Backups - Who and How?

Wanting to review the whole backup solution and keen to know what others use....

 

Both for physical and virtual.

 

To tape, disk? SAN/NAS? Cloud?

 

Which providers?

 

Seem's to me many many providers / solutions to want to make sure go with the right one.

Use BackUp Exec here - primarily its what I cut my teeth on and I'm just used to it. We back up to disk and this is duplicated to LTO-5 tape (via an Autoloader) and these are stored in a safe in another building from the main school. Call me old fashioned, but I like offline backups that tape provides. We have a mixture of Physical and Hyper-V machines with various VMs and it copes with all quite nicely. As I move more things over to Hyper-V in the future I may review things and I know a lot of peeps here will sing about Veeam and I may look at this in the future. I'm also pondering using some NAS devices and replicate to these in the future, but, I just still like my Tapes. Am also considering cloud based backup for things like SIMS in the future also.

 

And yes, I do regular restores from disk and from the tapes to ensure all is working correctly!

Use Microsoft DPM with 2 servers onsite in complete different locations on site. Also looking at the Azure storage now it has dropped in price as the offsite solution as it just integrates with it

Absolute god-send on a daily basis. Fantastic when we had our SAN lock up and we had SQL and Exchange Databases to restore. So easy. So fast.

We're using DPM here to a QNAP NAS and HP Server in remote cabinet with Firestreamer used as a VTL to take a full copy offsite weekly.

Just buy Veeam.... virtualise anything physical and use that and nothing else. Your stress levels will thank you.

The only thing is cost on that one. It's not the easiest to break down. But it's something like £16 per TB per month isn't it?

I've signed up for a moth free trial so I can get a rough idea of the true cost - did a small test and 13GB worked out at 11p (10p for storage and 1p for block transfer)

 

My intention is to use Azure to hold monthly backups so looking at 2-3TB

 

Have backups happening this weekend to determine if the costs etc

Backup Exec for physical and virtual servers to a NAS. NAS replicates to second nasty in different building. Once a month plug in a encrypted drive via USB to NAS and that then gets stored off-site

Veeam backs up servers to NAS in a second building which replicates to a second NAS in a third building. So D2D2D. If we lost three buildings to a disaster then we would have bigger things to worry about :s

Veam I swear by it - it's just SO darn good. It's so good, it's worth virtualising all you're servers immediately just so you can use Veeam on them.

55 schools backed up via WAN to a SAN using Backup Assist and another 10 using Backup Exec to tape.

Backup assist is a nice product for single server backup.

I was wondering if any one can answer a few questions regarding Veeam

Is the 2 Socket bundle for the Server you install it on? or including all servers that backup to it?

I have a Physical server that I going to virtualize, its rather old but might do the job.

Could anyone give an example of their setup?
