I've just been reading through the install guide (https://support.prometheanworld.com/files/public/pdfs/ClassFlow+Desktop+Installation+User+Guide.pdf) and page 3 stands out. It looks like your options for activating Classflow Desktop are: Connect to a Promethean Interactive Display (so, touchscreen?) (and reconnect every 90 days) Logging into your school's private Classflow environment (paid option, AFAICT) Start a 90-day trial of Classflow Which, absent a grandfathering of existing customers, means I can't use it on our existing (non-touchscreen) boards.

Got any ultra-slims/USFF 8200/8300 series in those containers? I'm in the market as I've used my stash for Xibo boxes and I need another.

Car Self Parking Feature - Do you actually use it?
pete replied to elsiegee40's topic in General Chat
^ So are you and Kitt going to nip to Tesco to experiment for science? -
Nope, wouldn't enable it. I might point them where to look, but you left - I can't give you access to school data or systems. Is this a "person who left still has the old account configured on her personal devices (if you did BYOD, for example) and the device can't handle it, thus preventing adding a new account?" My phone can handle N+1 Google accounts though, so....

Car Self Parking Feature - Do you actually use it?

Does it pay attention to the white lines of a parking bay or does it need obstacles (cars, kerbs, bollards) to work from? I'm just wondering if you were in a deserted supermarket carpark and pressed "park". -
Paxton Net2 Pro - any known annoyances/design issues from an IT POV?
pete replied to pete's topic in Physical Security
That looks interesting, I've given them a nudge for pricing. I'll still need to assign tokens, but being able to set an account expiry in AD and have Paxton use it would be useful. -
Yup, I had to regenerate a couple of internal certs to include the SAN attribute the other day.

We may be using Paxton to control maglocks, rfid entry/exit on external gates around the school site and buzz in/out audio systems for visitors. I've poked around the Paxton website and there's a few things that've triggered my spidey sense, so..... Paxton appear to really prefer you to run it on Win7/8 - I'm assuming this is just their 1st/2nd line lacking experience with server installs? What resources have you allocated to the VM running it? How much of their "optimal spec" (Quad, 8 GB RAM) does it actually use day-to-day? Edit: Follow-up question while I remember - I'm thinking of Mifare tokens for the flexibility in form factor (card, fob, sticker) and easy availability - am I missing out on anything by not using Paxton tokens? Any other strange caveats you can think of?

Trolleys are per-faculty/dept for the aforementioned "taking better care of them" reasons. Teachers are responsible for getting/returning the trolleys or asking site staff to deliver them with sufficient prior warning.

You could add a zone per domain. So you'd have: Zone: http://www.youtube.com Doman Alias (DNAME): restrict.youtube.com Zone: m.youtube.com Domain Alias (DNAME): restrict.youtube.com etc.

Does anyone know if this affects teachers who do part-time marking for AQA? A call to the above helpdesk wasn't that reassuring (the person I got had only just started there and was thrown a bit by my query). And (given they're storing password in the clear and historical interactions) I trust AQA about as far as I can throw them.

MIS documentation - How highly do you rate your MIS documentation
pete replied to Ditto's topic in MIS Systems
Some of them do (as of Spring 17), others still take you to support.capitaes.co.uk (which never resolves). -
Am I right in thinking I'd be able to point SIMS8 on Azure to our Azure AD tenancy for authentication?

Every so often the school will become a Certified Member of SomethingOrOther and there'll be a logo that the dept/person behind it would like to be proudly displayed somewhere on the school website. How do you find the balance between displaying the logo, not playing favourites, but also not making it an eyesore? At the moment we've started to put new logos on the page of the dept that won/acquired them, but that's a stop-gap measure at best. Thoughts so far are: Logos all go into a rotating banner. SLT pick X number of logos that actually fit into the design Have an "awards" page and hive off all but the most impressive/necessary to that. Something else....

Deploy the PPAPI flash (Pepper Flash) .msi from Adobe and Chrome will use it instead of trying to install flash per-user.

For generic mainstream modules? Not bad once you find it (the results on My Account are often far too generic if you mention something like "report"). For more esoteric things that only a couple of people per school will ever user? -
Click in the address bar of explorer so it displays the *actual* path. I suspect Win 7 is using the shortnames (abcdef~1) in the path. That's what my Win10 VM is doing when I test the above. As soon as it used the shortname, it'll let you go deeper down the path in Windows too. If you went ~28-30 levels deep, it should break again if that's the case.

2600.org (old hacking zine). For content filtering, I just tend to add an obscure term ("if you've never seen an elephant ski"*) and score it as bad, then search for it or visit pages likely to contain it (anything to do with Eddie Izzard).

@keyboards Both of those responses are useful information though. In example 01: We see the user isn't reporting problems in a timely manner. This could either be because they're not sure how to, assumes that someone else in their dept will and/or they're lazy, or they believe that IT has time to manually around ~1,000 devices every day to make sure they're happy. Whatever the reason, that needs discussing with them and their line manager because their inaction is impacting other people. In example 02: Yeah, we get those. No, there isn't money this financial year. But I can go back and teach them how to structure a future bid such that it's more likely to be successful. TLDR: If you do a survey and a proportion of your users provide documentation that they're twerps, that's written evidence for you and SLT.

We use the following or a variation of every year: What do we (IT) do well? What works for you? Where could we do better? How can we help you? What projects or plans do you have for the coming year? What would you like to be able to do? Do you need any training on anything?

Does Word 2016 still successfully convert if you restrict the PDF permissions to "view contents"? I know PDF Creator can restrict what the recipient can do with a PDF. If so, sign them digitally with a certificate.

Does it integrate with SW at all? One of the problems we have currently is that $client_monitoring_software has issues regarding typos (so long as you're threatenng to kill yourself with correct spelling, it'll pick it up....otherwise*.....) and SW has real problems with RS lessons. Slinging SW + something else into a single pane of glass for safeguarding cross-referencing would be handy. As it is currently, we get something from $client_monitoring_software and then check context surrounding that time in SW. -- I assume "no extra charge for Visigo Support" doesn't mean "Visigo is free for existing SW customers", just that we're paying a one-off price for it? *I'm only slightly exaggerating.

Starting new job as network manager.
pete replied to Shadow_Walker's topic in Learning Network Manager
Documentation and poking around for hidden minefields such as scheduled tasks running under the credentials of the outgoing employee. Speak to people to see where different groups (IT, SLT, teaching, support staff) think work needs to be done. Identify correlations and prioritise from there. If you change anything (and ideally you shouldn't in the first couple of weeks), document it thoroughly in case the answer to "Oh dear FSM, why is it like that?" is "'cos that's the only way a terrible, yet mission-critical thingy works". -
We've had a few incidents recently where SoftwareA has missed some pretty major and obvious problems simply because our kids' spelling sometimes leaves a bit to be desired. Thankfully, SoftwareB can handle typos, records a bit more context around an event and evaluates that, flipping up an alert. SoftwareA, however, is lauded as an eSafety marvel with lots of checks, whereas SoftwareB is more of a general network web filter tool. Am I being unreasonable in thinking that if I'd built SoftwareA, I'd make sure that it picks up common typos (especially given the serious nature of the incidents)?
