  1. Ya, this is something I have been doing. The main issue is if a laptop needs a restart and then needs logging back into, the exam software automatically loads. I have to fill out the candidate info to then open their work. Not a major issue, just an inconvenience. We also have it set so it prompts the user to save after they fill in their details. This means I need to save a file which isn't going to be used.
  2. +1. Sometimes we have to re-open an exam file but are forced to enter Candidate Details before we can do anything. We like asking for candidate details before the exam begins but understand it can be turned off.
  3. This caught me out a couple weeks ago. A student lost some work so I looked through previous versions and the latest one I found was missing a whole paragraph. As the exam was going on in the room I didn't want to hang about and said this seems to be the latest version. The student got very upset and had to leave the room. I decided to sit down and look a bit harder and realised that the last number was a 9 and having worked in IT for a few years, I realised that sometimes (in excel and other programs) lists can be out of place due to the way a computer reads 10 as 1 and 0. I know for next time but would be good to have it in order for anyone else that comes across this.
  4. Probably not much help but we're a 1:1 iPad school based in the East if you don't mind travelling! We have quite a few people visit us about iPads.
  5. We're seeing all formatting reset after sending a document to print. We currently have double lined spacing setup by default but once you send a job to print, it reverts back to single and removes all bolded formatting.
  6. We made it so USB sticks have to be encrypted to write to them. They can be used as read only still without being encrypted. One issue we came across was devices such as Microbits or MBEDS that act as a USB storage device but are actually used for programming got blocked. Does anyone have a work around for these kid of devices?
  7. Yea, got the same issue the other day in an exam. Wanted to use a version I know has been working really well so haven't updated in a while. I'll update ExamWritePad for mocks next year. Just want to get the main exams out of the way. It's been working really well. We have a lot of Word Processing students.
  8. I probably used the wrong wording for this. It's not that SIMs are dropping support for direct SQL access. It's our hosting provider that doesn't want 3rd party providers using it for security reasons which is understandable. I don't think SIMS has ever supported it as they would rather people use the available APIs. I emailed round our suppliers and found Schoolpost are using direct SQL. They are already in the works for setting up Wonde which we'll move over too once it's ready.
  9. Might help might not: Safari and Internet Explorer are the only supported browsers. I have to use internet explorer for it to work for me.
  10. I think only 1 american MIS can connect to ASM (powerschoool?). We've got salamander to create csv's for us. Works really well.
  11. It's our Hosting provider that has agreed with Capita that this method should not be allowed: https://faq.scomis.org/kb21287/ Will have to contact our 3rd party vendors to find out how they're extracting the data.
  12. I just had a phone call from our Hosted SIMS supplier (Scomis) and have said that Capita have announced they will no longer allow Data Extraction from SIMS using Direct SQL. Does anyone know which products might use Direct SQL to get the data? We have a few 3rd party products that run on servers but not sure what it might use Direct SQL. Examples: Wisepay, schoolpost, salamander.
  13. Ya, that's what we're doing at the moment.
  14. We've been using it since last year and it's been great. I suggest going to the new thread and getting the updated versions. I will say that we use to get the occasional crash when running it from a network share. Since we swapped to running a login script to copy the software locally it's been much more stable. No Crashes. I think this may be a Windows 10 thing as we have another piece of Finance Software that runs from a shared drive that has only started crashing for users on Windows 10.
  15. The new GPO updates have been released and there is a new one: 1803 - windowsstore.admx - Disable all apps from Microsoft Store Disable turns off the launch of all apps from the Microsoft Store that came pre-installed or were downloaded. Apps will not be updated. Your Store will also be disabled. Enable turns all of it back on. This setting applies only to Enterprise and Education editions of Windows. Does this mean we don't need to uninstall provisioned apps? New GPO reference sheet can be found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56946 Edit: I guess some apps are needed such as photo viewer. Would be good if we could choose which ones are disabled.
  16. I've got this script I found online from when 1709 was released. It seems to work for 1803 still. Create a folder with the windows 10 ISO in and with this script inside it. It extracts the WIM from the ISO download, then mounts the WIM to remove the packages. There is a whitelist area to add packages you dont' want to remove if you want to change any. I've kept xbox ones in as they can stop the the photos app working and also the screen recording can be useful. It also makes some tweeks to the NTUSER.dat registry. Once the WIM has been modified I upload it to MDT. https://paste.ofcode.org/dTbcDZQxJsMD5gySqX4zS3 Any idea when I use the code tags it puts all my code on one line on these forums?
  17. Yep, we just paid £3096 for a new unit to be put in one of our schools.
  18. Yep, apple lock down the system too much so only so much can be done on an iPad.
  19. You can't really monitor iPads unless you force them to use a specific browser alongside a piece of Software. I believe Policy Central (now called Future Digital?) are introducing monitoring for iPads but you have to use their browser. This will only monitor what they do in the browser. The only other option is to use Apple Classroom and watch their iPads as they use them which isn't a good use of time.
  20. Anyone have link/guide to a script that extracts the wim and removes specific built in apps? Got an old one but wondering if anyones found one for 1803. Guess it's still a bit early.
  21. Been good for me so far. We're using an older version as most of the new stuff that's been added isn't needed for us. We where getting a few crashes during the mocks but I've changed it so the software is copied to the laptops locally at login rather than running it from a network share. No crashes yet.
  22. Our screen lock is 10 mins for all machines except for classroom machines. This was set to 20 minutes. We have replaced our projectors with TVs which don't seem to have a freeze option! We've put in 2 factor for staff. We've just enabled a bit locker policy to force USB encryption but still had backlash. All staff have google accounts and should be using google drive but there are quite a few people living their lives from a USB stick still. Plus, microbits and MBEDS act as USB storage devices which stops them working so we had to remove the bitlocker policy from certain machines. We've now got the go ahead to enable 2 Factor for our students. This will be fun! They've all got iPads so can use an app as their 2 Factor step.
  23. Yep, similar experience. It's a bit like health and safety training that everyone jokes about but it's there for a reason. People just don't take things seriously until it happens to them.
  24. A similar thread was posted a while back that sounds like a similar thing. This is the fix: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/190222-windows-10-1709-nps-wireless-policy-issues-2.html
  25. Yep, it's one I found on the internet and tweeked. It's a bit old now so might be an updated version somewhere. There's a few things that you will need to change such as the body of the email and the variables. There is a testing variable to test it which is handy. ################################################################################################################## # Version 1.4 February 2016# Robert Pearman (WSSMB MVP)# TitleRequired.com# Script to Automated Email Reminders when Users Passwords due to Expire.## Requires: Windows PowerShell Module for Active Directory## For assistance and ideas, visit the TechNet Gallery Q&A Page. http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Password-Expiry-Email-177c3e27/view/Discussions#content# Or Checkout my Youtube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/robtitlerequired#################################################################################################################### Please Configure the following variables....$smtpServer="smtp-relay.gmail.com"$expireindays = 20$from = "IT Department "$logging = "Disabled" # Set to Disabled to Disable Logging$logFile = "c:\scripts\mylog.csv" # ie. c:\mylog.csv$testing = "Disabled" # Set to Disabled to Email Users$testRecipient = "[email protected]"$link = "https://linktowebsite.com"$logo = "https://linktologo.png"##################################################################################################################### Check Logging Settingsif (($logging) -eq "Enabled"){ # Test Log File Path $logfilePath = (Test-Path $logFile) if (($logFilePath) -ne "True") { # Create CSV File and Headers New-Item $logfile -ItemType File Add-Content $logfile "Date,Name,EmailAddress,DaystoExpire,ExpiresOn,Notified" }} # End Logging Check# System Settings$textEncoding = [system.Text.Encoding]::UTF8$date = Get-Date -format ddMMyyyy# End System Settings# Get Users From AD who are Enabled, Passwords Expire and are Not Currently ExpiredImport-Module ActiveDirectory$users = get-aduser -SearchBase "CHANGE THIS TO YOUR OU OF USERS YOU WANT TO SET THIS AGAINST" -filter * -properties Name, PasswordNeverExpires, PasswordExpired, PasswordLastSet, EmailAddress |where {$_.Enabled -eq "True"} | where { $_.PasswordNeverExpires -eq $false } | where { $_.passwordexpired -eq $false }$DefaultmaxPasswordAge = (Get-ADDefaultDomainPasswordPolicy).MaxPasswordAge# Process Each User for Password Expiryforeach ($user in $users){ $Name = $user.Name $emailaddress = $user.emailaddress $passwordSetDate = $user.PasswordLastSet $PasswordPol = (Get-AduserResultantPasswordPolicy $user) $sent = "" # Reset Sent Flag # Check for Fine Grained Password if (($PasswordPol) -ne $null) { $maxPasswordAge = ($PasswordPol).MaxPasswordAge } else { # No FGP set to Domain Default $maxPasswordAge = $DefaultmaxPasswordAge } $expireson = $passwordsetdate + $maxPasswordAge $today = (get-date) $daystoexpire = (New-TimeSpan -Start $today -End $Expireson).Days # Set Greeting based on Number of Days to Expiry. # Check Number of Days to Expiry $messageDays = $daystoexpire if (($messageDays) -gt "1") { $messageDays = "in " + "$daystoexpire" + " days." } else { $messageDays = "today." } # Email Subject Set Here $subject="Your password will expire $messageDays" # Email Body Set Here, Note You can use HTML, including Images. $body =" Dear $name, Your Computer login Password will expire $messageDays Edit this text to say what you want Remove lines if you need To change your password on a PC press CTRL+ALT+Delete and choose Change Password To change your password on your iPad (only works inside the school network), please click this link, or visit the Password WebLink icon on your iPad - this will only work whilst on the school wifi.
