If you look on the fibre cable it will more often or not have it written on how many cores and fibre type.. 8 core 50/125 OM3 8 core 62.5/125 if you have any 62.5 fibre you will most likely be out of luck and need changing/new runs. We went to 10 gig back in 2006 and had to have all new fibre runs. Advantage was that we could continue to run the 1gig backbone and swap each switch over 1 and a time to 10gb. Hopefully if you have the skills you can save yourself a lot of money when you get projects like this and spend the extra on the hardware. We pay around £1200 for a 48 port gigabit switch with 4 x 10GB uplink ports. (D-LINK) The 4 uplink ports are separate, not combo ports, so you get the full 48 ports for clients.

With recent changes here they wanted to strip out another ICT suite, we lost one years ago when was converted to a normal teaching room. I came back after leave to find the cables cut and computers removed! I was against the decision for the second room to be removed, but then having had a meeting with someone else they told me if we could make another IT room it would help due to the computer use increase required so good job we didn't. We are a secondary school though.

Still using LTO6 tape backups on-site, all encrypted, FULL backup every night for data files. One set of tapes is stored off-site in the event of catastrophic event. 2 servers rooms at different parts of the building so can replicate between them. Quickest way for backup/restore of data rather than relying on internet line. all VMs are backed up using Windows Server Backup and a script runs to keep the last 3 days worth of images.

Crickey that would be an expensive job for us on a 10gb backbone. We've had fibre runs outside for 13 years and still run error free. Would need to be some serious harsh environments to cause any issues although one did get chauffeured on a catenary wire once and eventually split due to high winds.

Interesting, we were having the same issue but the every other page which didn't print was printing a printer error page with some PCL error I think or something of those words and capita thought it was a printer driver issue as they couldn't replicate the fault after having a copy of our database.

We've always had Fujitsu laptops for the last 10 years, no major problems apart from the normal, kids picking off keys, smashed screens , batteries needing replacing. Had an odd few which refused to power on but were under warranty within the 3 years, some still going strong now from 2009. As for servers, always had HP, still got some Ml350 G5s in service and out of warranty , with HDDs getting on for 7 years old and reporting no errors. inherited a Dell server which has had excessive drive failures, and first year of my job we had some Dell laptops which were a disaster as even Dell's own engineers couldn't get them to connect to our wireless back then, and blamed one of their network cards that's wasn't compatible so we had to be sent some different ones to test with and pay the cost to replace all!

I've never known fibre to degrade or be intermittent. Only issues we've ever had with fibre is contractors breaking the cable or rodents biting through it because the original cable was never armoured. Just run some constant ping tests between the switches at each end of the link, if any timeouts appear or the switch logs are reporting link up/link down errors then that can most likely either be bad fibre or fibre module issues.

Hi I have a fully working NPS server which is working logging to a local text file. However, for long term storage I'm looking to also store the data into a SQL database table so can carry out easier searches. However, I've found several guides online, SQL scripts etc to create the tables etc but none seem to be working successfully. I've had it create the table fields but not inserting any data. Has anyone set this up or got a working step by step to help me please. Thanks.

Hi I've deployed Office 2016 on windows 10 on some computers for testing. I've managed to add local network drives as exclusion from protected view, so they can be opened rather than it saying the file is corrupt and unreadable (which of course isn't true). However, when users open office attachments from OWA webmail it is blocking those. I have an internal exchange server and I have added the url without the https:// to the trusted locations but when trying to open the attachments it says they are corrupt and unreadable still. Please could I have some advise on what GPO settings are required to allow attachments to open from OWA in office. Thanks.

Exchange is always interesting! I've done several exchange migrations including Cross Forest with Layer 3 networking with different IP subnets from 2 exchange systems to a single one, plus migrations between the versions. I'm always very careful with lots of preparation and not changing too much at once.

Looks good but looking for something than can pull timetables from SIMS so only shows available rooms/periods to be booked.

Always a clean start here for both servers and workstations. Clears out all the rubbish and can start clean, then migrate settings etc across. usually i'm doing an Exchange, IIS or other migration at same time anyway so always good to start clean. Always have a spare physical server on-line if needed to temporarily migrate. I have done a p2v in the past for web server before crashing physical server for OS install of new version.

We run a PC with Aten Video Splitters - 8 Port sender connected to the PC cat5e cables to each location with a PC monitor on the end. receiver units can be daisy chained.

never had this issue with our servers, all are HP. When a loopback is detected the switch is intelligent enough to disable the 2 looped ports and send a syslog email to me to notify switch location giving a rough idea where the loop is to go and sort before it attempts to re-make the connection. When it does this, if the loop is still present it will disable it again for that duration and keep trying to release the ports until it has been sorted.

How much RAM is on your server and workstations? If you are using FULL SQL you need to check that the memory settings are configured correctly. You may have a server with 12 GB of ram but sql only set to use SOME of it. I've seen this before where it's been set to 2.5gb Our entire SQL DB is working from RAM all the time for quick access. (10GB)

My advice, move away from RM! Create a bespoke network, buy all the kit and install yourself if you have the knowledge. It's a huge cost saving when you want to upgrade servers etc. If you are running the network you need to know how everything works inside out, so in the event of an issue you don't say to the head, sorry it's an external issue which I cannot sort. Uptime is key! We've had a full in-house network for over 13 years and it just works!

We've got a Hikvision System here and the quality is excellent. Several NVRs round the site, pretty much plug and play with built in POE ports on the NVR. Simple to expand, and with several NVRs located round the site, cameras record direct to them so doesn't use your network bandwidth. The only time is does is when using the software of which you add in all the NVRs and view/playback footage centrally.

Vericool sent us the firmware free of charge for one of our note loaders. Just had to purchase a cable to be able to plug usb stick straight into the mini usb port. however the second one was older so we either had to pay around £350 for an engineer to come to site to upgrade it, or pay £65.00 to send to them to upgrade so we chose that option.

Hi Apologies if this has been asked before, please point me to some threads. Does any know of or use a free product that can pull data from SIMS into a system where staff can book available IT rooms? Also, looking for reports on computer usage. I currently track logins using a logon script and text files but looking for percentage use over period of time if possible, so which ones aren't used as much as others. I notice some universities have a website which shows computer use in rooms which is quite good, but probably a bit more advanced than what I am looking for. Date modified on files and McAfee advise me of any workstations that have not been switched on in weeks, but looking for something more granular. Thanks

It's a caching issue if you still cannot get on as our Finance department use an RDP session and couldn't remote on due to the certificate being revoked. Clearing IE didn't work, we just had to wait for the cache to auto clear and they are back in. Dear All, Due to an error made by GlobalSign, the leading international supplier of Secure Website Certificates, several websites have issues with users connecting, these include The Financial Times, Wikipedia and unfortunately some PS Financials Cloud Users. GlobalSign have now corrected their error and connection should continue as usual, however if connection was made during the time this issue existed your Cache may continue to stop the connection being made. Currently the only work around we have whilst we wait for the Cache to be cleared is to try to connect from a different machine. One of the staff did actually ask me that question, but of course the response was yes we do as it is renewed every year.

We were getting Flash 20 was blocked but could use the run this time for it to work. Deployed MSI for flash 23 and everything still working here.

Personal (BYOD) devices here all use the same policy as if they were using a PC, so if they can access on a PC they can access on their own device.
