  1. Did connections start dropping as soon as you swapped in the Juniper box? Is local routing happening on the Juniper box or your main switch/switch stack?
  2. Is this on the local LAN or are there firewalls between your SSH client and the server? You can fudge it by using something like Host * ServerAliveInterval 60 to your ~/.ssh/config if there's a firewall in-between, but as the above poster says - a bit more info is needed. When did it start happening? What's changed on the server/client and anything in-between?
  3. The SBM is the DPO and they're leading it. With nudging (that occasionally goes into nagging) and input from me (NM).
  4. It's allowed for our sixth form at the request of Careers & PD lessons. Shenanigans have been minimal (I don't think there have been any).
  5. Have you checked IIS hasn't bound to the old IP and you need to manually point it to the new one?
  6. Redirect large jobs with notification (requires PaperCut client installed on the computer sending the job, but trivial to deploy) to a more economical printer. Requires all printers to be talking the same language (postscript > postscript or PCL > PCL) in order to work. We're set up so everyone has just 1-2 printers: the printer in the room (if there is one) and a virtual queue that can be released on the copiers with a job retention of 72hrs.
  7. I'd echo the Powershot and IXUS recommendations. The tiny (cigarette packet) cheap Nikons with image stabilisation are pretty reliable too - even our least artistic staff can get decent results. The Sony DSCRX100m1 is a lovely camera but at ~£300 I suspect it's too pricey.
  8. We've been using Final Cut Pro here for years. The learning curve is pretty shallow but there's sufficient depth to get decent results and the local uni (where a lot of our film/media students go) also uses it. I use it for editing IT instructional videos, GoPro footage etc and picked it up within an hour or so, though there's a couple of obscure things (mainly lining up clips and avoiding audio "pop") that I had to ask out media dept about. My last experience of Premiere was in the early 00's though, so I'm not sure how the two compare.
  9. ^ I've got Check_MK bolted into Icinga here, but hadn't spotted the scheduled task functionality. That looks like (based on how few tasks are in the screenshot per server) you can filter for specific tasks you care about, or it is pulling all user-created tasks?
  10. My concern would be key escrow for the encryption. If (for example), the head gets hit by a bus or gets sacked, can the replacement (or whoever the governing body instructs) access data held on the device? I'd be happier with the request if there were N+1 macs to justify the effort in managing multiple devices. A one-off special is kinda asking for bad things to happen due to neglect/lack of experience supporting them. For managing applications, look at Munki.
  11. Have you changed your proxy configuration so that the domains/urls that the A2C program needs to connect to are set to "authentication not required" and "whitelisted/allowed"? We had to add (this'll vary for you): a2c.cambridgeassessment.org.uk a2c.pearson.com/A2CEbXmlService/ a2c.wjec.co.uk a2c.aqa.org.uk a2c.ccea.org.uk a2cssl.cityandguilds.com
  12. The email we got stated: I read that as "you don't need to", and a quick poke around shows me stuff that would normally be behind the paywall (I think).
  13. ^ Registration is optional IIRC - article access is controlled by the source IP.
  14. i5 and SSD if it's actually going to be doing heavy lifting. i3 and SSD otherwise. Even in AutoCad, Photoshop and Solidworks, the kids don't create things complex enough to tax the systems.
  15. When I opened the ticket ("Is there a way to bulk delete kids over 25yrs old?"), the Capita helldesk person did the standard "Yes you do, SIMS doesn't have that functionality but you can vote on this handy CR" and that was the one they linked to. I think ( @PhilNeal ?) they do look over similar CR and consolidate votes when deciding what to work on.
  16. Anyone mind voting for this CR? https://myaccount.capita-cs.co.uk/changerequests/ChangeRequest/ff43fc49-248f-e311-a450-005056b41d39 It's the "We'd like to delete leaver records that we shouldn't* be keeping, but SIMS only lets you do one at a time and the admin staff are chasing us with sticks whenever we mention it" change request. *25yrs old in our case.
  17. Lockout tag for something? Metal bit goes in somewhere and prevents something operating, blue bit is to put it in place without getting fingers near the mangly bits? Can we see a side and end profile? What job does the owner do?
  18. DCs are usually 2-4GB here. They start on 4GB and then we check what they're using after a month and reduce if appropriate.
  19. Assuming the child's old enough to be helpful, we usually discuss with the student what works best for them and then pick something to suit. Often that's a portable device with dyslexic fonts and an automatically launched coloured filter program. The main thing to remember is that something that works for person A may be useless for person B. When we had six volunteer dyslexic kids testing various bits and bobs, there wasn't anything that worked well for all of them.
  20. @Mark182 we claimed on the insurance when we lost a lot of switches (lightning strike).
  21. Because they can't say they're doing everything they can to protect pupil data if they're quibbling over £35 to secure the transmission of said data. This is one of those occasions where it's your job as IT to protect management from themselves.
  22. @southhamster Have you heard from KM on any progress? It's all gone silent on their end here. I submitted the C3350 and C284e to the "Still needs SMB1" email address and got a response, but MS need a published KB article or customer documentation from KM that describes the affected models before they can publish. I can't find anything on their websites.
  23. Left the tab too long - that was for Geoff.
  24. ^ Exactly. Sometimes it's cheaper to call Sergei.
  25. Where (country) are the servers physically? That'll greatly influence whether escalating to a "you need to hand over the data and here's the legal reasons why" letter from a solicitor is worthwhile.
