You're going to have to give a bit more info. Which server? What update(s)? Drivers? Are the local spoolers crashing and then not restarting (tries twice, then gives up by default - check the logs) or did they not start in the first place? Are the people who can print using the same driver as the ones who can't? Check.

For Kindles, you can assign 6 devices per account. Assuming no-one's concurrently reading the same text, you technically need 1 copy per 6 devices.

BBC MicroBit Restricted Installation Allowed thru GPO
pete replied to chazzy2501's topic in Windows 7
^ We're in the same boat, but our test (just 3) microbits only turned up last week and the actual class sets are anyone's guess. I'll admit I spotted your post and thought "brilliant, I'll see how he gets on before I start working on that". -
How to print from Ipad to windows print server
pete replied to genesis's topic in Learning Network Manager
I'm assuming you don't have a spare Mac Mini to do a second install of PaperCut as documented here: iOS Printing (iPad & iPhone) Configuring a Macintosh Secondary Print Server IME that doesn't work with iPads (last tested a few months ago, PaperCut 15.1) for anything but photos because you can't readily browse for the file you want (unless something's changed in the interim). It works for non-iOS stuff. -
^ What are the touchscreens like? The ones they had on the stand at BETT (TN with poor viewing angles) put me off a bit.

^ You've gone into OpenManage to check it's not the "hey I've decided to do a battery test / charge the battery" warning? Which is benign (provided it passes the test).

^ A few companies will want the new info for license novation, but most just want to ensure your contact details are correct. I sent all my supplier contacts an email with: Hello, We (Schoolname, Town, Postcode) have either bought, goods, services or licensed software from you within the last ~5 years. This is a notice to inform you that: From AcademyStartDate, we hope to become an academy operating as a limited company with charity status. For the purposes of legislation, funding and eligibility for educational discounts/purchasing schemes we are still a school in the eyes of the DfE. Our address and contact details will remain the same. After AcademyStartDate there will be an academy answering to SchoolName at the same premises, email addresses and phone number. We do not yet have our company number, nor official confirmation of our registered name. Should you require any forms to be filled out for transfer of licenses or credit accounts or other agreements, consider this a gentle nudge to let us know what those might be. Regards MyName

The OP's cabinet is here: 600mm x 1000mm Server Cabinet I can't find any reviews of it (or them, unless they sell them as a different brand) online, so I'd want to see one in person before OK-ing the purchase. Why not simply tell the install company that they need to provide the rack you want, or just source it yourself? An unbranded 42U enclosed cabinet starts around £500 (https://www.racksolutions.co.uk, for example).

Just tried it (new forward zone called Bing > new CNAME of strict.bing.com), gives a "An alias (CNAME) record cannot be added to this DNS name. The DNS name contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record" error. A CNAME that points a DNS name to another DNS name within AD lookup zones works fine (say pointing server.ad.school.net to bongo.com), but when pointing an external site at another external site I've always used DNAMEs. So your autodiscover example above works fine, but if you try (say) pointing banana.com to autodiscover.outlook.com in a new "banana.com" zone, it should fail with an error until you use a DNAME.
-
^ Windows DNS* won't let you point a DNS name at another DNS name using a CNAME. Use a Domain Alias (DNAME) under "other new records" instead. *or at least 2008R2 won't.

I've tested this on an iPad and a Nexus 5. We have the free Office365 education licenses assigned to valid accounts on both devices and all can view Office365 documents on Android/iPad using the new Excel, Word & Powerpoint apps but when we try to save/upload a document, I get told to log into an account with a valid Office365 subscription (even though we're already logged in). Should the error be "hey you need to give us cash or this won't work" or has anyone got it working with the free tier?

I'd lean towards tidying up WSUS rather than using an USB drive. Have you gone in and declined patches for operating systems you no longer use* and then told it to have a clearout? *just unticking the OS in Options > Products and Classifications doesn't remove the patches from the WSUS store, it just doesn't download any more patches. If you want to clear out XP (for example), you'll need to search for and explicitly decline the XP patches, then run the cleanup. The easiest way is to create a new update view and filter it to just show XP stuff. If you're doing Vista as well, just be careful as there's some 2008/Vista overlap for certain patches.

Tried dropping the door onto a solid wall (it should create the gap itself)?

How did you escape the Capital Wasteland and what made you give up radio?

^ Yeah, I was eyeing it up at the weekend but saw lots of people moaning that the timed missions rewarded Leroy Jenkins rather than more creative approaches.

I was poking around with a test install of 10.5 last week (installed, added a test student group, fiddled around a bit with what people see then got distracted by users). One of the things I did that diverted from the instructions was to use a standard user (hapdemolookup) for the inital config. This worked fine (as I expected it to) for looking up AD groups and the like, but you're explictly using a Domain Admin account in the docs and videos. So....are you relying on using the DA credentials for the home drive access (rather than passing on the user-supplied credentials) or is there another reason......? cheers Pete

^ That. Being unable to audit who accessed and modified pupil and staff records, medical data, employment information etc is a Safeguarding issue now.

@PhilNeal Given that your change request system hosts duplicate requests for the same thing (one example): 1510-3406555 1311-1230629 1509-3384283 1209-1138593 1502-1360267 1302-1170976 1406-1309692 how confident are you that whoever's considering change requests to take forward is actually going through and aggregating similar requests when considering the demand? Or better yet, why doesn't the "new change request" form default to a "search to see if anyone else has asked for something like this" form, the same way opening a case does?

^ It's worth poking Dave directly - what's on the web shop is usually a subset of actual gear they've got kicking around/can get hold of.
-
^ Yup, there's been a lot of threads about it over the years, usually when some sysadmin has had to help an investigation into potential staff misconduct. Responses from Capita have been either "ooh, it's really tricky" or "we'll get round to it sometime.......ooh look a ferrari *runs*". There's a decent news article to be written about most schools inability to meet their data protection obligations as a direct result of using the most mainstream MIS provider.

^ Nope. For Windows auth/SSO it launches ExamsW.exe with the /t (trusted) switch instead. Windows login: SIMS login: In terms of applications, I know the problem affects Nova T6, Options, Exams Organiser and the old System Manager 6 (which yes, no-one should be using).
-
Which is 75% likely to be the same password they're using for domain login. 1) N+1 passwords = people writing them down. 2) One decent password is better than two terrible ones 3) SIMS access is curtailed as soon as a leaver's domain account is disabled, no need to manage accounts in two places. 4) You can set password policies for a Windows domain login. 5) SIMS-based logins leave the username and password in the clear (viewable in taskmanager with command-line column turned on) when launching SIMS components like exams organiser, leading to password disclosure to anyone with admin rights on the computer/terminal server they're using. Since SIMS has practically zero auditing unless money is changing hands, a user with admin rights on the computer can act as another user within SIMS.

WSUS Package Publisher is SCCM-lite and is free. It bolts onto WSUS. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2012/145271-wsus-package-publisher.html
