Not totally true - Within SQL Management studio you can configure the maximum amount of RAM to use for SQL. Our server has 24GB, DB is 11GB so I set it to use no more than 16GB RAM so the entire database can be stored in RAM.

That doesn't sound good at all for searches. Have you monitored system resources whilst it's running? CPU, RAM, Disk usage etc.

I've just ran a report on an old county proxy filter to ensure nothing is still using it on our network, as we now have an on-site proxy server. What specifically is slow? From the built in reports, run the report for 'data collection sheets' for the whole school on role and see how long it takes.

Capita has a minimum system requirements document on the myaccount support site, but we've always overspec'd so it lasts. We've been running SIMS on a Dual CPU 6 core server with 16GB ram since 2014. It also runs Discover and utilities that export from SIMS into others such as Samlearning etc. Also run a couple of other admin programs. SIMS is heavily used in secondary school installed on 70+ PCs.

Your need it on a Physical server and local storage. Tests reveal on 1gb SAN links you get disk performance of a single hard drive 70-80MB/s - on local storage we get 300MB/s + on RAID 10.

As always, overspec a server above the requirements. We have and always will run sims on a physical server . The key for sims speed I make sure it's local storage. If your running the vm disk on 1gb SAN you will have poor disk performance. This was discovered when we were told our Sims is faster than another schools. Our report for data collection on 900 students runs in 4 minutes maximum. On another schools running is as virtual on 1gb San it takes over 30 minutes so physical is the way to go.

I do have another domain with 123reg and all our DNS records for that one are on the same account, so hoping I can do this with another provider for the sch.uk domain, as 123 reg don't support these.

Must be a common fault - we binned one of these a while ago due to the same issue. Took it all apart then decided to scrap as out of warranty and looked ancient along with being a bit of a beast

Hi Our current .sch.uk domain name is managed by our local LEA. Has anyone been able to gain control of their domain and move it to another provider? I've tried 123reg but they said that they don't support the transfer of .sch.uk domains. I want to move it so that I can have control over the DNS entries. Any advice or names of registrars which support this would be useful. thanks.

If your just pulling the network cable - perhaps a safer option is to stop the transport service or mailbox store? I'd never just pull the network cable. At least if it's still connected to the network the server will still be able to update with the domain etc.

So glad I don't use any of these products. Unless they work with Microsoft for testing, you cannot let 3rd party software inject into Microsoft products without there being issues. We ran Ranger Remote in the very early days and that was enough to put me off.

If something isn't working I can't just leave it. If there's a fault it's to be fixed not just left.. it's my job to have a realiable system which is always available. Obviously if I'm out the county or country I would say I'll look at it on my return but otherwise I would go in to fix it or just remote in to resolve.

If there are issues that occur and I get notifications of any issues it's part of the job to sort it asap. Users rely on systems and they need to be up and running. Most can be done remotely anyway unless a physical failure. If your off for 2 weeks system went down during exam results would you just leave it then until you returned then??!

I always used to just use Local logins on all switches set up the same. However over the years I decided to implement RADIUS switch authentication for logging in as it meant I could easily assign AD credentials to the logins for different levels of access - Admin, View Only, etc. I have it set so authentication order is RADIUS then local, so if for any reason the RADIUS is unavailable I would still be able to login with at least the local login.

With on-site exchange you can set mailflow rules to start and stop at specific times, but not sure that you can set it for daily, weekly etc. However, why you would want to implement this seems silly. Staff may need to send out urgent/important messages and its up to staff if they access out of school hours. It's a choice, not a requirement. Even as IT staff when we are on leave, staff still email us expecting help. I couldn't leave it for 2 weeks before replying!

we have several banks of laptops which are used as class sets (30 at a time) We very rarely having any issues logging on to the domain or the wireless not starting up. For laptops we use a mandatory profile so the size is minimal, but then use their full profile for desktops. If it's all configured and you have a managed wireless with load balancing it should all work perfectly.

Unfortunately I wasn't involved with the whole process and they went with the pin option. They didn't want to use AD as will take a while for them to enter, and there would have been additional cost to get the card readers added.

No I've only ever done file level backups from another server to this one.

What advantages are there over having the box set up as an iscsi target opposed to it just being a box sitting on the network accessed via unc path?

So I ran a disk space tool and turns out that even though it wasn't registering from the folder properties, the tool picked up that the missing space was in fact in the system volume information folder. I'll just re-format the disk to clear it all out, but anyone know why this has occurred?

I'm a pro photographer aswell as working in IT. I would definitely recommend inkjets for photography prints specifically cannon or Epson. Even with Laser printers that I've tested with (and at home), you just don't get the same photographic quality prints from them, and I still have an inkjet for when I want to print photos.

I've intermittently had issues with ITV - the outside aerial is directly joined in the loft to the only TV point in the living room. When I first do a channel scan ITV glitches in and out blocky and the sound scratchy, but after a few days its absolutely fine with no problems, until next time I re-tune it will play up for a while before it settles down again.
