Can you try it on a chromebook plugged into the network socket? This would somewhat help to work out if it's sophos on your PCs, or if its some kind if internet filtering/firewalling further up the chain.

Sadly I would have to disagree with the above, 90% faliure rate on Acer chromebooks over the last 5 years, i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. Lenovo OR HP seem to do the job. Might even lean more towards HP nowadays ad the Gen4 lenovos are not as sturdy as they used to be. You may actually run into space issues if you have lots of play store apps allocated, as chrome o/s actually (stupidly) installs each app to the user profile so the more users that use each CB the more apps and space gets wasted. They are 1:1 devices first and formost and they have been designed like that.

Get a refurbished/used Dell Poweredge R740XD you can single or dual CPU 128 256 or 512 of ram and chock it full of 2.5" SSD drives.

Moving from fully ingrained Google/Chromebook to office is gonna be a backwards step for the teaching and learning. Oh well I guess someon else decided that it was worth taking the hit to become academised?

Pegagogy or not the choice here comes down you you either have a non touch screen chromebook or you don't have any chromebook at all. I've had to make tough choices to keep the 1:1 going here after covid as costs have spiralled. We're no longer getting chromebooks for £135 a pop. Touch screens were one of those tough choices. Frankly everyone wants a touch screen but no one really uses it that much apart from some edge cases (art etc). Don't be like some schools I know - we need touch screen we must have all touch screen blah blah, won't someone think of the pedagogogogooggy etc - ignored me completely bought a fleet of 300/500e's at great cost - and now they've got hundreds of chromebooks in cuboards in bits and gone back to chalk and talk in 75% of lessons wheras we are keeping hundreds of 100es up and running with £20 screens

We use web versions of outlook etc. When you create meeting in your or someone elses calendar you have a teams yes/no checkbox so can easily make a teams meeting and then everyone gets a teams invite etc. Use chrome browser across the fleet and it works decent. Frankly the full fat versions of outlook and teams are garbage and only seem to be going even further down hill the last few years.

I've got a few hundred. Wish they were 100e's to be honest as any screen damage = the chromebook written off as you cant get cheap spare touchscreen screens. Like I said above, avoid touchscreen.

Exam board software is some of the worst around. Good luck getting it all working in the new fangled intune cloud world. It might be back to paper.

To be honest due to never being able to afford particularly great PCs our DT dept has moved on to web based ones now Onshape Autocad online and Tinkercad. They had to move to some web based in Covid as everyone was using chromebooks - and they havent really moved back. The new W11 image doesnt have any of that old crap cad software on it any more. Happy days!

Just keep one small server there for the many things that don't play well with the cloud, Impero, Papercut, crappy exams software. The list is long. If you move totally to intune you'll be shooting yourselves in the foot in several areas.

She hasn't worked in IT long enough then - give her a stress ball and she'll have arms like popeye before long! No but seriously, can you get hydraulic or electric ones of somewhere? Might be worth a look sounds like making it more automated would help her (and you!)

See the exams manager/officer about it. It can be taken out of the exams budget on their orders. "I need for these pupils to sit exams" Exams budget is usually more than site and IT added together so take it from that massive pot.

You can push it out as a chrome extension within chrome? Make it mandatory and pinned in your google admin console.

We do't restrict it, but we do log it into a KS3, KS4 and KS5 departments so we have a rough idea what various key stages are using and can spot any sillyness. Also - they can only print when they are in IT suites - not from their chromebooks.

It does sound like antivirus to be honest, there must be something in a log somewhere! Can you add that folder to exclusions just in case?

You'll want to physically ask them if the policy covers 1:1 with under 18s ina school, otherwise your just guessing.
