distribute it.

 

For those looking for flour and rice, check local small shops like Budgens, Spar, etc.

We're an independent school, so our funding is basically based on sales! Announced yesterday that fees for next term will be reduced by a significant amount so we need to save money somehow. We had been told at the end of term gathering before the school closed, that wages were guaranteed until May, but obviously things have changed.

 

The plan is for these staff (including teachers, TAs and admin staff) to auto-forward their emails to the main "school office" account. However, there are several key flaws in this plan:

 

First, the email address sent out in the instructions to those furloughed was wrong.

Second, this email account will now get hammered with 30 or so forwarded versions of the same email for every "all staff" message.

Third, the school secretaries (who normally monitor this account) are on the furlough list so who is checking the emails?!

 

Also, the message sent out didn't use BCC (the email was forwarded to me by one of the staff when the "school office" auto forwarding bounced back) so all those on the list got to see staff emails - including quite a lot of personal email accounts.

 

Fortunately, other than dealing with the immediate issues around the email forwarding, this is SEP and I'm "on holiday" from Friday for two weeks, so I'm sure it'll be a quiet time off...

A label has been added to the forwarded email so the line manager knows it's come from a furloughed member of staffs email.

And not one but two versions of Spider-Man have been spreading joy around the streets of Stockport.

 

Using their hour of exercise a day, pals Andrew Baldock and Jason Baird have been using their time in the best possible way.

 

Working separately, they have been visiting streets around Stockport to wave to children who are stuck indoors because of the coronavirus pandemic...

That sounds more logical than forwarding all emails to one address, and then realising there isn't anyone checking it! At least they've sorted out the "who is checking it" part - and it's not me (thankfully) so others - including the person who thought it was a good idea to use one account - can deal with the deluge.

I watch a lot of American dumpster divers and thrifters and I have been startled to see that they dont really have the same rules in place as we do. The ones in NJ were out today, and in Pennsylvania one person has her daughter come over to do YouTube videos with her. And another guy actually commented on how few people were out and about! He's a trash picker - they put out lots of household goods and furniture - and I think if he was here that wouldnt be allowed

Went out to do the Clapping to the NHS thing this evening

 

Last week wqe were the only ones in sight (could here loads of others) until the people opposite cam e out a bit late

 

Today the number doubled (as far as I could see)

 

Most British thing ever - people would love to do it but too embarrassed unless other people do it as well!!

 

 

maybe more will come next week

 

 

 

as we went in the people opposite yelled "see you next week!!"

I mean I see the point, but it just screams of slacktivism to me.

 

I'd rather we pay them a decent salary and stop gouging the NHS of its resources. But writing to your local MP is too much effort :doh:

I think COVID-19 has shown us how woefully underprepared for this we were, and I'll definitely be writing myself.

 

Maybe I'm just an old git. I just see people posting to facebook and patting themselves on the back and I can't help but feel they've they're congratulating themselves for achieving nothing.

Been meaning to do this for a while, but @Garacesh post above spurred me on. My message to my MP:

 

 

For the last two weeks I have been taking part in the "Clap for NHS" on Thursday evenings. This has been a great way to show support for those on the front line dealing with COVID-19. As I work as a member of support staff in school I also appreciate the extra work of teachers and other key workers having to go above and beyond during this difficult time.

 

I am sure that NHS staff appreciate these efforts. However I'm sure they would also like an acknowledgement of their immense hard work in terms of an increase in funding and pay. I see that in June 2017 you voted against the removal of the public sector pay cap, which would have meant a fair pay rise for these workers, who are struggling with a lack of equipment and cannot currently be tested to find out if they have the virus.

 

Will you raise the issue of NHS and other public sector pay in Parliament? These staff deserve considerably better wages - and derserved this even before the outbreak has massively increased their workload.

You make a fair point, but don't underestimate how big national gestures like this help to cheer up those working on front lines in hospitals etc.

They work silly hours and for not nearly as much pay as they deserve. Seeing that the whole nation appreciates your work will give some the strength to keep on working even as things look more bleak.

 

You're not wrong about salaries and resources, but those aren't things that can be fixed immediately (they should definitely be fixed though).

Whereas going out to cheer, clap, bang pots and pans etc has an instant effect on the mood of those being cheered for AND the rest of the nation vicariously.

We all need a little extra warmth an inspiration right now :)

With 'Clap for Carers' and public support of teachers, posties and shelf-stackers being all the rage, at the moment, don't forget that we need these real key workers all the time.

 

From the fractured genius mind of Gideon Conn comes this tribute another unsung (ok, in this case - sung) hero, from long before Covid-19 and lockdown was a thing.

 

 

If you ever get a chance to see him live, please do. His recordings do not do him justice compared to his live performances. I defy anyone to go to a Gideon gig and leave without a feeling a warm, fuzzy glow and a love for all of humanity.

Stupidity and fear have always been a dangerous mix.

 

This is why some of the attacks on the government lying seem to miss the point a bit. Of course the government are lying - if they told us exactly what was happening, a LOT of people would be a lot more scared than they are. To use Pratchett's term "lies-to-children".

 

We know what the population of the country can be like when they panic. Hell, we had people calling 999 because KFC ran out of chicken. Managing people's fears is as big of a task for the government as managing the virus itself.

Our childminder is driving my GF crazy with similar bat:censored: conspiracy theories about COVID19 and 5G.

 

It really takes a special kind of ignorance to conflate the two

 

My response to that would be - so why are countries with little/no 5G being hit hardest? Italy, Spain, etc have virtually no 5G outside of their capitals and yet... COVID-19 everywhere.

 

Of course, it's hard to reason people out of a position they weren't reasoned into...
