So either Deckard's not a replicant or he found a way to reset his timer. I really hope this doesn't devolve into a Han/Luke buddy movie.

Cisco Switch disabling POE to power another switch. Help!!
pete replied to Dan_ATR's topic in Wired Networks
So what did you change? And does reverting the change fix the issue? What else does it power? What's the power draw on the switch at boot, when everything connected will pull significantly (usually 2-3 times what it needs normally) more than they will once they've booted and settled? -
Is SSO a viable alternative option? From a user perspective (assuming already signed into Google/AD/Azure AD/whatever) it should function the same.

They print to their own poster-paint be-speckled Bizhub C308. We use PaperCut with postscript drivers. We have discussed getting a refurb large-format printer for final pieces, but I'm waiting on an art teacher contact to divulge where they got theirs from and what it costs to run.

How important is it to have good equipment in the tech field...
pete replied to madmin's topic in General Chat
If I have budgetary authority, it's not an issue because I can solve the problem. If I don't, then yes it would be brought up during interview if the hardware was substandard or not fit for purpose. Maybe they're not aware, maybe there's some funding coming along to change that, maybe they're tightfisted or the company is facing financial hardship - you need to know what it is before entering a contract and it's a red flag that needs some due diligence. "Hey, we'll pay you $sufficient_amount for you to consider moving jobs, but you'll be using terrible equipment that hampers your ability to do the job and you can't change that", would probably cause me to decline the offer unless the work was very interesting.* *"Say, working on massive telescopes or something? I'd probably bend a little on the "no terrible equipment" rule. -
We did this with those tv remote watches back in the day. Once the penny dropped, we stopped doing it.

MLS.net Hosted & AD Azure ** Official confirmation
pete replied to kevin_lane's topic in Cloud Services
Did you have any issues with duplicated users (I haven't turned it on yet, just leery of it happening)? And did you cut out the local AD sync completely once Azure AD was working? In an ideal world [email protected] from local AD and [email protected] from Azure should result in just one user account in MLS, but..... More info: supportfiles.microlib.co.uk/mls.azure.ad.pdf (assumes you don't have Azure AD configured, adjust accordingly if you have). -
^ That, there's a thread around here about deploying the STL plugin. Here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/140899-stl-extension-sketchup.html

^ strict.bing.com is down currently, so I'd do something else for a bit. Down For Everyone Or Just Me -> Check if your website is down or up?

Article: Google G Suite Webinar - 08 Dec 2016
pete replied to Dos_Box's topic in Legacy CMS Comments
Also interested. Not sure if I'll definitely be able to make it. Question-wise: How long will using Azure Active Directory as a source of truth/authentication be supported? -
Anyone using u2f security keys to secure G Suite

^ I think you'll find the same issue for more 2FA setups - you'll be asked for a get-out-of-jail option should said 2FA key/phone/whatever get dropped down the toilet. Either setup near a phone or discuss making the "no personal devices" policy a bit more granular (say, OK in the staff room, not OK anywhere else). -
^ Pretty much. You can configure* them to point to a specific URL if you wanted to show certain content (say you're running a museum and using Chromecasts to deliver specific content to different TVs), but that's about it. It's (well, that and the wired interface option) why we went for Apple TVs instead. *developer license and a bit of fiddling required.

Mapping network drive in RD Web access using GPP
pete replied to maxrebo's topic in Windows Server 2012
You don't need* S: mapped for SIMS to work. Source: we're running SIMS as a 2012R2 RemoteApp and using UNC paths in SIMS.ini (as we do with the laptop-specific SIMS.ini because it's faster if resuming from sleep and then firing up SIMS). You can either install SIMS from a UNC path (automatically puts UNC paths into SIMS.ini) or push out a modified SIMS.ini after install. *OK, technically you do need it for Exams Organiser, Nova T6 (I think) and Options, but most SIMS users have no need of these. -
Problems with AD/Office 365 Password Sync not working.
pete replied to DJ-1701's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
If you're MITM-ing the connection, I can see Azure/Azure AD Connect going "nope, something dodgy going on here - abort connection". I'd disable interception for that server to the azure endpoints and try again. Has it ever worked? If it's just one person, reset their AD password to the same as it is now, wait two minutes and then try again. -
Dodgy ads being served by the Independent.co.uk?
pete replied to pete's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yeah, I flagged up mdotlabs.com, moatads.com and hitlist.ru as the likely culprits on the SW blocklist feedback form yesterday afternoon. edit: And I've just emailed them in case it's not deliberate (ISTR they used Outbrain at one point, so their ad choices may be questionable). -
Dodgy ads being served by the Independent.co.uk?

I'm seeing something linked to the indy serving up thumbnails for the popular site that used to be a hamster. They're getting blocked, but there's definitely something awry. -
Do you have a data-sharing agreement in place with the company? Have you read/amended/discussed it as necessary?

Book clubs pander to Daily Mail values, while porn/dating sites are "sordid"? If a bunch of consenting adults out of earshot of the kids decide at lunchbreak to discuss eclectic uses for elastic bands amongst themselves, I don't see a problem provided they're not weirding out other people. If the same bunch of consenting adults have signed an agreement saying "I won't break the AUP" and then (by having terrible IT skills/knowledge/common sense) break the AUP then they're going to potentially weird out at least the IT staff (who they know will be alerted to their activities).

As mentioned up-thread, the ring pull cans don't have a sharp "top" edge. The inner edge of the lip is unfinished, but it's like a blunt knife - you'd have to saw it back and forth to cut yourself.

The finance gnomes have spotted this: Online Free School Meals (OFSM) for primary and secondary schools and academies | Capita SIMS For which I've just grabbed the user manuals to have a poke around prior to a Capita person coming out to be quizzed about it. A quick search on here doesn't reveal much. If you're using it, how are you (IT) and finance/whoever finding it? Is there anything odd/bad about it? The initial literature says it's cross-platform on all device/browsers - does this reflect reality?

^ I think @limawhiskey and I were treating the phone as the second factor to a laptop/desktop/whatever. Instead of being used itself to directly access Google accounts. Based on your "we don't allow personal devices" assertion. Plus, people are more likely to notice (and report, or at least whine about) losing a phone.
