We've had a few incidents recently where SoftwareA has missed some pretty major and obvious problems simply because our kids' spelling sometimes leaves a bit to be desired. Thankfully, SoftwareB can handle typos, records a bit more context around an event and evaluates that, flipping up an alert. SoftwareA, however, is lauded as an eSafety marvel with lots of checks, whereas SoftwareB is more of a general network web filter tool. Am I being unreasonable in thinking that if I'd built SoftwareA, I'd make sure that it picks up common typos (especially given the serious nature of the incidents)?

I'm currently using Namecheap or Let's Encrypt depending on whether the OS has a reliable method of automatically renewing the cert (Linux) or not (Windows).

^ On Win10 Enterprise 1607 I haven't seen any problems so far with ~12 or so computers installed. Test hosts also came back cleanly. I have just spotted this in /r/sysadmin though: Which is something of a showstopper.

^ For NG? Yes, pretty much every time it's been flawless for us. For MF? Give your copier vendor a bit to test it against their kit and confirm everything's fine before you upgrade.

I'm waiting on assurances of copier compatibility (plus a few other things I've been nudging $manufacturer for), but the mobile printing revamp looks good. https://www.papercut.com/blog/development-team/2017/03/07/new-and-noteworthy-in-papercut-17-0/

If there's a regional outage or load spike in Microsoft's UK datacentres (Cardiff, Durham, London), they won't be able to shift your requests/data to another region to smooth it out. If you also need to ensure Azure (VMs, storage, whatever) products are locked to the UK (vs Western Europe/the US), you're paying more per month.

When will the macOS Sierra-compatible driver be released?
pete replied to pete's topic in Promethean Direct Support
Update, the Apple-wielding inhabitants here are cautiously optimistic that the latest version of ActivInspire (2.9) has fixed Sierra-related pen jumping and missing strokes (plus sign, percentage etc). One of them is getting on OK and everyone else is watching them to see if that holds true for a week or two before they upgrade to Sierra. -

^ I'm thinking of something similar with Eset. "Free" in the case of Avast is quickly becoming "actually more expensive than throwing £2-3K a year at an alternate vendor" given the disruption the latest daftness has caused.

So is this just for new customers? Asking because I already have umpteen vendors happily using Groupcall and I'm reluctant to tolerate special snowflakes.

Office 365, which apps did you rollout to your staff and faculty?

Everything but Exchange (onsite, though I'd like to shift it offsite). -
From the doc: Which seems excessively long if local legislation changes to require it. It'd be useful to have a "for a tenancy of sizes X, Y and Z, the average completion times are 1, 2 and 3" indicator.

Have you tried bribing your friendly Technology dept with biscuits? They could knock something up with a welder, existing TV bracket, some angle iron and a bench grinder to smooth out the welds. Then just powder-coat if the oven's big enough or use some plasti-coat/dip.

@Trapper OK, back up a bit. We have two Designated Safeguarding Leads. One is a DH (primary) and the other is the head (backup). How many have you got? Or are you sending per-year-group reporting to HOYs? Here, the DH receives the reports and disseminates as needed for her or the HOYs to handle depending on severity.

While I might pass on things I've discovered to the DSL, advise on things within my remit and interpret third-party reports when necessary, I lack the pastoral context to properly evaluate what a report means for a particular child. That's even before we get into the whole "DSL has to be appropriately senior in order to design, implement and enforce policy" aspect of it. TLDR: run for the hills.

There's a Spiceworks thread here: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1970504-user-profile-service-failed-the-logon?page=2 on the same topic. The Avast rep is encouraging everyone to open a ticket if they're affected. Temporarily disabling the Avast self-defense module also apparently fixes it.

If you're inexplicably seeing people logged in with temporary profiles from ~01-03-16 to now across Win 7 and Win 10, without a lot of rhyme or reason, it's probably Avast. We had a spate of it this morning. There's a thread beginning on the Avast forums here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=198161.0 If your user hive looks something like this (before reboot of an affected PC) and you're getting temp profiles on login, it's likely to be Avast. Post-reboot, the hives are back to how they should be, but whatever Avast is doing locks ntuser.dat and so Windows falls back to a temp profile. On the Windows 10 machines I've checked, rebooting without touching the faulty profile has brought it back. If you attempt to flush the cached profile it fails because ntuser.dat is locked until the next reboot.

We have an Netbotz Rackmonitor 200. It's not bad, but you'll spend a few days (set alerting thresholds, wait 24hrs to see if appropriate, adjust, wait...) tweaking it. Unless your server room is properly sealed, you may find you need "winter" and "summer" thresholds.

What would you change, if anything, in this backup system design?
pete replied to localzuk's topic in Enterprise Software
How much data are we talking about in 1) initially and how much churn is there? In the eventual plan (everything centralised and pushed across the WAN (riverbeds?) to other schools): a) How much of an impact would losing the central site (say a fire in the server room, JCB through your fibre) be to day-to-day operations of the other schools? b) Can the secondary step up as the backup site for the other schools until the central site gets up and running? Do the remote schools have onsite backup as well, or are they relying on the central site for backup and restore? -
Enterprise (clients) and LTSB (kiosk/single-purpose devices). I'm tempted to start using Education just because I'd have to fiddle with it less before deploying.

Nope - we did the first couple of times just so we (IT) could see how the invigilators and kids got on, but thereafter it's phone support, same as any other exam.

^ Nothing quite that bad, though our old FMS database (we moved to something else years ago) is technically still required for financial audit purposes. Said auditors will definitely not be getting biscuits with their tea should they ever request access to it.
