We managed covid madness entirely with no printing. The teachers stil taught, the pupils stil learned. It confirmed exactly what i said all along for the last 10+ years, that we do not need to print at all. Sadly the laziness has set back in full force and were back to larger than pre covid volumes. SLT have done nothing to combat it despite my once a year protests. Realistically if the heateacher doesnt instruct the staff to not print and use google or whatever your fighting an unwinnable battle as grumbling about bulb hours per year in your line management doesnt actually have any effect on them up top as they dont actually give two hoots about bulbs or hours or trees. 1 million pages printed on 677,000 sheets of paper. 82% mono.

Maybe time to thnk outside the box - moving lock stock and two smoking barrels to chrome o/s has nevver looked so appealing (or so..possible..)

Hehe - it's all a game of chance. I don't disagree with you SSDs Virtualisation and Veeam are a godsend for reliability. But the chance of one disk failing is not the same as the chance of your server being down, wich is the actual important thing. If you have one disk the the chance of the disk failing is whatever it is, but if it does fail the chance of your system being down is 100% If you have 5 disks in Raid 5 the chance of one disk failing is 5 x higher than whatever the singe disk chance of failing above, BUT the chance of your system being down due to one disk failing goes down to 0% as the system can tolerate one disk failing and stay up. Therefore I will keep using antiquated RAID as it literally just reduces the chance of your sever going down.

No all PC stuff is hard wired and no one will every convince me otherwise.

I picked Win 10. I hate Win 11. I'd be happy with Chrome OS too though it wouldnt be any use for my gaming.

So..out of interest if you had a server fail would you never buy another server again and install everthing on the PCs instead? If your car broke down would you never buy another car? Just wondering as raid card faliure is pretty darn rare - never had one myself in 24 years of doing this.

Yep all understood and been there too in the past. It doesnt happen now, contracts always get paid even if theyre renewal date is in March. Just explain to finance that their silly school only made up for no reason rules and regs are gonna cost the school an extra bunch ££ - nothing else you can do really.

Aah good old finance departments. Just bare in mind that if you let your contract lapse they will charge you extra to get the contract back up and running. You'd be much better off paying the 300 or 400 quid now rather than letting it laps and incurring extra charges after April 1st. IMHO.

If your on a legacy contract like I am too, your getting Veaam for aboloute peanuts compared to everyone else. And you still want to save more money?? The support contract is only a few hundred quid a year it's well worth it just to keep veeam up to date whenever they find a major security issue? I would choose at least 10 other things first to save a few hunred quid a year on before I got anywhere near considering cancelling veeam support. I wasn't however aware that if your support contract lapsed, the product died. That is totally not cool if it's true.

My dad still seeks out smiths's to buy weird and wonderful magazines same as he's done for decades. As a "magazine" shop how can you really keep up with the times other than just diluting yourself to become any old shop maybe a vape shop would be more successful?

It would but youll be transferring overnight when no ones using it and you don't need to transfer the whole lot over night just the changes? Or even just copying over the weekend would be far better than nothing.

Cubase and Adobe are both nasty about needing to store files on the C Drive or network drives - I can't really think of any way using cloud storage that that's gonna work well?

Entrysign here, it's not perfect but the support is very good the few times I've used it I've had an engineer ringing or emailing me to get remote access same day and usually solved same day too. Cant argue with that!

The big security hotfix installed posgresql here automatically, I just let, it as I assumed that was something to do witht the security improvements?

Can you not use your LA's outgoing SMTP server instead?

I honestly think your much better off arranging with another local(ish) school to put a Synology NAS in to their sever room and keep Veeam backup copy backup on that. That satisfies everything needed regarding Buildings/Off Site/Security etc.

If you've reimaged the machine then that is quite strange as that should rule out anything on the actual PC. What about other SIMS users on that same PC?

Thats sad, Smiths is legendary - I can't see how renaming it is going to make things any better.
