  1. I delete year 11 user accounts beginning of September, just in case the school want to email them about their gcse results. Their work is stored on the server for 3 years, then any after that is archived to tape. I have the last 8 years on tape if needed, but usually if any data is requested by further colleges, it's usually within the first year.
  2. For any one else who experiences the issue, it is now solved - It is to do with a windows update and I found the article below. Uninstalling the KB returns it to normal working. kb3159706 is the culprit https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1629616-wsus-sql-issues
  3. Hi I've had a WSUS server in place for a long time providing updates to clients. I have just gone to try and connect to the console and i'm getting the following error below. I am using the WIndows Internal Database and NOT sql, so wondering if anyone knows the fix for this. As it's the internal database, how do i add permissions? The service is running. I believe it may only be since I did the last windows update batch on the server. if anyone can help before I crash and burn, please let me know. Thanks. The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server Database. Verify that SQL server is running on the WSUS Server. If the problem persists, try restarting SQL. 4. Agreed - speak with your line manager and say it holds you up when needing to carry out maintenance. Do you have access to the site out of hours in case of issues? If so, definitely should get a master key. If your job is to ensure the network is always running and is closely monitored then you may need acces 24/7 in the event of an emergency. No good waiting for a caretaker say for example your server room air con failed over the weekend.
  5. Is broadcast traffic really as much as an issue these days? Understandably maybe if your still running 100 meg links. We have 1100 devices on our domain (400 which are wireless) and never have an broadcast issues. I do have VOIP, Access Control, CCTV all on separate VLANS, but still go over the same fibre link (just VLAN'd on the switch) tagged on the uplink and never seen any performance issues from looking at traffic monitoring software.
  6. My Windows 10 deployment will be with 2016.
  7. Not sure why .local isn't recommended. Never had any issues personally over the years.
  8. Exchange 2013 - Looks like migration will be the project from September! Think i'll call it something generic instead this time....
  9. Hi So for a second time, I need to change the name of our AD domain. Initially it was a new domain to merge 2 school networks together, and this time due to change of school name. Has anyone ever done a domain rename, which has Exchange Server running also, and how did it go and or/any particular online guides you followed? Ultimately, it is just going to be easier/safer to setup another DC for the new domain and then do a migration as I did before in stages? Thanks.
  10. It can either be when accessing their own user are (home directory) or a different shared folder .i.e Staff Shared Drive. AS for permissions, the 'staff' security group have the following NTFS permissions, and on the share itself they have read and change
  11. Hi I've had an ongoing issue for a while which i cannot get to the bottom of, as it is so irregular and cannot replicate as and when needed. When a user is attaching a file from a network drive from Outlook, or a user goes to save a new document, they get the box below (I just got it myself) When the box comes up, it shows the file server UNC path, but if i go to the server by explorer \\servername it goes through instantly, and other files are still accessible. I literally tell the users to wait, whilst it has hung, and within a few minutes it seems to unfreeze and then continue as normal. Any ideas? I've tried resetting profiles, reinstalling office. However it doesnt happen every time, doesnt happen with all users at the same time, and happens on different computers. Wish i could find out whats causing it as obviously it's not a network cable or server issue!?
  12. Are you using Spanning tree or not. If not, run a wireshark capture and filter for STP that will tell you what is broadcasting. I used this to turn STP off on all my switches as do not use it.
  13. So I have just purchased the annual subscription for the photography creative cloud package - photoshop and lightroom. I was a bit surprised that they only need the card number and expiry date for purchasing, no 3 digit code. Is this a lack of Adobe Security?
  14. Hi Does anyone have manufacturer or models for cashless catering system cash loaders? In particular the Vericool one is a very compact AIO with operating system stored on CF card, USB inputs and ethernet. Does anyone know what to search for to find something similar for a project? Basically this, http://www.vericool.co.uk/images/school_catering_cash_loader.png of which the entire screen part module comes out. Thanks.
  15. Hi I have a wireless network which is authenticating users and /or computers via NPS/RADIUS authentication, all which works fine. I also have an open network which goes to our captive portal, log in and can access the internet. However, as the guest wireless network is open on it's own VLAN, the NPS server doesn't log the connections, I can only see who is logged in via the captive portal. If i make the Guest WIFI WPA enterprise authentication, so it still doesn't require a password, can I create an addtional NPS policy, so that say if the traffic is coming from VLAN 40 it will allow access automatically? If so, please could someone advise on the required policy settings. Thanks.
  16. Good Luck with that! We are becoming part of a MAT and others are on O365. I have said that I will be keeping email in-house, so that we always have communication. They only use the O365 website, not the outlook client so I won't be following in their footsteps. I think that the ICT staff and IT staff should be separate in terms of how things are run, and final decisions made by the actual IT staff employed to do their job!
  17. Hi, I have user photos added to AD for use in Outlook. In outlook 2010 the full image shows portrait. However, in Outlook 2013 it appears the image box is now square, causing top and bottom of the photos to be cropped. What is the solution for this, so that the entire image can be seen in Outlook 2013. As it is mixed versions in use, I do not intend on re-cropping all photos square! Please could anyone advise if this can be changed. thanks.
  18. Hello Does anyone else who has Eclipse.net installed on their local network have port 6001 open on their firewall? We've only just recently been having some issues with eclipse, having been running it now for 5+ years, and I have been advised that I need to open Port 6001 for teh Groupcall Xport job to run successfully as it is failing. Does everyone else who has eclipse have this port open, or is it something they have recently changed, as I have been advised that apparently it is on their set filter/firewall exceptions list, but we have never had it in place. Just want this confirming if possible. Thanks.
  19. I used to purchase them from my main suppliers, but now i use cpc.co.uk whenever order anything from then Varied lengths from 1m to 3m and never had any issues.

  22. Any other VMs running through the same Virtual Network Adapter, and are they working OK? Remove the adapter and re-add so it installs new drivers and re-assign IP info etc. Event logs??
  23. net 2 ACUs can run 1km over the RS485 link...we've got a camera and Net2 going on some new gates over 100m.. For the Net2 we are using the Rs485 link of a Net2 Plus on the network, and for the camera using a POE repeater to boost the signal an extra 100m joining it at approx 40 metres from the NVR.
  24. it's just a link so can be on any network - whatever its plugged into at the source just make it a member of the same VLAN etc..
  25. Second heads up for Ubiquiti - Never used but would love to test out the range on those as apparently are good!
