You need to dig out the last contract that you signed and read through that with a fine tooth comb. That would state the process for termination asnd that is the one you need to follow as they is the legally binding one you signed. Your gonna need a good legal team. Can your LA legal team help? Yeesh. This is the probem with cloud only in schools, there is so much badly written software that needs lan/server/shared drive letters. Does it need to be an actual server/full active directory? Can you not get away with installing on a workstastion and using a shared folder / file permissions with your existing cloud accounts? Yeh moved VMware to Hyper V about 10 years ago, miss Vmware but don't regret it for a second cost wise as even 10 years ago the costs for 3 hosts and Vsan were crippling. I am amazed you are still running/paying for it now! At the time i use Microsofts Virtual Machine migration tool (not sure if that's exacly what it was called). Not sure if it exists now. Your choice plenty of options for of hosts / san / nas / zfs / raid / etc.

Yes I am not fully aware of the specifics as I've always kept my legacy support contracts paid for and working here. You need to keep your support contract active or you risk extra costs to "get back in" or possibly being shoved onto one of the new £$fangled contracts.

No stay with the exact support licence you are on or they'll try and nudge you sideways into a cloudy more expensive one. The renewal before last they changed the "description" of the line item to something different. I told them to put it back to the licence agreement we were on before. They did. 8GB of ram is not great but shouldnt cause a PDF to hang - SSD could be the culprit you can get some very weird behaviour on old/worn out SSDs

Problem is it's not the IT people at fault or responsibility it's generally SLT deciding to spend the money having their morning breifings up the local golf club/hotel instead of buying some £300 computers. Nowt any of us can do to make up for that mentality that i see in 50% + of schools.

So as per usual if you do a crap job for a decade you get money thrown at you, if you do a good job you get 0 help.
