Anyone using u2f security keys to secure G Suite
pete replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Cloud Services
^ I think @limawhiskey and I were treating the phone as the second factor to a laptop/desktop/whatever. Instead of being used itself to directly access Google accounts. Based on your "we don't allow personal devices" assertion. Plus, people are more likely to notice (and report, or at least whine about) losing a phone. -

^ You don't need a network connection for Google authenticator to work. It's the same as an RSA fob in that respect. -
Aeropress here with one of those add-in metal filters. Oh, and a fancy espresso machine that rarely gets used since getting the aeropress unless it's a Sunday and I want a lazy prolonged breakfast.

- Student AUP - Staff AUP (=Student with a few things tagged on) - BYOD AUP (for pupils, which underlines that a) The school isn't responsible for your device b) While onsite or accessing school network/resources, your actions will be judged to the same standard as if your were using school hardware c) Use in class is at the teacher's discretion.) Social media is already covered under the AUPs. We don't differentiate between "Internet" and "Cloud" in terms of parental permissions - your kid's either allowed by you to use the Internet or isn't. There are other policies, but they're more about how the school (as an entity) does things surrounding IT.

Hmm, a cheap-fitted low-sec rifter/merlin* using named modules is doable, but really benefits from max fitting skills which aren't available as an Alpha. *or whatever's the current flavour-of-the-month on SHC.
-
^ So T1 Cruisers and below? I assume you can fit T2 modules?
-
^ So if you've an old-school account, can you resurrect it under the free-to-play inititative and what restrictions apply?

Spotted on the PFE blog: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2016/11/07/two-unusual-azure-ad-connect-configuration-issues/ Gist is that if you're upgrading from dirsync > Azure AD and your dirsync account is old enough, the upgrade may not complete because your dirsync account is missing out-of-band contact info (phone and email). The fix is to log into Office 365 as the dirsync account and provide the information.

Make it clear in any plan of works that doing so will result in the invoice being unpaid until they do it properly. As in "All phone points should connect directly back to $whereever. School policy forbids the use of unmanaged switches." If they ignore that, cancel the contract/work - they failed to follow client instructions.

We recently moved from a dedicated PM registration slot to registering in Period 05. This is fine if you're years 7 > 11, but year 12 & 13 students have free periods. The current workaround is.....lacking and so we're investigating other options. We've just had a meeting with a salesperson from Biostore (we already use bits of their software for other things) to talk about IDRegister for PM registration, possibly using IDPoints (small wall-mount PoE grey boxes with fingerprint reader and keypad). If you have them, what are they like to administer/use? Specifically: How often do they fail to work? How do the kids get on with them? Roughly what's the throughput like at busy periods? As network devices do they place nicely or do silly things? How much of your (IT) time do they consume? How easy is it to apply an alternate fire register timetable for a specific group (Y11 students coming in for revision sessions)? What does whoever manages attendance think about them?

I'm also nagging them about Azure AD integration.

We've been using it for just over a year now. We did it initially as a "try it for a year, renew if it's useful, gets used and we can see student improvement". In terms of setup it's mostly fire-and-forget. Configure Groupcall, set proxy exceptions (if necessary), tag the correct exam boards in GCSEPod. We've noticed an improvement in GCSE revision and results, especially among our SEN/Learning Support students who're using it a lot, and the student in general have responded positively. As has been mentioned, you do need SLT and HODs to push it. For us it passed the "useful enough to pay for another year" threshold. YMMV of course.

Here's what we have (individual PDF scans, includes debug cheatsheet too): SMOCopier16110913270.pdf SMOCopier16110913260.pdf SMOCopier16110913250.pdf SMOCopier16110913240.pdf SMOCopier16110913230.pdf

Did you get a chance to see what the model was?

^ There's a lot of flawed functionality in SIMS (off the top of my head - 1) lack of audit trails and 2) including personal data (DOB) in class lists by default, with no option to change that default school-wide). Experience shows that unless enough people moan about it, it doesn't get fixed. And even then it might not.

Which SSL certificate company should I go for?
pete replied to Dan_ATR's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
What did you use to automate the renewal for IIS? We have Let's Encrypt on the Linux boxes, but the solutions I found for Windows (admittedly a while ago) looked a bit ropey. -

We used Namecheap (Multi-domain Positive SSL) for our RDP Gateway. £24/yr with 3 names included. Extra names we're ~£10 each. It's using Comodo as the cert issuer. -
This is what I'm current working with. The hall is also used for PE (ball games), so anything that can't be protected from that isn't an option. The stage has thick heavy curtains that are closed when things start to be flung about. TVs staggered down the hall have been vetoed from a cost, damage & aesthetics POV.

The powers that be are dissatisfied with our current (wide-angle short-throw + motorised screen in a shadow box formed by the school stage) projection setup in the main hall. It's admittedly getting on a bit and was a compromise due to the terrible layout of the hall (lots of light, very few places to fit a projector and screen). I'm pondering rear projection instead because of the limited ability to fix screens anywhere but inside the stage. Using rear projection would bring the screen forward by about ~20 foot and (in theory) it should be brighter. The current screen is ~12 foot wide and the new screen will need to be of a similar size. So what're you using? I've spotted a few threads about rear projection over the years (including a recommendation to look at Harkness Screens, but I haven't found a "we did X and it was good/bad/daft" follow-up.

Anyone mind posting their average latency to the Azure CDN?
pete replied to pete's topic in Cloud Services
Cheers All @Steve21 Yeah, I'm testing without the SW and the CDN still has high latency using the link above. Interestingly, the cloudharmony test (https://cloudharmony.com/speedtest-for-azure NB: takes ~43 minutes to run, hence why I didn't ask you guys to use it) shows the Verizon-hosted CDN has less latency.
