Cheap, robust phone with 3-4 weeks battery life on standby?
pete replied to pete's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I'm considering an unlocked 150. Not sure about the new 3310 - reviews have been "meh" and I suspect it won't be as robust as the original (my 3310 and an 8210 survived being run over). -
We use this: Monitoring In line with government advice and conforming to the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 (Employment Practice Code Article 3), SCHOOLNAME monitors all ICT systems connected to the school network to ensure a stable network environment and fix problems before they become major issues. SCHOOLNAME may monitor and audit users and their use of ICT to promote good practice and ensure users are complying with policy. Deliberate misuse will be reported to the Headteacher and illegal activity will be reported to the police. All SCHOOLNAME computers report the contents of any files and Internet traffic likely to be a cause for concern to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and their deputies. This happends regardless of where (at school, at home, elsewhere) the device is. For the avoidance of doubt, activities carried out on SCHOOLNAME devices will be judged according to the AUP regardless of where that device is or when it is being used.

Same - I spoke to Konica East IT and they asked me to raise it with our account manager. So I sent him a feature request that he's passed up the chain.

Konica Minolta C3350 and C284e series won't scan to SMB shares with SMB1 disabled. Newer models (C308 replaces the C284e) work fine.

I need a robust, water-resistant phone with a decent (3-4 weeks) standby battery life. I've been looking at phones aimed at contractors such as the KAZAM Life R6, but that model has reviews suggesting the keypad lock doesn't lock out emergency numbers and it's too easy to pocket-dial. Given the phone will mostly be turned off and just powered on at set times of the day to check for messages, it's not the end of the world, but... ...has anyone bought a "so you're going to the middle of nowhere" phone recently?

The output of "smbclient --version" will tell you the samba version. If you're running 3.6 or better, you should be fine (though 4.0 or greater is better). https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba3/SMB2 If you post the linux distribution and version info, we may be able to help more.

I'm assuming you're using quotas based on the disk space being discussed, so... Do the quotas affect files stored on shared drives that aren't the home directory as well? Or are they separate? If I've a 6GB quota and I put 4GB in my homedir and 1.5GB in \\server\share\collabwithotherpeople have I used 4GB or 5.5GB of my quota? If it's a staff user on a laptop, has offline files snarled up and it keeps trying to push stuff to the server?

I've just had this back from Avast's corporate marketing manager.

What's the opportunity cost for 100/GB vs 100/100? What will it cost to upgrade mid-contract (100 bearer > 1GB bearer)? What will it cost to go from 100/1GB to (say) 200/1GB on a 1GB bearer mid-contract? Do you plan to use Azure/Amazon/whoever for offsite DR backup anytime soon? Are there plans to collaborate with another local school for anything? Especially SLT plans that're squirrelled away from general view.

I'd guess it's jammed/stripped gears in the mechanism that opens / closes the door. A replacement gearbox is ~£30 the last time I did one. Dismantling it's a bit of a faff, but it's straightforward.

I've heard a rumour that someone local-ish had their systems down from ~midday > evening yesterday, but the source is non-technical so I'm waiting on confirmation.

You may find you'll have to SSH into the QNAP and run "smb2enable".

If I allow Bob to print jobs for Alice using delegated printing (User account > advanced), Bob can go to https://papercutURL/release, login and send Alice's jobs to print. However, if Bob logs into a copier (Konica Bizhubs, in this case) and presses the PaperCut "Release" button, he doesn't see Alice's jobs. What am I missing?

Nope - whenever I'm doing this it's usually a student device in the middle of a pastoral incident, so I don't really have time to play about and test things. My workaround (or rather, the CPO's) is the same as yours.

Skype? Skype for Business if you've O365 configured, since everyone's already got a login and you're a couple of GPOs and DNS entries away from making it seamless. If you homebrew it using OBS or something it'll only be one-way and I'm assuming the briefing is a two-way process and questions/answers can come from either site.

^ Yeah, but the person responding doesn't work for Avast.
-
@bossman got a link? Trawling through their forums I can see quite a lot of people asking and no response from Avast, or the threads over a year old so I'm doubtful as to whether it's still valid.

I can replicate it (getting video evidence of bus-related misbehaviour). I haven't compared to an Android device to see if it's how (dumb usb storage vs media device) the tablet/phone presents itself.

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1986392-avast-free-for-education-ending Spotted this, where the Avast rep states he's been posting the info on Spiceworks for ages. He doesn't mention why they haven't proactively notified customers. So at some point between 45 days > July 2018 I need to buy an antivirus subscription, but the incumbent vendor hasn't bothered to let me know.

Eclipse Library System moved to hosted and now very slow
pete replied to lmgtfy's topic in Educational Software
I know our Librarians were at an Eclipse user group meeting in March where a lot of issues were raised (mostly around performance). It was especially amusing to discover they'd set a good chunk of their Azure instances to spin down at 3pm to save cash. They're apparently planning to change this to 4pm after vigorous feedback was received. -
HP PoE switch - ports failing
pete replied to Stormborn15's topic in Network and Classroom Management
1) With the switch in a known-good state, pretty safe. Even with PoE issues on specific ports, still pretty safe. Just do it when people aren't using the device. 2) It depends why the ports are showing as faulty - did they explain their reasoning? Firmware release notes that fix something related, for example? It's more likely that the support rep needs to work through their checklist before they'll let you RMA it.
