  1. Supposedly, deploying the MSI (if obtained via app data) is not actually supported by Oracle. They say use a command line such as "javaexename.exe /s".
  2. We have had direct face to face contact with Simon Rogers from Future Digital (formerly Forensic Software) who informed us the Java issue is due to the MSI not installing a certain part of Java that makes Java detect work. If you install via the exe instead, it works a treat. Just use javaexename.exe /s in a batch script and it installs fine. I installed .NET 4.5.2 via windows updates & WSUS in my custom WIM. I haven't been able to pull through 4.6 yet (assuming it is available in WSUS). .29 does not have a combo MSI installer and there are no plans for them to create one "due to there being issues with previous versions". That was from the Future Digital support team! They supply a separate MSI installer for C++ redistributable. Feels like a step backwards for me. I may try bundling Java and the .28 MSI together in one MDT application to see if that makes it any better!
  3. Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I am attempting to deploy Policy Central Enterprise v6 via MDT. I have set it up as an application with a batch script running "msiexec /i PCEgpo.....msi /qn". I have Java 8.66 also deploying via MDT application (this works perfectly with a /s after the .exe name). However, PCE6 is failing to actually install even though Event Viewer logs and MDT deployment logs both say it was successful. I am using the Combo MSI and .NET 4.5.2 is in my custom WIM. Does anyone have any ideas where to look? I have previously tried having the msiexe /i [msi name] /qn as the application command line but nothing doing. It is MDT 2012 Update 1 with ADK version 8.59.25584 and Windows 7 x86 clients.
  4. Hi, I eventually had no further complaints on this. I think the school just learned to deal with the fact that test results weren't recorded on the database for the teacher to see until the pupil exited the program. Are there any pre-requisites for the software that aren't installed? i.e. .NET? Sorry I can't be of any further help to you
  5. I tend not to exclude the whole of google, I tend to just redirect User Data, look for the "Set User Data Directory" policy. I put that path as a folder within their home drive i.e. N:\Google Chrome (where N: is the home drive letter).
  6. Sorry for the delayed response. A colleague on our Service Desk fielded a call from the school's resident volunteer technician regarding this. It would appear that the group policy I had set to redirect User Data to a "Google Chrome" folder in their home drive was causing it. As soon as my colleague removed this, the user was able to open Chrome. In fact, I've just checked myself and I've never seen Chrome open so quickly! I've never had this in other schools I've put it in either.
  7. It started yesterday when I was at the school, unfortunately I am only there for half a day fortnightly (they're a small first school with 3 classes). Can't quite say for sure but I believe it still didn't run I have not made any deliberate attempts to prevent Chrome from updating To my knowledge they won't have signed in with personal accounts. They are however a Google school for emails but again I don't think they will have signed in with those accounts.
  8. Seems to be all users, had 3 different people report that they couldn't open Chrome. Admittedly I didn't check 2 of them to make sure it was the same issue **cue messages about assuming things**
  9. I deploy the MSI downloaded from https://www.google.co.uk/chrome/business/browser/admin/ So yeah, its the Enterprise version, think I also tried just downloading the exe from https://www.google.co.uk/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html as well and was met with the same error/issue.
  10. Yesterday I ran into a very strange problem. Google Chrome was failing to launch for a standard domain user. However, it ran perfectly if you right-clicked the icon and "run as administrator" and entered the credentials of an admin user. It also ran perfectly if I was logged in as "administrator". When trying to launch as standard domain user, it didn't even show me chrome.exe in Task Manager. For obvious reasons this is not what I want and not what the school want. Has anyone ever come across this issue? I tried uninstalling chrome and reinstalling. Tried fresh downloads of up to date EXEs & MSIs and still had the same issue. They are 2008R2 to 64-bit windows 7 clients FYI.
  11. I just answered my own question. Further down the list there was "Turn off the Security Settings Check feature". I tested with the user and no prompt appeared with the setting set to enabled.
  12. I have a couple of users who are getting frustrated by a prompt they get which warns them their security settings might put their computer at risk. I am happy that what is set won't affect them. How can I put a setting into group policy which permanently ignores this prompt therefore it doesn't show up?I have the following set to enabled: User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Prevent "Fix Settings" functionalityThe description of this suggests that it won't get rid of the notification bar, it will just disable the button which allows the user to "Fix Settings"Are there any other settings anyone can think of off the top of their heads to get rid of it entirely?FYI - They are a 2012 server to 32-bit windows 7 clients running IE11.
  13. The school in question is near Tewkesbury, about half an hour from Worcester City Centre. Just had a quick look and their website says completely free and they'll collect from anywhere in the UK. Could be EXACTLY what I'm after!
  14. I could do that but I'd probably get fired for doing it as I haven't had the proper training . However, I could tell the school they could do it and once that's done they could just take it to their nearest tip surely?
  15. Just had a quick look at them and it looks like you need 30 items, the most I think I can stretch it to that they have to get rid of is about 12
  16. Possibly been asked many times before, can anyone recommend any IT recycling companies who will come and collect equipment for either free or as cheap as possible? I have a very demanding school to go to later on who want rid of a few machines and also want me to securely wipe them before they'll let them go. The only secure wiping method I have at my disposal is DBAN which takes hours and hours to complete.
  17. I know with Google Chrome there is a policy of "Set User Data Directory" which I often set to a folder within the user's home/documents folder. Is there an equivalent for IE?
  18. I already do this, but as I travel between around 12 first/primary/middle schools, I'm not always there to load the very latest MSI all the time. Pretty much all of our schools that we support are running Windows 7 so for now we have to stick with deploying an MSI via group policy. A lot of my schools use Chrome already due to having the built in flash player. However, there are a small amount who, by habit, still use IE and a lot of the educational sites they use are still flash based so it often doesn't work for them due to Flash not being updated.
  19. This is probably an old question that's been asked many times before so I apologise in advance. I also apologise if there's a better section to have posted this in. Is there a way I can allow Adobe Flash Player updates to install either in the background like Chrome does or allow non-admin users to install it without giving those users local admin rights? Previously, I have always suppressed any update notifications by editing the relevant property within the MSI. Is there a property I can edit to allow non-admins to install the update so I don't have to keep manually putting a new MSI in every time Adobe release an update?
  20. That is my next step when I can get hold of what I think is the phone number attached to the locked out account. When my former colleague left, his phone was handed down to the person who replaced him. That person has also now left so it is gathering dust in the admin manager's drawer!
  21. A few years ago, a former colleague of mine started some R&D into Office 365 (our organisation knew diddly squat about it back then) and he started setting up a school that he supported. It ground to a halt halfway through when the original admin account for their original tenant was locked out. He had setup their domain and had it verified with the TXT record and then setup ADFS for SSO. If I try to sign in with [email protected], it redirects me. However, the box that it was setup on, died on it's backside about 6 months ago. If I try to sign into the original tenant account that's locked out, it allows me to begin the process of resetting the password. The big fail is that the rescue email my former colleague put contains a typo in the domain name and therefore no verification codes will come through to that email address. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get into this account? One suggestion was contacting Office 365 customer support to see if they would grant access or delete the domain from O365 for us. Another was to get the school to get a new domain name entirely (which sounds more hassle than it's worth).
  22. Thank you @howartp. Your suggestion put me definitely on the right track. I now have it successfully using the netbios name instead of FQDN. Your suggestion of "-replace" didn't quite work. However, the following did: $UsersPath = $UsersPath.replace($dnsroot,$Netbios) FYI the full code for generating the dfs path is: $dnsroot = (GetADDomain).DNSRoot $Netbios = $Env:USERDOMAIN $dfsroot = Get-DfsnRoot $dfspath = $dfsroot.Path $UsersPath = $dfspath + "\Users" $UsersPath = $UsersPath.replace($dnsroot,$Netbios) If anyone out there has a solution which will do it in less lines then by all means give me a suggestion!
  23. Update: I have managed to get it to detect the dfs namespace and put it into a variable. However, it gives the FQDN in the path. Is there any advantage other than reducing the overall file path length to having it only put the NetBIOS domain name into the path? If so, how could I get it to output the NetBIOS name? Currently I have the following lines: $dfsroot = Get-DfsnRoot $dfspath = $dfsroot.Path $UsersPath = $dfspath + "\Users" With an example FQDN of "hogwarts.com" and DFS Namespace name of "hog", $UsersPath gives "\\hogwarts.com\hog\Users"
  24. Hi all, I am in the process of developing a user creation script for my colleagues in powershell as our existing VBS script is just too slow. We use Domain based DFS Namespaces and I am trying to get my head around the DFS cmdlets available in Powershell. How can I detect an existing dfs namespace and use the detected path which I will then assign to the User's ProfilePath and HomeDirectory values? I am developing and testing currently on a 2012R2 machine. If I am too vague with my request, let me know!
  25. I am in the midst of developing a Powershell script from an original I found on the web to cater to my colleagues needs. We currently use a VBS script developed by some colleagues who no longer work with us in conjunction with a spreadsheet of users. I am looking to reduce the amount of information required in this spreadsheet and ultimately reduce the preparation time required for it. In a lot of schools, we have started implementing DFS Namespaces instead of pointing directly to folders on a server. I am wondering if there is any way currently (I know it's going to be featured in Powershell on the new version of Windows Server) of retrieving a DFS namespace so that the script can generate the path for user's profile and home folder itself? The original script adds the user and moves it to the relevant OU. My additions include actually creating the user's home and profile folders and applied permissions. My next step is to reduce the total time from obtaining the list of new users to them being fully uploaded to AD which is where my thinking of generating paths automatically came from. I have tested what I have done so far on Server 2008R2 and 2012 and 2012R2 and it's good so far. I'd appreciate any ideas or if you need anymore info from me let me know! NOTE: I am a complete newbie to powershell and I appreciate there may already be scripts out there that can do what I want, I learn better by doing it myself then trying to decipher someone else's code
