They also said that Atomwide would be able to provide more support with investigations and packet captures, which has always been the issue I've had. Needing to request what is being blocked, without knowing what is being blocked in the first place. For those who are struggling with RAv3, are you using RAv3 with your users or just for yourselves? I've simply allowed category 2 and can now remote access using Teamviewer or senso.cloud. Both of which work perfectly for what I need. But yes, if it's users who need to remote access, then a better RAv3 would be needed. For me, this is where migrating everything to G Suite has really helped as all of our documents and data are now on Google Drive.

That's what's great about LGfL under @JohnJackson's leadership. He always has time to listen and hear feedback from customers and make real change and improvements based on this feedback.

As for what you've heard, it's not really advertising anything that you aren't already paying for as part of your subscription (There may be a few items here and there, but never a hard sell). The conference is open to LGfL customers only (unless non subscribers are willing to pay for tickets) and it only informs people of the services that they already receive as part of their subscription. A few weeks ago, they held the DigiSafe conference. There was almost nothing advertised at the conference at all in terms of the speakers and seminars. It was a full day of information sharing and highlighting of the real dangers and threats our children face today and what we can do to keep them safe. The annual curriculum conference (this year being held on 25th April) is a full day of CPD and information sharing for teaching staff covering areas that will help them to deliver their teaching and learning and also how LGfL can support that. I also always say, that I am where I am today because of these events and the opportunities to connect and network with the people in the right places who can and do listen to geniune feedback and try to make improvements for the wider community. The vast majority of us are great at complaining about what's wrong with these subscriptions, but never take the initiative to try to put things right. These events are those opportunities. That's why I spend all 4 days at BETT and attend as many other events and exhibitions as I can. These opportunities are vital and I wish more and more IT professionals grabbed these opportunities more often. And hey, it's free if you're an LGfL customer and if you don't get anything out of the day, you get fed pretty well!

Wouldn't you want on-access scanning switched on given ransomware attacks? I know the historical arguments about causing delays when opening files, but in this case it's better safe than sorry right?

I've got some Dell 7440 AIO at my school. The regular model comes with a soft screen, but the touch screen model comes with a glass screen. I'm pretty happy with the PC, but the last time I checked, the price had shot through the roof!

Not really, we are MAT with 2 primary schools. 2 form and 4 form. We migrated over to Bromcom last February. For me, the decision was based on the fact that it is the number 1 MIS for MATs in the UK and also, as far as I could see from my investigations, it was the most feature filled in terms of making the transition easier for staff from SIMS.

This is not strictly true. I did quite some extensive testing with Microsoft Word documents when I was initially looking at G Suite vs Office 365. I have several documents that I created in Word 2016, when I uploaded them and converted to Google Docs, the formatting messed up. However, I tested the same Word document in Word online and it too messed up the formatting. I tried with several other documents that had the same issue. It was then that I learnt that it wasn't a G Suite or Office 365 issue, but more of an issue with web technologies not being able to support the document created from the full featured desktop application. Yes, there were some staff that had to re-format some documents here and there. Once again, it wasn't a showstopper and now the vast majority of our documents are created in Google Docs/Sheets/Slides.

I had similar experiences, where some users would look for a small feature in Word and when they found they couldn't do that in Google Docs, they would try to make that their show stopper! Ultimately, the discussions about cutting costs and realisation that these issues weren't the greatest in the world, common sense prevailed. You can't look at making cost savings and efficiencies if you aren't willing to change. Change is not easy, but if you don't embrace change, you will only suffer in the long run. The key is looking at platform change from an outcomes perspective. If you look at what you want to achieve, then it doesn't matter what platform you use. Just like it doesn't matter if you drive to work in an Aston Martin or a Ford Fiesta, the outcome is getting to work on time, not how you achieve it. Once I made leaders understand this, the change became a lot easier for them to embrace.

The transition was obviously a challenge initially, much like any change. But I held several training sessions on how to migrate their home folders to My Drive and then shared documents to Team Drives. Once over this initial learning curve, pretty much everyone got used to it. I've very heavily pushed Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as alternatives to Office apps, with a view to doing away with Office altogether to save on licensing costs. The vast majority of the staff are now seeing the value of working with Google Docs fully in the cloud as opposed to having to upload and download Office documents. So, the burden kinda became non existent. Even some of our biggest detractors have become fans of the ease of Google Docs. Yeah, we're using Team Drives. I set up 1 single domain for our MAT with 2 Team Drives, 1 for each school. The SLT then put a folder structure in place and staff now store files in the designated folders. Any staff who require private Team Drives (e.g. Safeguarding, Finance, SLT, HR etc) have their own Team Drives. Again, most of our productivity has transferred to the cloud. We stopped using ActivInspire once Promethean initially announced that they were discontinuing it. There were a few not so happy members of staff, but the decision was made to simply move over to Google Slides as it was the better way forward with a view to taking away our dependency on Windows PCs. I do have a vision to eventually be fully cloud based so that all of our teaching and learning productivity can happen on the cloud through a Chromebook, thus removing the curriculum need to tether to a server of any sort.

I moved all of the home folder and shared area data at my MAT on to Google Drive in August 2017 and at another school also in August 2018. We have no data on-premise anymore at the MAT. We don't use Google Drive File Stream. Our users access all of their data through the Google Chrome browser.

With regards to the 30 minute timeout, you can actually increase that to the end of the day currently. I've done it for all of my schools through the Atomwide support site. I can't remember exactly, but it might need the headteacher to log in to the support site, but Atomwide will be able to let you know that.

There was an announcement on a new provision coming as a joint venture between LGfL and Atomwide, but not too many details yet. According to this tweet from John Jackson, "LGfL Free2Roam" will be available from March 2019.

I've seen lots of tools that enable you to provision G Suite accounts from Active Directory. However, are there any tools that do it the other way round? Our G Suite accounts are provisioned by Wizkids, extracting the data from Bromcom using Wonde. I'd like to then provision these accounts in to AD if possible. Does anyone know of a suitable tool?

This isn't anywhere as near as necessary any more. The last few years I've been plenty a hydrated and replenished by the freebies at the stands. (One of the only reasons I go to the RM stand!) Dunno if it was BETT or another exhibition, but they were giving away water bottles on entry.

Why not just continue to use the existing G Suite domain that the MAT has? I'm presuming it is already a verified G Suite for Education domain?
