Eligibility's a bit unclear. How do I prove an absence (or presence) of VMware? Screenshots? I've got a couple of VMware workloads I've been pondering moving to Hyper-V. Time to bug the sales guys (I suspect I'll get a "We don't know, Microsoft never tell us nuffin. Give me a couple of days to poke Microsoft").

^ You can also set redirected Start Menu's / Desktops as administratively assigned offline files (user config > adm templates > Network > Offline files > specify administratively assigned offline files). We leave the "make available offline" option available for staff because it's handy (and no-one's got stupidly big homedirs).

Do you mind letting on how much is that costing you, for how much data and how frequently are you pushing data up? Are you using that as primary backup or a secondary store that you send already-backed-up archives to?

So a couple of MSIs (3 out of ~15 or so) throw up a 1619 error (can't find that MSI/path) when being pushed as part of a task sequence via MDT. Using the same credentials and options manually, the MSI installs fine. I've changed one of the installers to use an explicit UNC path rather than the relative path to the MDT share as Google suggests that may improve reliability for troublesome installers in MDT. Does MDT do something daft that I'm unaware of? Chokes on certain MSI switches (everything's using a basic msiexec /i whatever.msi /qn)?

Has anyone who bought it via GOG (store credit knocked £5 off) managed to actually connect to the servers? I have a perpetual "press X to reconnect" at the bottom of the "upload your discoveries" page. All my discoveries have "discovered by Explorer" currently. I'm assuming people who bought via Steam have "discovered by $Steam_Handle" instead?

So did anyone else launch & quit, launch & quit until their starter planet wasn't a terrible hellscape? I've found my first garden world in the first system I jumped to. No toxins, no rads, nothing trying to eat me so far (unlike previous planets). I've also found loads of crashed ships only to be disappointed to find they're the same as or slightly better if I didn't have to shell out to repair them. My hopes of not blowing 1.5 million for 24 slots seem unlikely.

Does calling msiexec /x {ChomeMSI-ID-GoesHere} /qn to remove the installed version also fall over with "can't find install source (or similar)"? I suspect it probably does (from what I can remember when I ran into this in the past).

[mdt] WSUS updates detected, but errors out on download?
pete replied to pete's topic in O/S Deployment
Gah, ignore me - latest build attempt detected and pulled updates (no, I didn't change anything related to WSUS in-between). -
So I'm faffing around with MDT (clearing a few things from my list of "things you really should have implemented") and I've hit a snag. I've a basic task sequence entry to install Win 10 1607 then detect and install updates from WSUS after Office 2013 gets installed (and then sysprep/capture). The WSUS check happens in the "State Restore" phase and after applications have been installed and the computer has rebooted once. I've imported the WSUS SSL cert earlier in the task sequence so it doesn't choke on the internal CA. Looking in ZTIWindowsUpdate.log it correctly detects 55 updates pending (mostly Office 2013, a few C++). As soon as it starts the "Begin Downloading" part I get an: ZTI ERROR - Unhandled error returned by ZTIWindowsUpdate: (-2145091577 0x80248007) for which the Internet has varied theories depending on what you're actually doing. A few threads mention Windows Defender or other particular patches being problematic, but I'd expect it to at least download them and then choke rather than just erroring out as soon as it begins. Any ideas? I've seen mentions of rebooting it too many times breaking the task sequence, but I've only got one reboot beforehand:

What's DNS like? Does dcdiag /q and repadmin /replsum come back clean? What's your spanning tree root set to? (show spanning-tree on Procurve kit, probably similar on Cisco). Check the port counters on your core switch(es) - are you getting dodgy packets from anywhere? High amount of dropped packets from a particular edge switch? Ultimately if you can't pin it down you're going to have to remove uplinks between switches and test where it happens/never happens.

Assuming that's a 5400zl, you should have a "clear" button on it. Pressing that for a second or two will clear any console passwords set, then you can connect to switch via serial console/ssh/telnet (and maybe via browser, can't remember) and change the password(s). Don't fiddle with the "reset" button at the same time you're pressing "clear" or you may inadvertantly wipe the switch config.

That's not entirely clear. The July and August 2016 versions of the Product Terms document (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/product-licensing/products.aspx) says: Which implies schools with Software Assurance (included with EES) can use Enterprise, otherwise they'd have put "LTSB" in there. Previous (August 2015, for example) versions of the doc have precluded Enterprise: So whatever Microsoft's intent, the terms of use says "Schools can use Enterprise" and I have Enterprise KMS keys available against my EES agreement started in July.

When will the Anniversary Update appear on the VLSC?
pete replied to FragglePete's topic in Windows 10
Has anyone found 1607's a bit flakier than 1511 when initially talking to a 2008R2 WSUS server? WSUS says the client is allegedly at 100% patched, the client gives a error when checking for updates (after the usual few reboots, wuauclt /detectnow and gpupdates). After about half an hour sitting around it eventually sorts itself out and pull updates*. *3rd-party software using WSUS as the repository. -
Anti-vaxxers and colon cleansing adverts? Clearly a bastion of critical thinking, scientific rigour and completely unlikely to be people with tinfoil wallpaper*. *yes, this is a thing. We've had some......interesting parents over the years.

@DalekSec The leather bands are rather good. With screen off by default and wifi off, I get ~4 days on a Moto 360v2. WiFi seemed a bit pointless when it can grab stuff via bluetooth from the phone.

We too, use Namecheap. We've also used LetsEncrypt for a couple of things that're smart enough to renew their certs automatically.

I just got a "hey we no longer support managing the config on servers unless you're paying us" notification when I logged into the console just now.
-
Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. All the promotional photos/videos are of how nice the surrounding are and partying, very little on course content. There's no mention of who's doing the teaching or their credentials/things they've done. It seems aimed at giving marketing wonks some clue about web development. There are better ways to spend $3K.

I shall celebrate with fish and chips. Well, that and upgrading everyone's version of Office.
-
Like we didn't see that one coming. The new "Win 10 Education Pro" seems to be designed to avoid "stop advertising to kids" complaints. It'll be interesting to see the response from people who paid for a copy (i.e: not a "free" upgrade) only to have adverts thrust at them.

Wifi Internet access reporting
pete replied to Carrot63's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
If you're using user auth for RADIUS on the wireless, you'll have a log of accounts associated with each device (AD account + MAC is logged by default). Look at event id 6278 and 6272, for example with source "Network Policy Server" (assumes Windows Server providing RADIUS). If you can tie that to DHCP leases at that time of interest, you know who* was accessing what on which device. or rather, whose account is tied to the device.
