Hi, Are any Wordpress users experiencing any security issues recently - particularly those using themes such as KINGPOWER, LINEN, or OXYGEN? Thanks!

We currently have 10 Joomla based websites (number still growing) that are hosted on Joomla Wired at £8 a site. We are getting to the point where a dedicated server to host multiple sites would be more cost effective. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies? We are looking in the range of £50 - £60 a month.

Hello, We have a few Schools running Jotter 2 which works but is quite outdated, Some of the Schools have signed up for Jotter 3 thinking it was going to be a massive upgrade from their previous free 'Google Sites' website to find that nearly every feature is either in development, buggy or outright broken. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Web Anywhere? Even their own home page is broken

Can anyone give me some guidance on how to register a .sch.uk domain with nominet and who to host it with and how to register with them for the hosting?

Hi Everyone, I’m planning on trying to put together a website for my residents committee (and all owners/tenants) in my block of flats. I’d like for it to provide a website forum and log-on’s for potentially up to 300-400 users. There are 183 flats in my development and most are rented so I’d like to have logon options for both the tenants and owners. Other than the forums I’d like to use the website for hosting minutes of meetings/factoring documents/letters. Some kind of bulk email (for newsletters/etc.) to all users’ would be useful as well. Problem is I really don’t have much of a clue when it comes to putting together a website from scratch. I’ve had a look at 1&1 for hosting which seems like it might do the trick. It offers the option of Linux hosting or MS hosting. I’d guess I’d be looking for Linux hosting and using something free like phpbb since I won’t actually be generating any income from the website. Their mid-range package for £8.99 month offers up to 10 MySQL databases and what looks (to me at least!) like a good range of supported options? Can anyone advise whether that will be sufficient for what I’m planning on doing and whether there’s anything else I should consider or look into before signing up? Any advice appreciated…! TIA

If I change the SSL certificate on one of my web sites, will users get a warning from their browser that the certificate has changed? It would be a fully valid, properly signed certificate, but a different one than it was before. I think I'm just confused, remembering how PuTTY warns me if an ssh server's certificate has changed...but I want to make sure.

Hi guys, I need a cheap (or free) SSL Certificate for our SIMS Learning Gateway server. Anyone got any good recommendations. I can't seem to get any of the links in some of the old threads on this to work. Thanks.

We've had a bill through today from Getty Images, who have seen some images on our website that they believe are their copyright. They are demanding a settlement of #800 per image. The images were put on by our previous web dev. The new web dev didn't have any records to refer to, to verify the copyright permission of the images, so he's in a bit of a tight situation really. The boss has contacted the previous web dev and she says the she 'always kept copyright in mind' but didn't keep any record of any permission obtained. What would be your next course of action? Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

Hi all, been a long time since I did any kind of web development but I may have landed myself a nice little job. Problem is, they're more than likely going to want examples and any sites I've created are long gone. Can anyone recommend any free hosts with decent facilities for PHP, MySQL and any extras? Either free or very cheap; Christmas has me skint but I'd hate to miss out on this job! Thanks in advance

On my webspace I am hosting a load of (perfectly legal) MP3 mixes, of some local glasgow DJs. These links have been spread via forums, facebook etc whatever and ive just checked the logs and im now getting about 1000 hits a month and most of them are direct hits, meaning they are just grabbing the files directly. The webhost hasn't pulled me up yet but its only a matter of time, so was hoping to disable hotlinking to force folk to actually click on a link and view the page which I would put some subtle ads on whicn could hopefully pay for a bigger hosting package Anyone got any experience with this?

OK complete newbie to external hosting here. We have setup an intranet in school http://servername:port We now have a public ip and staff can vpn in from home. I would like to make the intranet avaliable from home. We don't have isa - but do have a domain name we can use. It it simple enough just to get the domain hosting company to point the dns records to our server? Any help appreciated.

Ok I have Apache running fine and I am setting up various things on the server. The problem is I have set up virtual hosts and now seem to have to set up one for everything I install otherwise it just directs me to the first virtual host. Have I set something up wrong or is this just the way it is?

One of the websites I help to admin is currently stuck on a host who is pretty much holding the site to ransom and I'm wondering what our options are. The original server we had the site on had a control panel and FTP access that we could retrieve files but that server failed (you get the idea of the quality of the host) and the replacement one we were told "we don't provide a control panel as they're insecure" yeah right We've emailed requests numerous times for FTP access and a database dump but it's gone from "yeah I'll do it soon" to just being outright ignored now. Can Data Protection Laws help us in terms of getting hold of the data we own and pay a fee to have hosted or am I stuck with just spidering as much of the site as I can (it's a forum so lots of dynamic content which makes it more difficult) and accepting the database is a goner once the hosting agreement expires?

My son needs a website for his university portfolio which he is building from scratch. It won't have huge amounts of traffic and isn't that huge (currently 90Mby). He is concerned about security. Do you have any suggestions on where would be good to purchase both from on a student budget please? What pitfalls does he need to watch out for? Sorry for sounding like I know nothing; it's because I haven't a clue. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Brightbox Cloud, the UK's first true* IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) platform. FAQs Is this just for Ruby? No! you can run almost any operating system and therefore almost any type of web application you like. Which operating systems can I use in your cloud? You can run almost any operating system that supports Virtio (most do). We'll also be adding a "compatibility mode" for other operating systems soon. What are Zones? Zones are physically isolated datacentres, with multiple networking links between them. Traffic between Zones is routed via our private network and is not chargeable - so it's easy to create resilient applications with servers in two zones. Where are your Zones? We currently have two Zones in Manchester, UK - we plan to launch additional regions in separate geographical locations throughout Europe and the US in due course. What do you mean by "true" cloud? Offering VPSes at a single datacentre (even with an API) is, in our humble opinion, not a "cloud". There are actually very few existing "true" cloud providers - Amazon EC2 is, of course, currently the largest and most well known. Brightbox Cloud Beta

just posted this over on Twitter very useful. Test your RewriteRules for Apache mod_rewrite Russ

Hey All, Sorry if this is the wrong section but I was hoping to gather some feedback from as many people in education as possible on what they feel they wish their existing hosting, domain & DNS providers could do better. I don't want this to turn into a "X provider is terrible, use this one" type of thread but it's more to get an idea of what everyone feels is currently lacking in the hosting industry that would be a benefit to those in education. For example, I know some providers make it more difficult than it should be to support a .sch.uk domain name and also it seems finding a provider that offers an easy solution for everything (hosting, domain & DNS) near enough impossible. Personally I feel there's a lack of suitable solutions available and I'm interested if others have same opinion or not as I've been out of education for quite a while now!

I am currently rebuilding my mums website from scratch as the one I made previously doesn't really work and is broken and just a mess. I am rebuilding it in ASP.net C# as I have been teaching myself this and I can do it better than PHP which I have no idea about. At the moment she uses hostpapa for her website, email and domain name hosting. However they only support linux servers so she will need to move hosting providers soon. I am wondering if anyone knows of any Windows hosting sites that will provide email aswell, that isn't ridiculously expensive and is easy to manage etc. Thanks

I have a problem with timing -the webhost for my school website is finishing on Friday and currently I have nowhere to put it. The issue is that the school dont want to pay for a whole year when the website is currently in re-design and when finished will be hosted by the company doing the designing. This will hopefully be in the next few weeks. So can anyone suggest either very cheap hosting or somewhere where I can do it for about 3 months? Bit of a desperate situation here - partly my fault, partly not. *witch - ricocheting from crisis to crisis since 2001*

Our main school site is already up and hosted with another company, but the school also has an 'Enterprises' arm which mainly covers leasing of sports and event facilities to the public. I've designed a simple Joomla site which is ready to go, now need to decide on hosting. The current host charges £250 a year which seems a lot, so reluctant to go with them for this one too. We already have a domain registered with 1&1 so my first thought was just to go for the business hosting on there, as I've never had any problems with them before but the web is full of horror stories about them. Noticed VeloxServ and CS New Media mentioned on here, why are they recommended over others though? Also, what sort of level of hosting should I be going for? Reliability is key, but the website itself is very simple, and I'm not expecting millions of hits or anything

Can anyone recommend a good UK VPS host for some personal projects that I'd like to run? Need to start off relatively small and with the aim of growing

I'm poking around my shiny new Wordpress 3.0 install while wiating for web hosting support to get back to me. I've got issues with the uploads folder not working again and I'm not setting permissions on anything to 777! So I had a brainwave and I'm wondering if this will be safe: wp-content/uploads folder set to 766 (so Group and World can Read/Write and not Execute) .htaccess restricting uploads to JPG, PNG, GIF and denying PHP, HTML, HTM, SHTML, PL, JS Is that safe? I don't want people to randomly add files as happened to me before and a hacker's phising page got my last hosting account shut down a few years back. Not sure what I'd do for themes though? Also no Shell access.

Afternoon all, I'm looking at getting some new hosting for our school website and at the same time moving to an off site hosted email solution. Does anyone have any recommendations? Cheers Ross

After a very disrupted year with eukhost (avoid at all costs), I'm looking for a new host. Currently hosting about 10 sites and email using 10Gb of data but not a huge amount of bandwidth. Need unlimited mysql databases, domains and subdomains, cpanel, etc. Starting to get to the point where a reseller solution may be worth looking at too. Are VPS solutions worth looking at as well? Any suggestions?

I started my own VB forum as one of my many, I wonder if I can do this... projects. Anyway long story short I need a decent host with decent support that has RTMP enabled (for FlashChat6). Also needs around 5gb+ of space, 100gb+ of Bandwidth and cPanel (love cPanel), looking for one @ around £25-30 per month. Anyone know of such a host? preferably in the UK (to limit the 'hops') Also my current host says I can get RTMP if I get a VPS, but my *nix knowledge is most likely subpar (I'm happy copying shell code that someone else has written in a tutorial). Any recommendations for this? I found a decent how to install here - http://www.videochat-scripts.com/tag/rtmp/ and it seems easy enough...
