  1. Not sure your actually covered for installing on a VM at home, even for testing. All the SIMS Support providers have access to the information for installing SIMS from scratch, and the training DB isn't really much much help these days since it's over 7 years old and I can't think of any reason any of our new staff have needed to have any training in SIMS that could not be done on the live system. If it's something specific like Timetabling or Exams, then the staff go on the course for learning the modules.
  2. Sure it's not the 4 Electric Bike Riders of the Apocalypse these days?
  3. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087QFQW6F also work perfectly fine with the Dell 3190's as long as you turn on the UEFI network stack in the bios
  4. When you are on OVS-EES, you can use the Shared Computer Licensing if you have A1 Plus in 365 (which was free from Microsoft for schools, but could mean a few hoop jumping to get it enabled depending on your tenancy domain name). Think it also works if you have ProPlus assigned to your users if you only have A1. You can now get EES if you have an FTE over 100. Using Shared Computer Licencing, we've not noticed the 5 device limit when we've logged a whole IT suite on with the same account when doing training etc. That count is when a user downloads and installs it on a device itself (such as at home/mobile etc)
  5. If you use the CommandReporter to call the scheduled report, it can only export it as a csv or txt file. The xlsm only works when calling it within the main SIMS instance, since it generates the csv/txt file then launches Excel to read it and apply the macros (and if your only using OneDrive onDemand as your user storage, the Macros only works for the first report of the day)
  6. If you using the Office 365 Click to Run installer to make use of the A1 (or A1 Plus) licence, instead of using Office 2019 or 2021, then Shared Device Activation is the method to use for those users with internet connectivity allowed. We've not found a limit yet even with a generic account logged on to a whole suite of computers when doing training. For those accounts that have no internet access, then you are in a bit of a quandary. You could set it so those accounts only have access to the MS Activation site, and in 365 only enable the Office Apps section of the licence and not Exchange so it can be activated, otherwise if it's specific stations, then using the LSTB 2019/2021 versions of Office that don't have user licencing might be the better choice
  7. My solution was to set the deployment up in SCCM as a script, so we have a cmd file that runs the MSI file, then copies over the config file to the local computer.
  8. Yep, so we got 115 for our staff, and then that got us nearly 4000 for the students included
  9. We went down the route of getting the A3 Enterprise Mobility and Security addon for our existing OVS-EES agreement (around £7-£8 per FTE) which we assigned to our staff so we get Conditional Access MFA, inTune, and also access to the MS ApplicationProxy. It is this we are using to provide access for our staff to our RDS setup, so users have to authenticate with Office 365 in the first instance (so MFA is processed if required) and then authorised users get the Application visible along with the rest of the Office 365 Apps (such as Word etc)
  10. We create class teams at the start of the year, and they are synchronised daily by a report exported from SIMS and a PowerShell script I made (you don't need 3rd party apps if you have a reasonable grasp of PowerShell) Some departments have also used the dedicated Sharepoint sites we've setup so who year resources/schemes of work etc are on there, and the Teams storage is uses purely for that class for additional work, homework, remote teaching etc. While our users do have OneDrive configured for their own storage, we've not setup any additional librarys in OneDrive on Demand as it's not really needed. If students are "following" the subject Sharepoint, it's available via the Office application File dialog (same as Onedrive). Getting users used to not using File Explorer to access resources, but rather from within the application or web site takes a bit of time though.
  11. Have you tried opening it up to disconnect the battery from the main board, then reconnecting it. Seemed to work on one of ours recently
  12. I don't know, based on the experience of moving from Schoolcomms to ParentPay, I don't hold much hope for what functionality they might put into a cloud version of SIMS, since the ParentPay product seems to be a huge step backwards in functionality than it's sister company of Schoolcomms. But anyway it wouldn't have been so bad had ESS said, that this will be the last 1 year renewal you can do, then switching to 3 years from 2023 as that at least gives time for looking at options and tendering etc, and not just a couple of months out of the blue.
  13. Yes you can remove them as they are deleted
  14. Well you can't really class SIMS as a cloud service, even with their RDP session
  15. You can force it to run on a mailbox straight away with the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant powershell command. Very handy when your wanting to get it setup for existing users, or change settings to make sure it's working without waiting for the normal sync process to take effect
  16. Ours asked for Wifi Access, which had already provided, however the lead inspector ended up using her own hotspot since we block VPN connections over our BYoD network, so although she could authenticate, the VPN couldn't connect to access their systems. This wasn't an issue for the other inspector who didn't have a VPN on their device. I've had no other requests for IT access (it's been a quite couple of days )
  17. We have a powershell script that runs hourly during the day that checks for any student accounts that does not have their Address book policy set, which updates it to the correct one and also sets that account to use a student mailbox policy we have as well, mainly so that any new accounts we create. we used to use the script for assigning licences as well before they brought in the Group membership feature in Azure. The Student address list in the example above only includes User mailboxes (so no rooms/resources etc hence the recipient Type) and only if the Office value in the users details is "student". You can have as many different Address List types as you want which you can use to create your required policy. The GAL for students is then defined based on the information I want in it. When I did our way back in 2015/16 I followed this guide from MS https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/educloud/2013/04/15/alumni-address-book-policy-in-office-365-education/
  18. We have several GAL's and Mailbox policies setup, so that our Students only get a mailbox with fellow students and Teachers, and not the support staff and governors. When student e-mail accounts are created, we assign them the specific Address book Policy. Set-Mailbox -Identity $user.UserPrincipalName -AddressBookPolicy "ABP_Students" You can have as many GALs and Address book polices as you wish based on your settings. For us with 5 schools, we are planning to have 10 or more GAL's configured. 1 for each school for students and the Teachers of that site. 1 for each school site for the Governors so they only have access to their own address and staff and 1 for the central staff who have access to all the Staff across the MAT Example of the Address Lists currently assigned to our Student Addressbook Policy AddressLists : {\AL_Students, \AL_Teaching_Staff} GlobalAddressList : \GAL_Students RoomList : \AL_Student_Resources OfflineAddressBook : \OAB_Students PS N:\> Get-AddressList -Identity "AL_Students" Name DisplayName RecipientFilter ---- ----------- --------------- AL_Students Student Address List ((RecipientType -eq 'UserMailbox') -and (Office -eq 'Student'))
  19. Have you tried calling the python file something other than turtle.py since it's a known module and you can't have files with the same name as inbuilt modules?
  20. Must admit, once adjusting the bios one so they can boot from USB NIC, not had much of a problem with them. Make sure you get the driver pack that should be on their site if you find you have some unknown devices still.
  21. For some of our's we had to enable the Network Stack Driver Support for it to boot from the StarTech Adaptor, but others it was fine without updating it.. different batches had different BIOS settings it seems. However from USB drive with installation media it should be fine and should pick up from the F7 boot menu. It's use USB NIC it's picky about
  22. Looking forward to season 3 if it's going ahead. It's actually quite a good series however keep expecting Daveed to break out in song since he was in Hamilton.
