Does anyone still use WSUS

Hi

 

Just wondering if anyone still uses WSUS? We do updates manually each half term as WSUS is slow on our ageing servers.

 

Was just thinking when we get a new server, whether to use WSUS? We are licensed for Systemcenter too.

 

Or do people use patch management on a 3rd party product.

We do, as we haven't implemented SCCM.

dosent sccm just install wsus anyway and basically coopt it to be part of the sccm interface rather than its own entity?

sccm also does all sorts of other stuff. It manages virtual machines allows you to deploy software with reporting and not just straight msi's and I believe not just at startup but when ever you want. You can rebuild pcs without leaving the desk just wol them add a task and they will boot install windows and all their software. Its a massive tool for doing all sorts of jobs and probably overkill for a primary

Our WSUS system is running on an old physical server, SCCM is all on new VM's. That's the main reason for wanting to switch at the moment. The setup has been done by an external company so I'm not 100% on how it all works as yet.

This is also true, WSUS is free. There's no reason not to use WSUS if you don't have SCCM setup. Its easy to do and I've used it for years!

As far as I'm aware SCCM is included with the Windows Desktop Education licence bundle we have. I only really use it for software deployment at the moment, still preferring to use WDS and WSUS seperately until I can really get my head around it.

Do you mean the WSUS server itself is slow or the delivery/checking for patches on the clients is slow? Have you given the WSUS database/WSUS itself any TLC recently?

Its the server itself, they are all slow - writing the replacement spec as we speak.

Well that's one of the many things it does. It's peanuts to licence under OVS-ES and I wouldnt be without it.

Not using SCCM, but using WSUS. Had to reinstall the service at the Primary yesterday as it constantly required me to restart the node and fail over again.

Yes, you have to by a System Center license to use it but Microsoft practically give them away to education, especially if you don't manage servers with it and stick to the standard version.
