Which key did you use? The notes for that fix: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086418 Imply you need a "Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10" key, because the key you're using needs to be good for both the Server 2012R2 *and* Windows 10. (yes, I'm also doing this - installed the patch yesterday and plan to swear at it this afternoon)

Two eyebolts in the wall, "U" loop either side of the trolley lining up with the bolts, two padlocks. Is this a "stop people nicking it", "stop people turning it around and fiddling with the cables when they have no clue?" or both? If I'm breaking in to nick stuff, I'll probably bring bolt cutters. I'm assuming a lockable trolley so you can secure the nuts holding the U-loops on the inside. Failing that, remove a bit of powder-coating and get Technology to weld a loop on either side.

Looking on the KCOM portal > Performance, I see the attached (30days, 7 days, 24hrs). Is anyone else seeing these dips? I'm aware it could be a simple case of "whatever's feeding data to those graphs can't keep up" or "someone's messing around with the monitoring", but given it's customer-facing monitoring I'd expect a "hey, we're messing about and it might look a bit odd" note on the portal if that were the case. And the Internet has been non-specifically grindy at times unrelated to the little darling's escapades.

^ Use powershell (new-transportrule) to create the rule and just pull the words from a text file. Disclaimer: I don't have exchange 2013, but you can do this in 2007, so I assume it's similar. You may want to have the rule divert the messages to a "swearbox" mail account too, just in case there's some random nastiness going on that your CPO hasn't picked up on yet.

We went down the 4 year route (may have to ask for it, but it's an option). Reasons: 5 years is too long - the other school in our umbrella trust had a fair amount of problems with reliability in the 5th year. 3 years is fine, but the kit's generally pristine. It's more expensive to run a 3yr than a 4yr. This is for 8 copiers on our site and 6 (I think) at the other school. Individual contracts but "give us a discount because you're getting two for the effort of one".

We do internaldomain.school.county.sch.uk on a single forest + domain. Using the child domain(s) as a security boundary doesn't really gain you anything that setting sensible permissions to start with wouldn't. When we migrated to a single domain (from two completely separate domains with a one-way trust between admin and curriculum) I gathered SLT round a table with SLT-friendly diagrams and said "I think we should integrate the domains for $list_of_reasons*, these are the $list_of_implications**, but ultimately it's your heads on the block if something goes wrong so what do you want to do?" *Simplicity, ease of maintenance, clearer permissions, less duplication of resources/hardware, getting rid of legacy cruft, one account for everyone. More IT time to do useful things. **None really. All the failure modes caused by misconfiguration, slinging something on the wrong network share etc were present in the two-domain model due to the one-way trust.

^ From memory, regardless of where I put python.txt (downloaded from Internet) as part of the package, it still squawked if it couldn't pull the one from the Internet at install time. I suppose you could edit the installer to remove that check (and set python as a dependency package in SCCM/WPP so it ensured a version of Python was installed), but it's on my "probably will do, but not important right now" list. A possible quick-and-dirty hack would be to point JetBrains: Development Tools for Professionals and Teams to an internal webserver with an "updates" folder holding the correct python.txt while you're deploying it.

This morning it looks OK-ish. Well, the KMS keys are missing but an email to [email protected]* should fix that (and the missing Windows Enterprise and MDOP).

We signed up for a 3yr EES last week and things started appearing around the 23rd in the VLSC, but it's not all there. Yesterday I received an order confirmation along the lines of "this is what you've ordered", only just now to receive the same confirmation with minus values alongside the quantity in it. Is this standard MS licensing "no-one knows how it works" and I should just wait a few days for them to sort it out? I've got my software vendor poking them to work out what's going on, but it seems a bit more pants-on-head than when we started our (ancient, but still valid) Select Plus Agreement.

Dying Light, Doom, Mad Max. Everything else is strange RPGMaker greenlit stuff or I already own it.

Laptops only. We did experiment with classroom desktops but got fed up having them in an inconsistent state (kids messing with them, staff changing things and confusing following teacher). Laptops also mean that work done at home is more likely to be done on an encrypted, patched device with working antivirus.

Some's spotted this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/education/imagine-academy/default.aspx Which looks like you can pay for on a yearly basis and get a set amount (possibly via EES) and get a set amount of Microsoft exam vouchers: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/education/imagine-academy/become-a-member/default.aspx which might be useful for a few things we're doing here. There're no results for it* on Edugeek and most of the software vendors I've spoken to are unfamiliar with exactly how it works and the costs involved. *"imagine academy"

Restricting student images on Office365 to internal mail only?
pete replied to 1066girl's topic in Cloud Services
^ That's interesting - I was pondering doing the integration (mainly so teachers could put face<>name for new intake), but held off after asking myself "justify why you're using pupil photos in this manner and who can see them?" -
"Here's a handy tool to check" *oh cool, sling in script, dump to csv for everything* "also requires HP-specific framework no-one who reimages their hardware will have installed" *FFS*

Been playing with the closed beta for a bit - is anyone using Docker as sacrificial environments for computing courses?

Only bought one or two laptops (X-series Thinkpads, so pretty bombproof), but have had no problems with Dave or the hardware.

Deliberate. They're programmed into our phone system as $Company Helldesk, mostly as a hint to my more demanding users to give first line a break unless they're being particularly daft.

^ Does the Office event log show anything useful after failing to open it? Do you have any GPOs that specify trusted locations for Office docs? What happens if you upload an excel file - can you then download it and open it OK? (is it the specific file that's problematic (macros) or is it Office365)
-
A domain user with no GPOs still gets default domain policy/things at the top-level of the domain. (Well, unless you sling them in an OU with blocked inheritance). Are you doing any HTTPS interception that could be causing it? Does it work in another browser? Is your test domain user pulling a default profile from somewhere? (chances are it is - what happens if you point the profile location it to the test user's homedir?) Does portal.office.com work? (it'll redirect to online.microsoftonline.com)
-
We've been running it since Feb this year without issue (and also didn't find any info). Give the helldesk a shout for confirmation. Historically, Capita have only been leery about new versions of stuff, not service packs that fix problems with the supported versions.

[sims] Vanishing Attendance Marks - Something Wrong, or User Error?
pete replied to JSpaced's topic in MIS Systems
Not without something odder than usual in the land of SIMS. Does database diagnostics run through OK? I'd also lean towards "didn't press save" or "sims client on workstation fell over", but if she's doing attendance on a regular basis it seems odd that 50% of it went missing before she noticed. Does she mean where she fills in the gaps for missing attendance (due to teachers/parents being slack), which could be a small number or are we talking "manual entry of all-school attendance"?- 4 replies

[sims] Implications for SIMS & FMS if Server is upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2
pete replied to kshah58's topic in MIS Systems
^ You'll need to wipe the server and reinstall from scratch. In-place upgrades from 32bit > 64bit aren't supported.
