Lenovo 300e 2nd Gen Hard Drive upgrade recomendations/supplier
PotNoodleTech replied to JazzFlute's topic in Hardware
I've got 1000 64GB models in a 1:1 setting, and have never run out of storage? Why do you need so much storage there is a setting in google admin console toforce everything to be stored in google drive rather than on the chromebook itself? That should be turned on anyway, as if a chromebook dies, the pupil loses nothing. Or is it just that you have hundreds of users using each device and the user profiles are building up? -
Feel like ParentPayGroup have taken me for a ride!

If theres one thing I have learned it is the longer you delay and delay the worse the contract situation gets as ESS are desperate to try and force-keep as many schools as possible so every time you sign a new contract your eventual exit gets far more difficult. -
Student late sign in writing back to SIMS

Our third party apps can write to AM/PM but not lessons. Must be some kind of licencing/tech issue no one seems to be willing to pay for. -

Yeh they just want you to take out finance so they can make commission. My dad wanted to buy a skoda cash when he retired and they wouldnt let him spend his cash as they were obsessed with trying to get him to sign a finance agreement. Crazy. Went 1 mile down the road and BMW were happy to take the cash. -

Fords are great as long as their 10 + year old ones - the new wet belt ones are abaoloutly garbage. It's literally built in 3 year obsolecence. Should be illegal. -
Sounds like you need to get your LM promited upwards ASAP - army style so they can do less damage

Hmm. Well suggesting "don't do anything new" is not really a way of improving these systems? I am just coming up with the things all schools need, literally every school in the country that maybe whould become part of the school management information system.

1k a day I would be expecting an absoloute expert who can smash through all the niggles in 1 day. Also I wouldnt be paying 1k a day as it surely should have been set up properly as part of the original install???

I think your gonna lose a shedload of perfromance if you go NVME to SATA as planned. You'd be better off going NVME into a Low profile PCIE adaptor as that's waaay faster than SATA. I think theyre on amazon fairly cheap.

Well I am not in either of those LAs but I would have moved to Bromcom years ago if they had catered for Wales back then. I am glad that things are moving forward (at quite a pace!!) I believe an MIS should cater for everything that all schools need. There are some systems not traditionally associated with the MIS that should be, as every single school in the country needs them or wants them: IT and SITE Helpdesk system - all built in - every member of staff is already in the MIS all day so why not use it to report any problems too. Visitor entry and possibly door/gate access. Why not? Every school has it. Every school needs it. Every school has to go off and buy multiple other packages and then find some way of linking them back to the MIS. Please just do it in the MIS. Lockdown software - this is a big one. Theres a big gap in the market for an outsanding lockdown system - why not build it in the MIS? Again this is something that every school needs and every school has to again go off and cobble together multiple systems. It would be so much easier to tick the safety boxes if it was built in. I can probably think of 5 more but I am in a rush

A car vs money scenario... Please help me make up my mind!
PotNoodleTech replied to AB_IT's topic in General Chat
Your on your own there mate. Rust is still the biggest killer of cars in the UK be it on the body or large expensive bolt on parts like subframes. Advancements in technogy have sadly been nullified by the constant beancounter cost cutting to make thinner steel thinner paint thinner clearcoat etc etc so it's ended up modern steel cars still rust pretty much just the same. -
Aah the good old RM Tech seminars - so good for networking and wellbeing but we never realised quite how good until its gone!!
-
RM used to be useful back when windows was useless at managing itself but nowadays there are so many other built in tools and third party tools that CC5 just eems a bit pointless. I am guessing it's just gonna be bog standard windows with like a fancy version of impero bundled on top. Can't see the pointof paying £20k a year for that.

[bromcom] SIMS to Bromcom migration - is doing in September stressful?
PotNoodleTech replied to JoeS's topic in MIS Systems
September is already usually very stressful for IT support and other Staff so it would not be my choice of months. -
Cool. So how many have failed within the support contract?

Google Chromebooks. Newtork Not avaialable
PotNoodleTech replied to sunny88's topic in Cloud Services
Could either be a WIFI problem or a internet filteirng problem (google has a bunch of websites that need to be unbanned for everything to work) If your WIFI and your LAN has the same filtering you can troubleshoot the above by plugging the chromebook in via a USB to CAT5/CAT6 adaptor. They are very handy for troubleshooting weird WIFI problems. -

Just make sure you keep * some* savings in the bank for a rainy day emergency fund ideally 3 months full running costs so like £5k to £10k should do most people. -

It's tough. Cars are a mugs game - all they do is take your money and throw it away in the bin. People would be incenced if they paid £50k towards their morgage but actually only £5000 came off the debt? But they do that with cars day in day out. I know people who's car rental payments are as much as their mortages. Completely insane. £50k down the drain. So - I sense that you already actually know the answer deep down, overpaying on your mortgage is one of the most financially clever things you can do so and the best investment by far avaialble nowadays. Keep doing that and screw the cars. £2000 bangers even if they only last 3 years each you've got good value out of that and a paid off house and probably early retirement all day long!!! -
Ooh how much does one of those run to (bare in mind we had to plead to get a soldering iron from amazon..)
