  1. Just wondered if anyone within Lincolnshire use capital bytes for their web and email filtering, and how do you find it especially with BYOD? I've found out that our current provider are using an older version of Netsweeper and that v4 is coming out soon which is improved vastly. Just discovered recently that students can bypass filtering by using google translate but they cannot on the newer version. Was looking at censornet, but wondered how the new netsweeper is in comparison.
  2. i'd love to know how to stop the students doing this to the login screen if anyone can help as the shortcuts don't work to take it back to normal, as I've disabled stuff in GPO.
  3. We let staff use SIMS.net off-site through RemoteApp - works a treat. We just had to pay for MS CALS for our total FTE count of staff.
  4. probably a simple answer to this one but here goes... server 1 was - was on exchange 2010 server 2 - temporary exchange 2013 server for migration. Migrated all users to server 2 - no issues. re-built sever 1 with exchange 2013 and moved mailboxes back - all OK then uninstalled exchange 2013 on server 2 (temporary server) and none of the outlook clients would connect - just hung on 'loading profile' before timing out. OWA working fine, and if you removed the mail profile in control panel and re-ran outlook it found the user and created a new profile so autodiscover working. reinstalled exchange CAS role only on server 2 and outlook started working again. Did I miss moving something back to server 1? I thought exchange 2013 was easier to remove a server as not using public folders, system mailboxes were moved to server 1. Any help appreciated so I can finally decommission the temp server. Thanks.
  5. We just use the cheapo testers for checking connections (rj45) no fibre testing kit as all done by external contractors. as long as get all lights and a 1 gig connection i'm happy Would love to do a fibre course, but it's expensive business and for what little new runs we do it's not worth it.
  6. It would be good to know how they are completely disabled - no matter what I do, they still manage to set the login screen so that it's black and typing invisible text...then when you try to use the commands to undo it, they don't work so results in a re-image of the PC!
  7. Then again you cannot trust contractors! We went to take a projector down to change the bulb and the ceiling mount literally fell out the ceiling in our hands, couldn't believe it. Just a good job no students were there otherwise that could have been serious. It was a small lightweight cab 2U with patch panel and switch, had been there 10 years before it gave up the ghost! We used to hang off the projector poles to check secure!
  8. One reason why I don't install data cabinets myself (or ceiling mount projectors) - always get the contractors to fit when installing fibre. We did have an incident earlier this year where one came out of a plasterboard wall (mobile building) and ripped out the fibre module.

  10. lol both our server rooms are contained and what if it happened over the weekend?!
  11. We still use our .lincs.sch.uk domain but I know of other schools that have gone to a .co.uk Even if you move away from the local authority, you can take your .lincs.sch.uk and move it to say 123 reg as it's a domain, not subdomain.
  12. Just wondered what people use if anything to monitor anything other than Temperature in their server room, i.e Water? We've had a few occasions over the years where the air con has failed due to blocked drainage or other fault resulting in a flooded floor, only to be found when going in the server room. Anyone come across anything other than the ServersCheck hardware? Use server / ups software for temperature monitoring and alerting in the event of air con failure for temperature rise.
  13. I developed an in house SQL/ASP intranet several years ago. It served several purposes 1. Was our behaviour system as SIMS wasn't good enough for what they wanted. it recorded positive/negative behaviour and then at the end of each term students with least negative comments received a reward. 2. Library system - Developed in house using VB the library system had 2 sides - staff had VB software for managing the library, and from students side they could view books they had taken out, when due back and leave reviews for other students and also to know when books that were already out on loan would be returned. Only think it's used for now is a basic on-call web page where if s teacher needs support they can click the button and sends an email for help in their classroom if students mis-behave. Died a few years back when we merged schools.
  14. Thanks, that solved the booking error. However when I login, I still get a "not found" message box pop up but nothing to say what it is looking for...
  15. Hi Currently running Home access plus on server 2008 R2 and all working well. Have installed fresh copy of 2012 R2 and HAP , all installed with the settings etc. However, 2 things: 1. When I login as a user it comes up with an error "not found" messagebox and could not find file \app_data\bookings.xml If I create the file manually the error changes to "Root Element is missing" What have I missed? 2. Secondly, on the current install I disabled photos showing that are stored in AD. I cannot remember which file/code I modified to disable the photos. I tried copying over the files but it didn't like that and screwed up the whole new install. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.
  16. We buy Z-Power replacements from www.suppliesforschools.co.uk for batteries that no longer hold their charge. Don't know how prices compare, but are of higher capacity than the OEM ones and never had any issues.
  17. Quite interesting though as until you get to tech level 3 no server side is involved which is what I stated here that it is beyond their job description as an IT Technician. Documentation is long winded but definitely worth it. It's taken me several years to put together, and it's one of those things when I get 5 minutes I update it a little bit more. Even as NM, it comes in useful at times when there's something you don't do very often. Still writing it to this day. Started from scratch but there are some sample handover document templates online, although I haven't found them in depth. Just as and when I do something on the network I check to make sure that item appears in the docs somewhere.
  18. I believe it was for the old Pro Desktop V8.0, not the creo version.
  19. pro Desktop is now apparently Free as EOL?
  20. We used to get the problem quite often with our normal IP printers. Some times it was simply because no printer was set as default. once that was done and re-loaded the program it was fine.
  21. Data Protection Issues?
  22. Got a letter and email yesterday!
  23. Part of the issue is they don't understand IT - SSDs went straight over their head, but as soon as you say it cuts down login times from 5 minutes to 1 and a half they go ooo that's good!
  24. I haven't left! (Yet) It just came up in a meeting I had this afternoon!
  25. Totally agree! Got what I wanted to hear in writing from someone else!!
