  1. No idea - I can't replicate it here as either me or a normal end-user. If it's not a false positive, I suspect that they're being served a dodgy advert. Since we block adverts at the gateway, I wouldn't see it and (depending on my browser cache/cookies) I'll get different adverts served so it's hard to check.
  2. Is anyone else having end-users moaning that http://www.tes.com is being blocked by Avast at the moment if they're using Chrome? (26-08-15, midday). I've got a remote user with the problem, but I can't replicate it here using the same workstation build and config and other sites are fine for them. edit: Virustotal.com is reporting that TES is clean. Quttera is saying there's a couple of iffy things, but their heuristics have been a bit trigger-happy in the past.
  3. I find wunderground.com to be more accurate than the Met Office forecasts. It does help that there's someone down the road with a weather station uploading extremely local forecast data.
  4. Explain the "two SIMS systems" part. Are you entering candidates from both systems? Are they the same or a different centre number? A2C looks at your EXAMOUT and EXAMIN folders on the SIMS share. If it finds an entry file in EXAMOUT and can match it to a configured exam board it'll upload the file. Results files are downloaded to EXAMIN.

    skypool ?

"And if you buy this apartment, you'll get a magnificent view in the kitchen of........oh....er....Mr Jones' undercarriage as he swims past in the nude....he lives just next door...on to the lounge" Sure it's not just a stupid PR stunt?

    Ubuntu WinConn

How are you authenticating to SIMS? SIMS (SQL) auth or against Active Directory?

    Ubuntu WinConn

I'm assuming you've tested that the SIMS RemoteApp works on a Windows client? Is the error coming from WinConn or from the RemoteApp server and WinConn's passing on the message? Do the event logs on the server give any clues? What does /var/log/syslog on the Ubuntu client (or wherever WinConn dumps errors) say? Failing that look in the event logs on the SIMS Server. What command line are you using? You're going directly to pulsar.exe, correct? (by which I mean you're not using the "run simsload.exe, then run pulsar.exe" method). I haven't run SIMS through WinConn, but I have tried to get it playing nicely in Wine (don't bother) and it's a pig.
  8. I get paged about serious* problems with core systems by Icinga and depending on the issue I either go in there and then or go in a bit earlier in the morning. Like most sensible sysadmins who value their free time I've made things sufficiently robust that this is an infrequent occurrence. I'm about 10 minutes walk away from the school and have keys and alarm codes because (as someone else said upthread), I can't do my job without them and it's inconsiderate to wake someone else up if there's no need. I'm on the emergency** contact list, but sufficiently low down that I've never been called. I don't respond to end-user problems out-of-hours. *Defined as: "If I don't fix this RightNow is it going to affect the ability to run the school in the morning?". **"Help, the school's on fire/been broken into/invaded by hippos"
  9. For the most part, usually the Thursday after Patch Tuesday after scouring the Internet for rumblings of problems. Out-of-band patches like the one coming out today ( ) get assessed and usually deployed quickly regardless of patch windows.
  10. Devices please, see poll.
  11. I suspect I know what the answer is, but...

    Exams day

Checked we had all the patches, updates and Performance Measures files, checked the Exams Newsfeed for last-minute hilarity, tidied the EXAMIN folder, left A2C running overnight to pull the results. Walked in this morning ~9am to find that what Exams Organiser is calling some qualifications on the Results Broadsheet is different* (and wrong), but the Candidate Statement of Results is accurate. Cue the Exams Officer and I manually going through the broadsheet to compare each qualification against a student who took that course to check we had everything we needed. Oh, and the fact that twins still causes a problem with accurate results matching with certain boards. *Food Tech and Product Design lumped into the same column, for example, or General Studies being called "Logic and Philosophy". PM is on v3 and we've re-downloaded and refreshed basedata and re-imported.
  13. Somewhere out there is a Dell tech confident in his massively resilient stash of naughty videos.
  14. Get BGinfo to write it to the logon wallpaper.
  15. More workspaces = more wallpaper.
  16. Seems cheaper than a few other places, doesn't *appear* to be grey market. Has anyone bought hardware from them? cheers
  17. You can specify proxy support - IP, Port and Auth/NoAuth (and credentials, if appropriate) is necessary info on the ticket. Poking around with the MSI it looks like it's been built with WiX.
  18. ^ As everyone else has said, that's normal. So long as you've blocked out the days that are training and holidays you'll be fine.
  19. We've got a 1000D as the IT "No you can't borrow it" camera that we use for events/publicity shots. It gives pretty good results for the price.
  20. Cool, I assume you can specify proxy support in the request? (or munge the property table to set it)
  21. It looks like they've messed up. Your DocStorage path should look something like: ....\DocStorage\SIMSServerName\SQLInstanceName\sims So if you move SQL from server01\sims2008 to server02\sims2012 you need to stop the document server and rename the folders appropriately.
  22. Wait, Avast support do MSIs to order? They kept that quiet and it would be a little more elegant than my current deployment (uses the .exe with file version checks).
  23. ^ No, I was in two minds when building the recent slim image but didn't bother. I did do the McAfee client on images for years without issue. Have you tried setting on-access scanning to disabled before you sysprep and then let the Avast portal turn it back on after client activation? I'm using WPP (SCCM-lite) to push out Avast and IIRC someone in this thread is using PDQ Deploy.
  24. http://simsservername:8080/ http://simsservername:8080/* http://simsservername.domain.whatever:8080/ http://simsservername.domain.whatever:8080/* If your document server is running on another port, look in Tools > Setups > Document Management Server to check the settings.
  25. Sysadmin day consisted of me cursing PHP. Though the day did end with icecream.
