    I have had one of my schools order a new RAID controller battery after OpenManage reported that it had failed. I have found instructions on physically replacing the card, however, those instructions don't tell me whether I need to have the server turned off to be able to do it. One colleague is of the opinion that if I shut the server down and remove the old battery then I will lose the RAID settings and therefore destroy the data on it. He thinks I should be able to "hot swap" it with the server running. Another colleague's response is "better ask Dell". Has anyone else ever experienced changing a raid controller battery? If so, did you get advice direct from Dell or did you seek instructions yourself? Do you have any sources I could look at? (You can probably tell I've never done it before myself)

    In AD, we set the User's Home folder property to \\servername\users\pupils\intakeyear\%username%\documents. Then in GP, we set the folder redirection to "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location" and "Redirect to the user's home directory". This seems to prevent the renaming bug that you are seeing.

    What server OS are you on? I push out Proxy Settings using an "Internet Settings" Item. -- User Config > Preferences > Control Panel Settings > Internet Settings > -- Right-Click > New > Internet Explorer 8 (if 2008R2) or Internet Explorer 10 (if 2012R2) -- Set all the relevant things like homepage and proxy settings, make sure they all have green lines underneath (press F5 or F6 to turn them from red to green) -- Exit that, and then within the same GP Management Editor Window, go to User Config > Policies > Windows Settings > Scripts (logon/logoff) -- Double-click on either Logon or Logoff, then click on "Show Files" -- In the address bar, click on "User", then "Preferences", then "Internet Settings" -- Open the XML file in a text editor and located the "Max=X.X.X.X" property. -- Change this to Max=99.0.0.0 (a high number that will incorporate any updates to IE11 etc) -- Save and exit. Apply your GPO to whichever users you want to have this proxy Certainly valid for 2008R2!

    Way before Christmas I re-installed WSUS on a 2008R2 DC. For a while it limped along until last week. Whenever I try to open WSUS via either Server Manager or Admin Tools or wherever else you can open it from, the snap-in fails to load and essentially MMC crashes. I do have a restart pending after some Windows Updates but unfortunately I'm only at this place once a week in the morning where they are heavily reliant on their server and network shared areas so I don't have the option to reboot when I am here. Are there any other things I can try before succumbing to telling them they NEED to reboot the server?

    It is my understanding the on a domain controller or domain-joined server, the local admin IS the domain admin. I was taught on a course that there is essentially no such thing as local admin on a server.

    Does anyone know where Future Digital (formerly Forensic Software) are now hosting their Policy Central removal tool? I haven't seen them put it on downloads.forensicsoftware.co.uk - /pce/public/ for January or February of this year thus far... (Apologies if there is a more appropriate form area!)

    Do you not have folder redirection for Desktop/Start Menu giving shortcuts to Office, Chrome, IE etc? If you do, I don't see why #2 would be a problem

    Do staff have less restrictive internet settings than pupils? I found in the past that if you set security settings too high then it prevents things like flash and java from running. I had a school I spent weeks trying to figure out why any site like YouTube or iPlayer that uses Flash to play videos wasn't working. A colleague came in and within 10 minutes had lowered the security settings in the Internet Explorer control panel item in Group Policy and suddenly it all started working.

    Computer Config > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > File System > Add File Type path to folder and press OK, then you can apply NTFS permissions the same way you would on any normal folder

    What is it that you like about Tapes? Is it the ability to take it off site?

    When we deploy Sophos in this exact environment, we tend to do the auto install as mentioned by @DavetheITguy. Sometimes it doesn't always install automatically so to make sure, we use a batch script to install with the username and password encrypted by the obfuscationutil and add it as a startup script in group policy and apply it to all computers. If you have AD sync setup then your machines will automatically be put into the right groups/folders in SEC!

    I started by trying to remove the screws altogether and it suddenly was going in a straight line (not 100% perfect but a vast improvement). I then put the screws back in a bit tighter and the squiggly was worse than before. I have now given it a go of loosening then checking then loosening some more and now i'd say the teachers who use it will be far happier with their board. Not perfect, but IMO it proves the guys who came out to check it were very much wrong!! (I did the firmware update check and it was fully up to date!!)

    I have a school which has a 3 year old Smart Board that will not write in a straight line. No matter how steady your hand is, the line always comes out squiggly as if you have been meticulously zig-zagging across the page. I have updated the software to 11.4 (the highest the school can go to without having to go through the subscription cr*p) and oriented with 20 points and still it comes out squiggly. I told the school to get in touch with the company who installed it and when they came round, they promptly told the school the software needed updating. Call me skeptical but I feel like this is a fob off because they are trying to get the school to buy a new board. Are firmware updates to the board included with Smart 11.4? or is updating the firmware a separate process? If it is separate, how on earth am I supposed to update it as I cannot find anything obvious! Slightly Scratch the above. I have found how to update the firmware. If an upgrade is either not available or doesn't fix it. I'd welcome any suggestions as to what else I can try! Or am I going to have to face the inevitable and get them to buy a new board?

    I have been having lots of issues with WSUS in pretty much most of my schools lately (I look after about 10) whereby clients are not reporting in and it is only being fixed by running a troubleshooter manually (sometimes on wired only too if it's a laptop). Obviously it would be impractical to do this manually on every single machine. Is there a way or a script I can use that will automatically run the troubleshooter (which is a diagcab file) which should then fix a lot of my issues? I have a mix of schools running either 2008R2 or 2012 or 2012R2 all to Windows 7 clients

    On 12th December, I have to give a 40 minute session on setting up Office 365 for a school to my fellow technicians. I have written a setup guide before so doing a practical session shouldn't be too hard. As part of the practical session I need to show the team how to find the DNS records that need to be added to verify the domain being used for Office 365. Can I have multiple different Office 365 accounts entering the same domain name or do i have to have a different domain name for every account? In an ideal world, I want people to start their own A3 (or E3 should I say) free trial and add a domain (even if it's not verified) and add users and assign permissions etc.

    I have a RM Minibook 120 that gets stuck on the RM splash screen and will not go any further regardless of what buttons i press on the keyboard. I did a bit of googling and it suggested that the BIOS/CMOS battery may need replacing. However, I can't figure out where to get at it. I can remove the hard drive and ram easy enough but have no idea where the battery is located to be able to replace it

    Just found this post. In my 11 months of looking after a batch of 30 of them I have had to do a rebuild on probably about 20 occasions due to misuse by kids not shutting them down properly!

    Upon further consultation with a colleague, he is under the impression that we would have met with a lot more issues than just clients reporting into WSUS if there was an issue with the sysprepping of the image :/
