Academies get never ending bad press, but as someone who has gone through a lot of change, TUPE via BSF and TUPE from LA to MAT, I have to say that the press that most small MATs get us unfair. Our MAT has definitely updated its policies and procedures for the better. We have much more stringent processes especially for purchasing and procurement. The due diligence levels are very high and I believe it does very well to ensure that public money is spent correctly and only in the interest of teaching and learning. We also have auditors in several times a term keeping track of finances and expenditure. If anything, I believe we are much more thoroughly compliant as a MAT than we were as an LA school.

I've got a fake ID too this year... Well, it's not so fake really. Still got my real name, but the emails go to my spam email account, I've been promoted to "Chief Technical Officer" and I'm also a "School Leader", which gets you in to some VIP areas with free lunch and refreshments! 😜

That's just it though... I've still got the same battery drain, even without WhatsApp being the culprit. With WhatsApp enabled: With WhatsApp disabled (No notifications, not used for over 24 hours) What still isn't explained is what us causing drain when the phone isn't being used. None of the apps are being used between 1am and 7am. So what is using 15-20% of battery?

This is the first thing Apple asked me to check. WhatsApp was the biggest consumer. So they asked me to disable WhatsApp for 24 hours. I did so and WhatsApp has now disappeared down the list. Now it's Safari that is the top user. Again, I charged the phone to 100% tonight and went to bed at 1:30am. Woke up at 7:30am and the phone was at 86%. I had 4 notifications. I can't see how 4 notifications can use up 14% of battery whilst I'm sleeping!

Yes, Bluetooth is off in the settings as I don't really have any use for it barring the odd AirDrop transfer, but that is rare. I wouldn't really switch off WiFi, as I would like it on in case I need to received anything urgent and I've never had to switch it off on previous iPhones. I live in a small flat and mobile and WiFi coverage is fine around the house, so I can't see this could be causing the issue. I will try that tonight!

I just brought a new iPhone X on the iPhone Upgrade Programme as my iPhone 6 Plus decided to develop a failure and I didn't wanna pay the ~£150 to replace what was a heavily ailing phone. Anyway, I decided to get the iPhone X as I am now in a position to be able to afford the monthly instalments and I also liked the prospect of having a new phone after 11 months. I've had the phone for 6 days now and I have been quite happy with it except for 1 alarming issue. The battery drain during night times seems to be crazy. I've been going to bed over the Xmas break at around 1 or 2am, having charged the phone to 100%. I wake up in the morning, with little or no notifications and noticed that the battery percentage has dropped to between 80-85%. What on earth could be causing my battery to drain 15-20% at night time? I've already done the usual battery saving techniques: Switched off Background App Refresh Switched off "Hey Siri" Switched off Location Services for a whole host of System Services Switched off Wi-Fi Assist Switched on Low Power Mode Turned the screen brightness down to about 30% Any ideas?

I definitely prefer ExCeL... Because it's a 15 minute drive from my house! 😜 And I can also use my car to store all the excess freebies when the bags get too heavy!

I've verbally (and banned in the ICT AUP) all USB Flash Drives. I was planning to apply a physical ban by installing USBDLM, assigning K, L, M, N, O to USB Flash Drives and then blocking these drives via GPO. Unless someone can advise on a better method.

I'm getting this error again now with another cumulative update. This time it's KB4048954. Anyone else had this issue? Getting really annoying now!

I managed to resolve it at one of my sites. I had to uninstall KB4011166, close down Programs and Features, launch Programs and Features again and then uninstall KB4011165 and then close down Programs and Features, launch Programs and Features again and then uninstall KB4011050. As soon as I did this, I managed to resolve the issue. However... I tried the exact same thing at my other school with the exact same set up and after doing this, I'm now getting the following error: No idea what to do next or why it's happening at one school and not the other with identical setups!

I got a call from my former Misco account manager yesterday, about 80% of the Misco staff across the board, not just sales, have all moved to PCM. If you give PCM a call and ask for your account manager at Misco, you might get some luck. I also use CDW from time to time and had been using Kelway since about 2004 before they got brought out by CDW.

The gaming industry turning in to Hollywood with all their "reboots"? NES Mini, SNES Mini, Mega Drive - I'm waiting for Nintendo's new hand held replacement for the DS, I heard a rumour it's gonna be called the Game Boy! I can even imagine it not being bundled with Tetris due to licensing reasons! Also, will the Commodore 64 Mini come with true to life realism with the 50 minute game loading times? I remember my dad would let me go and play on the computer for an hour. By the time the game had finished loading for 50 minutes, my play time was up!

I've got the same issue with 2 of my PCs, but I can't see those KBs installed in Programs and Features. I did fine 4011166, uninstalled and rebooted, but that didn't fix the issue. Not sure what else to do and it's hampering the users ability to run a vital report.

Most school Internet connections come with something like 99% up times and high SLAs. Do you really want to avoid cloud storage and better, easier access to files, collaboration and unlimited disk space, just because the Internet might go down once in a while? I'd rather have a single point of failure than multiple points of failure. What if the server hard disk fails? What if the PSU fails? What if the motherboard fails? What if the NAS box fails? What if the users fill up the space on the server? In theory anything could go wrong and for me, cloud storage, in this case, Google Drive, is much lesser risk than on site servers/storage. With Google Drive, all you need is a device with an Internet connection and you have access to your files.

Fair enough, but I still think it's pretty good value for money getting at least 10 years out of a switch considering they offer a 10 year license for the price of 5. Remember the device is covered under warranty during this time too, so should it fail, Meraki will replace it too.

That's weird because the firewall has always been off and it's always worked. I'll give that a try and see how it goes.

Yeah, I'm thinking of doing full reboots on everything (switches, all PCs, DC etc) but I'm on annual leave now, so I might pop in on my last day just to get some testing in before the staff return from half term.
