What is the "plants" input from? -
Schoolsbroadband down (anyone else?)

I was still getting them for a year after we left. -
100% agree. In education, availability of services is paramount, and so even when you do roll out Microsoft (or anybody else’s) updates, they should be tested on devices that “get worked”, but will cause minimal disruption if they break things, which they will from time to time. When they are proved solid in your establishment, only then should they be rolled out site wide. It’s nothing new, having been the approved method for at least the last 40 years when it was IBM rather than Microsoft.

Everyone else will have to suck up being taught by by AI agent powered edtech/data broker platforms.

Outside of Education, I have found Rethink DNS https://rethinkdns.com/ "interesting" on my Chinese Android phones.

It is also worth disguising/hiding any oil tanks that would otherwise be very visible to drive-by opportunists.

Schoolsbroadband - SSL Inspection
sigma replied to andy_b's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
What you are seeing is the normal SBB setup. They did selective SSL inspection for us and tended to make tutting noises if I started asking about full SSL inspection. When we moved to LGFL and full inspection, it worked very well. Netsweeper is very capable of working out what should be allowed or denied based on category rules on different pages of a domain provided full decryption is implemented. For SBB gbnews.com, aliexpress.com, aljazeera.com, will be in category allows, only filtered at the domain level and not url inspected. That effectivly means that cannot report on urls accessed for those domains. 888.com will be category Gambling and blocked. SBB should be able to provide you copies of all the lists (particularly allows) they apply on your behalf. The selective SSL list was mainly porn and CSAM - fortunately, most domains no longer exist, but the site names were not ambiguous. I was never given a satisfactory answer as to why "they" were inspected and not just blocked. For our last year with them, I dumped all the SBB provided lists and rolled our own including adding sites we wanted decrypting so we could variously allow some pages and deny others. We found SBB had a nasty habit of dropping either "wholeword" or "keyword" allows into their lists which effectively allowed anyone to bypass filtering for any search term combined with these. You might find it useful to run your own reports rather than relying on what you are provide with. -
Item in The Guardian suggests the rest of the UK won't get grants for heat pumps for much longer either.

This is a new feature. Controls are distinct from Classic Siri and Apple Intelligence: https://www.macworld.com/article/2986799/ios-27-features-compatiblity-siri-ai-updates.html

Probably not what you want to hear: https://www.theedadvocate.org/the-ai-detection-debacle-why-uk-universities-are-ditching-flawed-tools/ My niece had problems with some school work she handed in and was falsely accused of having produced it using AI.

Have you properly risked assessed IpadOS 27 regarding use of pupil data as LLM training data or ensured that everyone opts/is oped out? https://forums.appleinsider.com/discussion/245656/if-you-let-it-apple-intelligence-will-train-itself-on-your-data-in-ios-27

Those of us old enough to have been working in tech in the last century can probably recall when it paid, plus bonuses and perks very very well. (I'm older that 6foot2).

Are proxy-based appliances an old-school approach? "It depends" on your precise requirements. Do filtering agents have significant overhead on user devices? Not in the grand scheme of things. Overall device performance and network/internet speed are far more significant. Can filtering agents be bypassed easily if a user has local administrator rights on the device? " It depends", but generally yes. Why would anyone have or need Local Admin Rights? If using a DNS-only solution for Bring Your Own Device, is there any good mitigation to prevent filtering bypass? Restricting port 53 helps, but DNS over HTTPS (DoH) adoption is climbing. A DNS only solution can never be KCSIE or Filtering and Monitoring Standards compliant. DNS over HTTPS should in any case be blocked in school. Are you planning filtering "school devices" on site or everywhere? Its always worth asking for product trials and to ask suppliers for references to schools that have a close a setup and requirement to your own if they can, and to check they really can do what the marketing says they can.
