It’s official! Google Drive is down! Just spoke to them. There is an international outage. ETA to resolution is 2 hours. Just typical that this happens with SLT are doing a presentation to staff where they are ALL using drive! There goes all the hard work on the cloud strategy!

When everyone says they're using Veeam. What product are they using. I ended up using Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, after having Google'd "Veeam Free" and ended up with Veeam Backup and Replication Free, which promptly killed my domain controller VM! I'm now using the Endpoint Agent to backup my DC VM to a file and then manually copying it to a USB hard drive.

Curiously, this is quite a nice place even if you don't work in IT anymore. I see you've found the general chat forum, you'll find quite a lot of interesting non-IT chat here. You're always free to go, but if you really don't wanna use Edugeek, just ignore it? Also...

Just out of interest, how do you automate your backup? What do you use?

Just for reference for anyone stumbling across this in the future, managed to get to the bottom of why this was happening. Basically, it isn't a good idea to create checkpoints on a domain controller. Hence why the corruption was occuring. Also, I was using the wrong Veeam product. I had installed Veeam Backup and Replication, whereas the more suitable option was Veeam Endpoint Backup. This appears to work like a more traditional backup program which you install an agent on the computer that needs to be backed up and then Veeam creates an image of the entire computer which can then be restored to a new VM. Presumably it would also work for a physical PC to perform a P2V. Not tested that yet though!

I spent the first few weeks building a brand new virtual server domain environment on a physical Windows Server 2016 server. Got everything done and dusted and all was working fine, until this morning. In another thread I posted yesterday, I talked about backup strategy and possibly looking at Veeam. This morning, I decided before I'd do anything, I'd take a checkpoint of the domain controller VM (DC01). Nothing happened. I tried again and nothing happened. I connected to the VM and the VM totally crashed. Couldn't ping the servers IP or anything. I tried to "Turn Off" the VM. Still nothing. So, I decided to reboot the physical PC. As soon as it came back up, I tried to boot up DC01 and got the following message: "An error occurred while trying to start the selected virtual machine. DC01 failed to change state." It felt like the VM had corrupted, so I created another one and re-attached the VHD files from DC01 and all was working fine. So, I installed Veeam free edition on to the physical server and tried to take a VeeamZip backup. The first thing it tries to do is create a checkpoint. As soon as it did, it failed. I checked Hyper-V and sure enough, the VM had completely frozen again. It seems like checkpoints are killing my VMs and as it stands, I have no DC or any way to back it up. Before I try to create the whole domain again from scratch in case it's the VHDs causing the issue, is there anything I can do to recover and is there any reason why this is happening?

lol, thanks! It's on the to do list. A few questions, which version and roughly, what kind of costs am I looking at. What will Veeam achieve that a simple screenshot backup to USB won't?

I've just commissioned a new server and domain. The setup consists of the following: HOST01 (Physical Server) Windows Server 2016 Dell PowerEdge T430 (I think off the top of my head!) 32GB RAM 4 x 4TB HDDs (RAID 5) Partitions: C:\ Drive: 500GB H:\ Drive (Hyper-V): 4TB (Might extend to 5TB) Unallocated: ~6.5TB DC01 (Domain Controller - Virtual Server) Windows Server 2016 8GB RAM VHD1: C:\ Drive - 500GB VHD2: 1.5TB (H:\ Drive - Home Folders: 1TB) (F:\ Drive - WDS: 500GB) VHD3: W:\ Drive (WSUS) - 500GB MIS01 (SIMS Server - Virtual Server) Windows Server 2016 8GB RAM VHD1: C:\ Drive - 500GB VHD2: D:\ Drive (SIMS Data) - 500GB The question I have is what is the best way to back this up? All our user data is now stored in Google Drive. The home folder shares is simply to give the users a working area for files that aren't compatible with Google Drive (ActivInspire etc). Staff have been warned that files won't be backed up, so it's not high on my priority list. Would the best way be to take snapshots every night and back them up to LGfL Gridstore? I have 2TB space allocated, so I won't be backin up all the VHDs, only the most vital to recover from a disaster. I've been told to look at Veeam, but I haven't had a proper look yet. What you you guys suggest?

I've not had a good experience with the rain in recent months. A sudden torrential downpour we had, flooded my server room and killed my CC4 server stone cold dead! (I guess seeing as we're now CC4 free, it was a blessing in disguise!)

I had the exact same experience. I also noticed that it didn't work for me when I booted Windows 10 in to the "special mode" (forgot the proper name!) but the mode that you use before you sysprep the machine!

You just love to hijack almost everything I post about LGfL don't you? [emoji19] Re-read the post. You have an option to have an Internet connection which is controlled and managed by LGfL/Atomwide or have an "option 2" which you control. Either way, you can open ports yourself, or you can request to have them opened for you.

Port opening is a doddle if you ask me? Just fill out a MIP request spreadsheet and then it's open within a few minutes. Also, just checked the Atomwide Support Site, the "just internet connection" is still there, it's under My Account > Declaration management > LGfL 2.0: Change to self-managed 'Option 2' connection

I'd advise taking a look at LGfL TRUSTnet. They are the largest supplier of broadband to the majority of schools across London and they have historically been very good both in service and support and the new CEO of LGfL is bringing in some really positive change and cost saving options for schools. TRUSTnet is now available to schools outside of London and I would definitely recommed taking a look.

I've always been with Virgin Media as no one else can come close to the 200Mbps speed. BT said the most I'd get on Infinity is 51Mbps. I had some issues in the past with high utilisation with VM and ended up getting a years free broadband. But they've now fixed those issues and I've got a flawless 200Mbps. I called up the other day as my contact had expired. I was paying £47/Month for 200Mbps broadband and phone (I never use the phone line to make any calls). I pulled the standard line of I'm leaving if you don't give me a better offer. They offered it to me for £39/Month. I said no I gave my 30 days notice. They called me back a few days later and offered me the whole package of 200Mbps and phone line for £25/Month (Inc line rental). I accepted it straight away! Rule of thumb, if you are out of contract, always threaten to leave, never accept their first offer and then actually give your 30 days notice to leave. They will call you back and don't worry if they don't, you can always cancel the cancellation anyway before the cancellation date. But 99% of the time they will call you back to keep your custom!

I'm trying to do a final backup of our data to an external hard drive before I decommission the old server. However, I've found that the user's home folders are filled with loads of junk temp files created by Microsoft Word. I've tried to do a search for "~$" but the search won't find the files at all, even though there are 1000s of them. Any ideas on how I can delete the files en mass?

Unfortunately, we have no Apple TVs and they are far more expensive than AirServer, which is much better feature wise. Initially looks simple enough, but looks like it's best for Chromebooks? Can't see how this would work with iPads. This would be wonderful, but I'm assuming that you would need the PC/printer to be plugged in to a Meraki switch as the forwarding needs to happen from the wired VLAN to the wireless VLAN. Unfortunately, my wired devices are still currently plugged in to dumb unmanaged Netgear switches Thanks for that. I think that was what @caffrey mentioned in his post, but the step by step guide is very useful!

Printers aren't the only problem though. AirServer is also an issue.

I recently implemented a Meraki WiFi network at one of my schools and used the opportunity to reconfigure my previously majority flat network in to separate VLANs. Previously, all wired and wireless clients sat on the same VLAN. To try and keep bandwidth at most optimum, I've now set it up in the following manner: VLAN 1: Wired Clients VLAN (PCs, Printers etc) VLAN 10: Wireless Clients VLAN (School Laptops, School iPads) (These 2 VLANs have full connectivity between each other.) VLAN 4: There is also a separate VLAN for Meraki infrastructure (Switches, Wireless Access Points) We don't have a layer 3 switch on site, our LGfL provided Cisco ASA does the layer 3 routing. Basically, when someone connects to an AP, it sends the DHCP request from VLAN 4, through the ASA on to the DHCP server on VLAN 1 and then the DHCP server assigns the wireless client an address on VLAN 10. The Cisco ASA can't do the DHCP because it already does DHCP for our VoIP clients (Another completely separate VLAN) and only supports running 1 DHCP server. This is fine and it's all great and working and any broadcast traffic stays off the data VLAN (1). Now, the issue I'm having is Bonjour. All our PCs and printers sit on VLAN 1. However, the iPads are on VLAN 10. Therefore, none of the iPads are able to print, or connect to AirServer on the PCs because all these services use Bonjour, which doesn't seem to traverse VLANs. Is there any way I'd be able to overcome this issue, without essentially flattening the network?

I never knew about this! Sure would have made my deployment a lot easier. It's like the perfect version of Windows 10. Windows 10, with almost zero bloat!

Does anyone else think the US Super Nintendo looked absolutely hideous!
