  1. Yes they were all built from a FAT (or Reference) Image that had all Windows Updates up to July 2014 installed plus a few small bits of software like movie maker etc.
  2. Domain Firewall is disabled. It appears that machines are reporting in once I have manually run the diagnostic tool, picking up and installing updates. However when I try half an hour later (due to more updates becoming available), I have to run the diagnostic tool again!
  3. have looked and both "Set the intranet update service for detecting updates:" and "Set the intranet statistics server" are pointing to "http://servername:8530"
  4. I am having trouble getting my client machines to report into WSUS. It seems that wired machines are OK once I run a WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab on them. How can I automate the running of this rather than having to go round each client individually? FYI - It is Windows Server 2012R2 with a single VM acting as the DC going to x86 Windows 7 Clients
  5. Of the 3 servers I put in, 2 of them had 8 x 500GB HDDs which I did 2 in RAID-1 for the OS, 5 in RAID-5 for Data and 1 Global HotSpare. The 3rd server had 6 500GB HDDs at 2 in RAID-1 and 4 in RAID-5 and no Global HotSpare
  6. is there a previous version that wasn't removed properly?
  7. I put in a few servers over the Summer into schools. 1 x 16gb RAM host and 2 x 32gb Hosts. They both run 1 VM which acts as the DC. I gave the vDC on the 16gb host 10GB and it is running fine leaving the host with 6gb (i gave 24gb to the 32gb hosts leaving 8gb for the host).
  8. I was taught the NEOS Server 2012 Administration course by Alan Hutt...the man's a legend at the company I work for! - - - Updated - - - Definitely go with NEOS, you get unlimited tea/coffee while you learn and you also get (or at least you did a year ago) lunch at the Farriers Arms around the corner included in the cost of your course!
  9. I have a school that have 2 sets of netbooks that hardly ever get turned off properly and therefore rarely get any Windows Updates installed (only when I'm there and have the time to get some of them out). I am wondering if anyone has a best practice for making sure updates get installed when there's not a technician around to force them to be installed? It is a bare metal Server 2012 to Windows 7 x86 clients. I turn on auto-download and install of updates. I turn on the default start menu shutdown action to say "install updates and shut down". Is there anything else I can do to try and push the updates out?

    MDT Update

Probably the wrong forum area but does anyone know if there is going to be a new version of MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) any time soon? I'm kind of the unofficial guy who obtains the most up to date installers for software at work - and yes, I know I'm incredibly sad
  11. Is it possible that an NTBackup schedule can interfere with Backup Exec therefore causing the backup to fail?
  12. I am helping a school who think their rapid writing is 'not working'. As a test, I made a new group (within the software) and added 2 users. I then went through and completed a couple of books/tests and it seemed to successfully write to the database. Is it correct that the "teacher" needs to exit and re-enter the program for the Allocation & Records page to update accordingly? If I finish a test/book (remain in the software) and then log in to the teacher page and go to Allocation & Records and it was up to date for the user I just completed a test on but wasn't showing the 2nd user properly - UNTIL i completely exited then came back in. FYI - The database sits on a shared network drive where all users have full control. It is Server 2012R2 on a Virtual DC to x64 Windows 7 Pro Clients
  13. Ahhh thank you! They use WebDav which to make it work was setup with a .pac file so I will have to look at next time I am at the school! Have set myself a reminder and I will let you know my results!
  14. I'm using domain administrator. It is a tiny primary school so they only have 1 server which is nearly 4.5yrs old (due for replacement in Summer 2015) and running 2003. My limited experience tells me WSB is not available on '03 - NT Backup being the MS solution. I am just trying to backup the essential folders of data/documents and system state.
  15. I am using good old administrator
  16. Firstly, mods/admins feel free to move this to a different forum section if i've picked the wrong one. Anyway, I have deployed the ScratchJr app to iPads at one of my schools but the app itself does nothing when you open it. It simply sits on a screen showing the ScratchJr logo with a few credits at the bottom. I have tried completely removing the app. Both from Mac (which i used to deploy via configurator) and the iPad and reinstalling but to no avail...anyone got any ideas? have I missed something obvious?
  17. I am having some issues with Backup Exec 12.5 backing up to my school's NAS device. The schedule has a Full Friday backup with a Differential running Monday to Thursday. It keeps failing the weekly friday backup and Backup Exec is being very helpful giving me the following error: E00084f4 - An unknown error has occurred. For additional information regarding this error refer to link [insert generic link here] Backup exec is a horrible piece of software to use, especially on Server 2003 (the school's head isn't a fan of spending large amounts of money so it was a struggle to move them away from a tape drive, let alone spending money on a better piece of software). I was wondering what people's experience was with the BUE error and what they have done to combat it and if anyone has any general ideas as to what might cause it or give me ideas on what i can check? It works perfectly fine doing the differentials Monday to Thursday. Am I better off using NTBackup to go to a NAS device? FYI, it is a 6TB QNAP mapped by iSCSI to the server which as mentioned earlier is 2003 with 32-bit Windows 7 clients.
  18. I did think of that. It would definitely work for one user in particular. However, there are some members of staff (SLT) who use Unfiltered when they are in their offices, but when they are out teaching in classrooms they need to get the filtered proxy. Another thought is to remove GP Preferences like you said, remove any internet explorer proxy settings, set chrome to get system proxy settings, and then deploy Registry keys containing the proxy settings for the relevant machines and therefore users should get the right proxy regardless of what machine they log on to...stop me if that won't work!
  19. I am at a school that uses 2 different proxy settings - we call them filtered and unfiltered. Only certain machines have access to the unfiltered (controlled by IP address). However, there are several users who flit around between machines that use the different proxy settings. How can I set up my proxy settings to make sure they get the correct proxy on whatever machine they log in to? (preferably without any form of login script). The only method I have found so far is here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/7d420c66-2e89-43d7-b136-baf5f69690f1/locking-down-ie-proxy-settings-under-pc-settingsnetworkproxy-on-windows-81?forum=w8itprosecurity FYI, it is a Server 2012 R2 Domain with x64 Windows 7 Clients (yes i know the article is aimed towards Windows 8)
  20. Sorry, I was typing from memory, it was about the occurrences of the digit 2 not number 2! Although, it would be a great trick question in the interview if they actually said 2!
  21. FYI, the program returns the answer as 600,000 for 1 and 1million
  22. Fail, I wasnt counting 22 as 2 occurences in my head
  23. However, having 1 and 30, it returns 13 where I believe it should be 12? 2,12,20-29?
  24. THANK YOU! I added apostrophes around the 2 and it looks to be giving the correct result. Certainly for number1 = 1 and number2 = 2! if digits[i] == '2'
  25. Hi, I read a Daily Mail article the other day with an interview question that said "If I wrote down all the numbers from 1 to 1,000,000, how many times would I have written down the number 2?". Daily Mail said the result was 111,111 which I didn't trust and another source said 599,985 so I decided to write a computer program to calculate the real answer. Java was always my strongest language at university so here is what I came out with: Hey Jord, how are you guys? how's everything with the house? You were always good with Java, can you tell me why this program is always returning 0 as the result? import java.util.Scanner; import java.util.Arrays; class FindNumberOfOccurences { public static void main (String[] args) { int number1 = 0; int number2 = 0; String currentNumber = ""; int count = 0; String S; String numberInText; char two = 2; Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); //Enter first number System.out.println("Please enter number 1"); number1 = Integer.parseInt(in.nextLine()); System.out.println("You entered " + number1); //Enter second number System.out.println("Please enter number 2"); number2 = Integer.parseInt(in.nextLine()); System.out.println("You entered " + number2); char[] digits = new char[number1]; while (number1 <= number2) { System.out.println("number 1 is " + number1); //Convert number to String currentNumber = Integer.toString(number1); //Print current Number System.out.println("Current Number = " + currentNumber); //Convert String to character array digits = currentNumber.toCharArray(); //Print current array System.out.println(digits); //Count occurences of "2" in array for (int i=0;i < digits.length;i++) { //Print current character in array System.out.println("Current Array Character is " + digits[i]); //If character in array = 2 then increment counter if (digits[i] == 2) { count++; } } //Display current count System.out.println("Current count = " + count); number1++; } //Print result System.out.println("Number 2 occurs " + count + " times"); } } There are no compiler errors being thrown up but no matter what 2 numbers I input, the result of count always comes out as 0. Can anyone point out where I'm going wrong?
