  1. And the answer is......wait an hour and then it'll actually start taking effect. It'll mark the sync client with a "X" and fill the sync log with "an item couldn't be uploaded to" for each blocked item, but it doesn't make it clear that's due to an organisation-wide restriction. It's worth noting that the Web UI for OneDrive completely ignores these restrictions. So while it'll prevent ~1000 users with 1TB of OneDrive storage apiece automatically filling our onsite storage, it won't prevent potentially malicious file types being uploaded to OneDrive via the web client.
  2. ^ While you're in a documentation mood @PhilNeal, I'd love a "So, you've been running SIMS since 1993* and have no end of gunk in your SIMS share that you're 99% sure you don't need, but....." guide. *yes really, there's dbase stuff lurking in there.
  3. Has anyone got this working? I can't decide if it's not working properly yet or if it's another "wait 12 hrs for your changes to percolate through our systems" affair. So far, after waiting ~20 minutes, my file restrictions for syncing (bat, cmd, iso for testing) are being ignored.
  4. What software are you using to manage the print queue? Does it have it's own drivers for translation between different manufacturers?
  5. Yes - Vonage example: https://www.vonage.co.uk/useful-info/how-vonage-works/keep-existing-phone-number/
  6. Printout + autogenerated password for each kid. We do inset/induction at the start of the year with ~30 kids at a time. If you're a mid-year joiner (and you come to collect your credentials), you get the short version of the induction. If we send the credentials via the form teacher, it's in a sealed envelope.
  7. We don't (for drama, pr0n and malware reduction reasons) but if there's something they desperately need they can use a workstation in the IT office to grab it. We provide school email, OneDrive and a VLE, all of which are more than capable of transferring files in various sizes.
  8. Bit of a long-shot, but .....we've just replaced our franking machine and the older one is pending recycling. It works as of 21-02-17 when we transferred the remaining credit and decommissioned it, however we're keeping the scales to use on the new machine, so they're not available. If anyone's interested in the feeder / outfeed tray / parts or the machine itself, let me know. It'll be around for a couple of weeks or so.
  9. Cheers, /r/avast is blowing up with WTF? threads. Apparently, definition 170222-0 fixes it, but I haven't verified that yet: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=197572.0
  10. Is anyone else seeing Avast Business with todays (22-02-17) updates on Windows 10 1607 having counters.dat from: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\counters.dat getting quarantined as generic VB malware (VBS:Malware-gen) I'm leaning towards a false positive from what I'm seeing and VirusTotal.com giving the allegedly infected files it a clean bill of health. but..... Google's a bit sparse about it, though there's a couple of similar posts in the last 24hrs.
  11. Of late, we've been using USFF HP 8000/8200 series with a new SSD as we had a load after refreshing hardware.
  12. Go to the powershell subreddit and work through the tutorials in the sidebar.
  13. Escalate and ask for a breakdown of which modules require access to which folder trees. They must have that information. From there you can restrict folders based on people's group membership in SIMS. We've been running granular permissions on S for years without ill effect, it's not hard.
  14. Sling a "-d3" (debug level 3) into the command: smbclient -d3 -U guest -L qegs-facility to get more info about what's happening.

    SIMS crashing

Is pulsar.exe showing as waiting on another process when you analyze the wait chain? (Right-click the process in taskmanager in Win 10. In Win 7 launch resource monitor and then do the same).

    SIMS crashing

What changed on Wednesday / Thursday? Solus patch? Windows patch? SIMS administrator changing something? Errors in the SQL log? Event logs? Antivirus definition/update causing daft things to happen or a part of SIMS to be quarantined? What error(s) is it throwing up when it crashes? Generic .Net, generic SIMS permissions error, another code? Have you poked Capita / whoever provides your 3rd-party SIMS support?
  17. - What's the CPU usage like on the switches? Low-end Netgears do have a lot of features you can turn on, but they rarely have the horsepower to have everything turned on. - Can you feed SNMP data from them into something like Cacti or Observium so you've an idea of activity over time? Having utilisation and errors logged elsewhere means they'll survive a reboot. Oh, and +1 on stop daisy-chaining them. While it may not solve the current problem, it'll speed everything else up and make it easier to chop out switches when determining the culprit.
  18. What (if anything) are you using to centralise / report on / control scheduled tasks at your organisation? For Windows I've found......System Center Orchestrator, maybe Puppet/Ansible/Salt and a few abandoned bits and bobs. I can report on remote tasks using schtasks and/or Powershell. But what I'd like is one server dishing out tasks so if we need to amend something it's all in one place.
  19. https://ola.hallengren.com/ TLDR: If you're having to herd SQL Express instances due to terrible curriculum software, these may be useful. If you're using full SQL, they still might be useful as a supplement to maintenance plans.
  20. So, who's expecting a lot more terrible games on Steam as a result? $100 > $5000 isn't much of a speedbump.
  21. ^ Try something like this in /etc/cron.daily/letsencryptrenewal* #!/bin/sh #Set the proxy variables export http_proxy=http://server:port export https_proxy=http://server:port # Check the cert and renew if applicable /opt/letsencrypt/certbot-auto renew Then check the logfiles in /var/log/letsencrypt/ after a day or so. *or whatever you want to call it.
  22. Are the people affected usually based in one room or are they roamers who move classroom nearly every lesson? Or a mix of both?
  23. Are you asking if marketing would use Fear Uncertainty and Doubt in a bid to make sales? Like most government guidance it's: 1) How you define "monitoring system" is down to the individual school and whether they can back up their decisions with sound reasoning. 2) Using technology is one way of ticking a KCSIE box because it doesn't rely on a human who has N+1 other things to do too. Page 17, Section 67 of KCSIE states: Annex C (relevant info on page 62) essentially repeats the above using more words without really clarifying what they mean: We (for example) use a combination of automated monitoring at the client (on-screen content) and also automated reports from the web filter. The two combined give us decent coverage, relying on just one we'd miss things.
  24. I think you're confusing "Git" (the source control tool - https://git-scm.com/) with "Github" - a place where people make their git source repositories available to others, usually publicly unless they're paying. My git repository sits on an inhouse server and is only accessible via SSH. If I migrated to GitLab (gitlab.com), I'd be using their Community Edition which you install on your own server and provides a web interface to the git repo, again secured by HTTPS and AD authentication. My scripts don't have any sensitive data in them - any authentication is done machine-to-machine using kerberos, SSL certificates, public key auth or some other shared secret.
  25. I use a git repo for the scripts I write. I keep meaning to migrate them to Gitlab* community edition (or similar) to make it easier for others to check in their stuff. *the self-hosted, only got myself to blame if I delete the wrong DB version.
