Okay, that's a little bit better, but it still makes a right hash of the formatting if you try to use the browser to live edit the files. I've just tried one now and the images in the document were all over the place. As for the Google Drive Add-in, this is only feasible if you are using Microsoft Office, not an option for live editing or for Chromebooks.

I know this question might have been asked 100s of times, before, but I'm at a crossroads with my implementations and what direction to go in. I've always been a Microsoft guy and thought the transition to Office 365 made the most sense because it involved Microsoft Office, which is what most of our users have grown up with. However, I've been looking in to Google Apps recently and I was quite surprised as to how many schools locally have actually taken it up. I'm also very impressed with Chromebooks and the thought process behind them and that management seems to be a lot easier than with full fat Windows laptops/tablets. Also, the times I have had to call Google support vs Microsoft support, the experience with Google has been so much better than with Microsoft. Now, here is my main hurdle... Google Docs/Slides and Sheets. I'm sure we all have the same wonderful issue of staff filling up their home folders and shared areas. Google Drive seems to have a wonderfully immediate solution to this which is unlimited space. Problem solved right? Well... not really! The space problem is solved, definitely. But the issue then comes with when the staff go to edit their files. Obviously, these will historically be Microsoft Word. Excel and PowerPoint files. So, you go to edit a file, it converts is to a Docs/Slides/Sheets file, creates a duplicate and then makes a right mess of the formatting of the document. Then there is the issue of features. Google Docs can't even create a full page border in a document as I found with a random Word document I tried to edit with Google Docs, and no doubt there will be tons of other features that are missing! So, I'm left with several questions... How have your staff managed the transition and learning curve to Google Apps considering most have come from a Microsoft background. Is it worth the time and training consideration moving to Google, or should we stick with what we know? Is Google winning the war in Education, as I have been very surprised by just how many schools have embraced it in comparison to Office 365. Or is Office 365 the way forward?

Thanks for the suggestions. Chrome Remote Desktop probably does the best job for me and works great from an iOS device too! The paid options may be good, but as it's just for remote access to my own PC, it's not something that I can justify an expense for. Thanks for that, I did that last night and they agreed to convert my license to free personal use

I have been using TeamViewer for years at home and despite always ensuring I have selected for personal use, it has told me it has detected commercial use! (Even though it's my personal PC at home!) I've tried loads of things suggested on several websites, registry cleaning, changing MAC address, nothing works. Looks like I'm gonna have to look elsewhere! Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives that will allow me to remote access a Windows PC and MacBook Pro from both Windows 10 and macOS and also from an iOS device.

+1 for Meraki here too. Luckily I only currently have 31 iPads to manage via Meraki, albeit we do have lots of legacy iPads that aren't managed at all. On the whole though, Meraki has been good albeit a steep learning curve as mentioned above.

The main thing we want to do is have a shared storage area, with a view to completely moving our shared areas on site in to the cloud. Can this be done with Google Apps? I know that each user gets a Google Drive (with 30GB space? Or is it unlimited?) Would I have to create a "[email protected]" account and get everyone to put their shared data in that?

My school has recently become a MAT and we have taken over a local school that was in special measures. We are looking at several different platforms for gradually moving our data from on site servers on to the cloud as part of our full network IT refreshes. As yet, the new trust doesn't have a website, but we do have a domain name and I have switched over all of our users on to the new MAT alias. For setting up Google Apps, would I set up each school individually, or would I set it up as 1 single MAT institution? We do still have the old .sch.uk domains in place and these will remain (for sign up verification), but I just wanted to know how other MATs have approached the setup.

The charity organisation I volunteer at have asked me to create an achievement certificate to hand out for special achievements or occasions, including an official marriage certificate for marriage ceremonies we perform. I created a template in Word, but I would love to be able to have a document that automatically prompts the user for inputs and populate the data in the certificate from there. I would also like it to automatically generate a document number so that each certificate is unique. Is there anyway I can achieve this? I have tried content control boxes and {FILLIN} commands, but I can't seem to get this working the way I want it to. Also, I have no idea how to generate the incremental certificate number. Any ideas? Am I doing this totally wrong? Would there be a better way to go about it?

You'll probably need to go to appleid.apple.com and update your security settings. Add the security questions they are asking for and you will also need to add 2 factor authentication as that is a requirement for any Apple ID using DEP. Once you've done that, it should allow you to progress further. Apple will also need to authorise the DEP account by calling the Headteacher to verify the school. That's what they did here anyway!

As far as I can see, this is just a wrapper for the WhatsApp Web app. What we need is a truly independent app that doesn't need the phone to be connected.

Wasn't quite sure where to fit this in, so figured I'd go for General Chat. We have recently become a MAT and taken on a local school who was in special measures. I've been tasked with looking at the infrastructure at both sites and putting something new in place. We'll be doing away with our current network environment (both schools are relatively identical) which is made up of 2 servers on 2 separate domains. A curriculum domain with a server running CC4 with Windows 7 clients and an admin domain with a server on a very badly configured vanilla Windows 2008 R2 with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 clients. The plan is to completely do away with everything and go with a 1 domain on a vanilla Windows Server backend with Windows 10 clients. Both sites are primary and we aren't currently using anything our of the ordinary. The main applications in use appear to be: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) ActivInspire (This is used quite heavily) Target Tracker SIMS The children use a range of simple curriculum software applications and nothing that seems to be heavy on resources. Both sites have an LGfL connection with LGfL VoIP and LGfL WiFi on separate VLANs. We will continue to use these services along with the LGfL StaffMail for email provision. EDIT: Forgot to mention, we also use LGfL GridStore for offsite backup and Sophos Anti-Virus, again, which will will continue to do so. My question is, what kind of server/network infrastructure should I go for? I would like to have a scenario of least possible points of failure at both sites. We would have a MAT domain forest, with the 2 schools as trusted domains under the forest connected via the LGfL connection. Currently the options are: Physical Server on Hyper-V with 2 VMs VM1: DC, DHCP, DNS, Home Folders, Shared Areas WDS, SCCM VM2: SIMS, SQL Possible replicated DC held in the cloud either by Azure or on LGfL servers for extra redundancy. The main issue we have at school is space. Our shared areas are constantly being filled up with resources and video evidence files for SEN pupils as we are a SEN specialism school with the latter taking up the majority of space. Is there an option that would allow me to redirect all shared areas (maybe even home areas) to the cloud? Maybe Office 365/OneDrive? Would this option leave us severely hampered in the event of internet connection loss? What option should I look at for application deployment? I've used SCCM in the past and was rather pleased with it, but I was told to look at App-V. Would this be better? To me, the sound of streaming applications to the desktop just sounds like a recipe for bandwidth issues. I've heard of some local schools looking at going down the Google for Education route, however, I'm not sure to what extent. I don't think our users are quite ready for the massive change and I still see it as just a compliment to the Windows Server backend as opposed to a complete replacement as how would you run desktop applications like SIMS, Photoshop, App Inventor, Audacity and other bespoke computing curriculum desktop applications? Am I looking at the possible solutions completely wrong? Would there be a better possible method of solution to look at?

I've got a borrowed 970 in my system at the moment, so I will definitely be looking at the 1070 as a suitable purchase when it comes out. Still, amazing to see how much better the cards are than the Titan X.

I don't understand why the system requirements are so damn high. The Xbox is no where near as powerful as the ideal requirements needed. You need a super computer well over £1000 to be able to play this game!

Moving to Smoothwall from Bloxx was the best move I ever made for our web filtering. I especially didn't like the 6 months notice to cancel contract! That was utterly ridiculous!

A colleague of mine has been offered a Lenovo ThinkCenter M700 Small Form Factor PC as the main device for her school's IT refresh. However, the devices only come with the standard Intel 4600 GPU. Can anyone recommend a reasonably suitable GPU that will fit the small form factor case that will perform better than the built in Intel 4600. The main usage for the PCs will be to run the Adobe Creative Suite of apps (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, Premier Pro, Fireworks, Illustrator), the Serif Suite, Kodu, Blender etc.

The only trouble with this, is when using shared/student iPads, they always forget to log out as they are never prompted or reminded to do, so you could end up accidentally saving work in someone else's account.

I had the KAB Controller Chair at my last place. It was a fantastic chair. I really would love to have one for home and my current work place, but unfortunately the near £800 price tag just isn't feasible on a personal level and I only managed to get it at my last work place because that was where I hurt my back

A slight tangent to the main topic, is it possible to remove all of the CC4 software, agents and services from 1 particular PC? Is there a removal tool? I'd like to reuse a PC on a non-CC4 domain without having to rebuild it as we have some obscure software on there which we would have to pay extra cash for the support company to remote in and reinstall. If it's possible, this would be good, if not, we'll just have to shell out the cash.

Check out this thread that I posted a while back asking the same question. Cut the long story short, despite having worked for RM in the past, my experience as a customer with them has been so attrocious that I definitely won't be recommending anything to do with RM to anyone in the near future! And I haven't even begun to talk about the added cost! Trust me, stay away, stay well away from CC4. That's bad coming from an Ex-Employee! (And no, I wasn't sacked or pushed! Just got a better opportunity, more money and closer to home!)
