Before i used AD Connect I put 'Pupils 2016' in to Department for our current year 11s say. Then you can create a display filter which filters by that name.

I was getting this error becuase Discovery wasn't given the SQL port number like SIMS picks from the connect.ini. Discover then goes about trying every port it can before giving up. Maybe something to look at? Here's my notes on it: Had to edit the following config file, putting the port number in the SQL path. C:\ProgramData\Discover\Discover.Designer.Desktop. exe.local.config

My first suggestion would be to plan your upgrades from the top down. You servers should be at the top, everything comes back to them (Or at least it should) so they should be the first thing to be upgraded. Then look at network connectivity before finally moving on to workstations and end users. It’s all well and good having brand new IWB's and desktops but if your servers down they’re useless. As for what you buy, I would be looking at some form of shared storage and multiple host servers. You can always keep one of your youngest servers currently as a physical DC. I’ve heard people talk about all in one systems were the host server has shared access to storage all in one chassis. No experience myself. We have two main host servers but no shared storage. It means we can’t do live transfers but I wasn’t able to start from scratch so this solution fit.

It checks for an audio device. We have this problem with HP desktops as they don't have built in speakers, so you have to connect headphones. Just wish they would tell you that rather than 'error has occurred'

I couldn't get my head round the calculations for Azure, even the calculator wasn't that close. I found the best way is to sign up for the £125 credit (Lasts for 30 days) and try it for a month. I did find the month was spent getting the thing working (Likely more down to me getting my head around it) so I didn't manage to get much out of it, but meant I had a month to get it right. Now I've nearly completed my first paid month and its looking like just over 1TB + SIMS Database + DPM Database is £45 a month. For me a big advantage is you get Azure Backup Server (DPM) as part of your monthly fee. This gives me 30 days of onsite backups, which 99% of the time will cover recovery jobs plus backups for my apps etc which don't need offsite backups. As for VM's I'm still just using a local backup (Windows Server) but I'm going to talk this over with management to see how fast a recovery they want if the whole place goes up in flames etc.

I'd like to correct this, you can have a virutal DC and hosts on the domain as long as you have background policy updating enabled (IE not disabled as its default on). Hosts will check in with the DC once its up and running to get any new policies. If you can't authenicate then you fall back to the local admin account (IE in a failure etc). Most people including myself have a pshyical DC but really as long as you have things setup right its not required.

Using Xibo here, took a bit to get setup and I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the displays looking right for me. The end result however is very good with content from Twitter, BBC News and local weather along side school information via a powerpoint saved as a video.

I've been running a Azure Backup trail and now converted to pay as you go. After problems with the Azure Backup Agent I switched to the DPM varient on its on server. I was wanting to do this anyway but meant a bit more setup to trial. So we now do B2D2C all in one application. I'm still not 100% on the costs but the above £38/TB/Month is looking about right, depends what you backup. Once the first backup is completed (Took us around 4 days over a 75Mbps link for around 1TB) you only upload changes so backups are pretty quick. The main advantage I saw was I could replace by B2D software (Backup Exec) with Azure Backup Server (DPM) without additional licence costs. I'm backing up none user data (App installers & drivers etc) locally only. We ask Microsoft to put us on invoicing, not had the first yet so can't comment on whats produced but its not paper I know that.

Yep pretty easy. Download from here: Free Spiceworks Download - IT Management for Tablets & Mobile Devices You’re best installing it on its own VM. I would suggest 4 VCores and 4GB RAM. Install Win Server then put Spiceworks on top. The wizard will setup regular scans for you. You can pull users from AD if you have the email field populated. You can edit the look of your portal (Although I suggest you install some plugins to help with this, by default its quite limiting). Then just point your users to the portal and your away. You can setup outgoing emails and incoming (Email to ticket). You can even setup remote installations if you have sub sites or other schools you look after. We have this setup here so any tickets get passed back to the central helpdesk, along with all the device info.

Works on the side too with Windows 10.

Spiceworks here, the onsite version. Does inventry and helpdesk all in one package. Very useful tool. They now offer a online version of the helpdesk, but for me having the inventry tied in (With auto searches) means when a staff member logs a ticket you get all the device info with it. EDIT: Also a shout for Spiceworks Network Monitor, live monitoring of servers and switches.

I've just setup Azure backup today as a trail. You can get £125 by signing up to Azure (Even through I already use it Office365 AD). I'm going to see how far this gets us. The Azure Backup Server is very interesting. Its DPM without the tape backup, but then you have Azure. Currently testing with just the Agent on one server, but moving to this DPM varient looks a good option, if the price is right.

Could I ask people to either post or PM me who you use for leasing / papercut support? The i-options thing is very interesting!

When using the /s command it still comes up asking to 'Accept & Install'?

Done pretty much exactly the same today as well so would also be looking for a solution.

So an update on my issue. Huge thanks to AXE for private messaging me with help multiple times. I had two issues in the end which I'll explain here. First the install issue. We tracked down the problem to the app-inventor installer (Google one) bringing up a file security warning when run as part of the MSI. This is why the MSI hung. I added my DFS to a GPO at the domain root which added the file path to IE's site to zone assignment list as an intranet site. I did this on both user and computer configuration although I believe its the computer one which applies here. Once installed I then had a problem with getting the companion app to load, the App Inventor website would see the emulator running but couldn't open the app installed on it. AXE said this was firewall and proxy related but my firewall was disabled and so was the proxy. However I had put it in the config file when creating the MSI. Removing the proxy from the 'RunEmulator.settings.xml' solved the issue. I now have the emulator working on pupil accounts, with no command line access or C drive access. IE & Chrome using a proxy.pac to get the proxy server. A long job to sort but again big thanks to AXE for the program and help.

No it doesn't do anything. I guess as its silent the error isn't displayed.

Any help would be really useful. Tried I few things but always get the same error. Would love to use your tool otherwise I'll have to give students command line access.

I've tried on a Window 8.1 and Windows 7 desktop. Windows 7 has .Net 4.5.2 installed and Windows 8.1 has 3.5 installed as well. I've made sure all the files are unblocked but still getting the same problem.

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm trying to install AXE's tool but when I run the setup.msi I get a .net error of 'The application could not be started'. Any ideas?

I've heard if you go Sky Fibre you have to use their router or ring them up and give them the MAC address of the router you are using. Seems they are doing some kind of MAC filtering. Never heard of a problem on ADSL.

Take a look at the Toshiba U920T, one of my schools has had one on trial and very impressed with it.

After seeing how these things are used in school...well how little they are used. I would only say one thing. Buy cheap. What your really looking for a webcam on a stick. I've found the TTS ones to do the job just fine for how much they are used. Easi-View Visualiser for Schools

Have a look at this: Import devices into Spiceworks from a CSV file - Spiceworks If you created a report in Spiceworks with the same layout as the CSV file in this how to, you should be able to export everything, updated it and re import. Use the -m option so it updates devices not recreate them. Only thing you need to look up is the column headings for the database for costs etc. Heard SQL Lite extension in Firefox can be used?
