Your switch won't be able to give your laptop/pc an IP address as 169. is a local address. You would need to give your computer a static IP address to be able to find it but not sure what IP/subnet you would need to give it for your setup.

If I remember correctly, this is a setting within the 'GROUP's - we have our student groups to print straight away without a popup box, but staff have the selection box when have multiple accounts. Therefore, for the staff with only 1 account you would need to put them in a new group and select to automatically charge to single shared account?

Same, every time I upgrade server OS it is ALWAYS a clean install and migrate services over. If I were to be doing this I would add a 2016 server as an additional domain controller, check DNS etc syncing, then point 1 PC to it to check all DNS etc is working before adding to the DHCP DNS list. Backups, Planning etc are all part of every major change.

HP Support is the best thing since sliced bread!!! When I ring up to replace a failed SAS Server drive they say, please can you run the diagnostics and provide me with the file in case it's an array issue and not the drive. Best one ever was when had a Digital camera that the battery was faulty and didn't charge- they told me I needed to insert the battery into the camera, switch it and go into the camera menu to do a reset. I don't think they understood that I couldn't because the battery was dead!!

For HP, once connected correctly with hyperterminal and on the prompt, try the following: Type “menu”, hit Enter Select “Switch Configuration” Select “IP Configuration” Navigate to Edit, hit Enter Change the IP and then Save

Shouldn't matter either way, with hyperterminal you don't need to know the existing IP - hyperterminal is a direct console connection so you can login to the switch without knowing it's IP> Once logged in a command should let you view the info. On D-Link is is show switch that lists it's IP but HP will be different I imagine.

Try HyperTerminal but you may need to find the docs for HP kit as you may need to change baud rates etc in the settings. As long as you know the login details you will be able to login to the switch and then find the IP address. I would do it the same way, serial connection to a usb2serial adapter to a laptop. Usually switches come with a static default IP if they are reset.

Does it have a serial port? With our Switches you can boot them up with serial cable attached using HyperTerminal to view the switch details.

I always thought that with any raid system it would mark the drives as only being readable in a RAID system rather than independent as a 'set' and have to import like that.

If you have a raid 1 set with 2 drives and 1 failed and the pc failed, would you be able to connect the remaining drive to ANY other hardware and get the data off it easily?

RAID is not a backup solution! I'm a photographer and despite all my images being stored on a Hardware Array, I still then backup to a single 3TB drive which is stored securely with bitlocker in case of a raid failure, as this drive can then be read in any machine.

This is a catch 22 in our school. Games are blocked, but they want to use Google Translate, so they just use that to bypass the filter in other languages.

Although the data now appears to be transferring I've noticed that not ALL fields are included. Within the server NPS logs there is both entries for Call Station identifier and Calling Station identifier. One to log the source AP and WiFi name, the other the client mac address. However, within SQL it only logs the WIFI AP MAC address, not the client. The idea would be to track a client MAc address to see where it has connected but obviously defeats the object I was looking for.

Managed to resolve this - despite the NPS server connection to SQL saying the test was successful it was to do with the SQL database. I was trying to point the NPS server to my HP SIM server which I use for all central monitoring, SYSLOG, server events etc, but seems the SQL server wouldnt accept connection from a remote system. I re-ran the NPS accounting wizard, pointed it to an SQL server I set up from scratch and it worked first time and is now recording data. The joys of IT!

one of the reasons I dont use classroom management software! Also we used Ranger Remote in the early days and even that locked machines up. It's third party software tapping into Microsoft products , so i just keep the installs simple. We use VNC since day1 and the same version still works on Windows 10 anniversary edition. It was bad enough that even McAfee had to release a new agent update just to support the difference between win 10 and the anniversary edition.

I've always found virtual servers to be slower than physicals. All production servers that clients access i.e Profiles, SIMS, Exchange, Files are all still physical servers and always will be. I have only virtualised management servers - i.e McAfee EPO, WSUS, KMS, NPS, Paxton Access, as i've always found disk performance slow on the virtual servers. All physical servers are either 2x 4 core servers, or our SIMS server which is 2 x 6 core CPUs and 24GB ram , raid 50 data array , and we've always been told of how fast our server is in comparison to other schools and when capita have to do anything remotely on the server. if your going virtual then to me, you should have a SAN and a dedicated drive set for EACH Virtual server, otherwise your trying to run all your eggs in one basket on 1 physical SAN storage array with multiple servers using disk usage. It will only take one VM to hammer your drive I/O which will make others suffer.

Sure, It's Hikvision. We upgraded and old analogue System about 2 years ago to Hikvision with domes and PTZ cameras. 2MP PTZ cameras, and 3MP and 4MP domes. Each recorder has 2 HDD for redundancy, 8 or 16 POE ports on the back for the cameras, and a single gigabit uplink port to the network. We have 10 recorders. Using the iVMS software you import all NVRs by their IP (we have them on a separate VLAN) then you can drag and drop cameras from any recorder to make custom views. the only traffic going over your network is when viewing the streams or playback/export. .

Still got some servers running 72GB RAID 1 drives for OS - unless your splitting up exchange/SQL installs for log files/databases then its more than adequate.

Or save your network bandwidth and have POE NVRs, as means the cameras are directly recording to the Box and the only traffic that goes over the network is when live viewing or playback. We have several located over the site, all brought together using the software to centrally manage. Even have POE cameras on runs over 150m with a POE extender in between that doesn't require a power source! Also means your cameras continue recording if your switch failed. Just an FYI

Nope, but I imagine they have a bit more respect for equipment! Even the thought of ipads here makes me shudder. Good job they don't agree with them here for students, although the PE staff have them for registration.

I guess it's not much of an issue in primary schools, but with secondary out laptops get keys picked off, screens smashed etc etc..

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? Does no one log NPS to SQL ,only the text files??
