Take a look at Autodesk, they offer free licences to education and while it might still be 'blucky' you can't complain at free.

Think of Azure as the server, with Office365 as the software on top. Its just a cloud based service running from Azure. From your point of view you use Azure AD which sits behind Office365 and holds all your users, groups etc. I'm currently using Azure for offsite backups using the 'Azure Backup' service. Its working pretty well althought the costs do add up as your pay as you go, so if you store (like us) things for years it adds to the cost. However it also means you can directly affect the price by reducing the amount you store rather than paying for 1TB of backup for x amount of years. First thing you can do is sign up to a Azure Trail (Even though you already have it). It gives you £125 for 30 days and means you can setup and test the backup before it costs you anything. Also a nice feature is you get Azure Backup Server which is a slightly cut down version of DPM. It means you can backup to disk onsite and pick what gets backed up to Azure. Handy for things like Apps & Drivers you might want to backup locally but not store offsite. Onsite backups are limited to 30 days, but thats enough for most none data backups.

Here the costs are: 1/5 black and white and 6p colour with a discount for double sided. Students don't have access to any laser or inkjet printers, only staff do but for this they pay double. For allowances we do: Students - 50p per half term (If they run out they pay) Staff - Use 'shared accounts' which are departments. The money on them comes out of thier department budget and was based off past usage. Reset again every half term. We've had this system in place since half term. Very pleased with the effect, some departments however just carry on regardless. Its there money at the end of the day so lets see what happens when it runs out! PS as above, its based on a follow me printing system where both staff and students must claim jobs. Saves a lot.

With that GPO your fine, its if you have removed Authenicated Users from the security filter and put something else in its place. This is when you have a problem and need to add either Domain Computers or Authenicated Users to the security tab. I was second @JATSO stance that if the person going on leave hasn't put the information in a shared area (Presuming you have one) they shouldn't get access. I have the stance that a personal area is for files relating to you, not files you create for your teaching subject. When a staff member leaves those files get removed, not moved to another staff member.

Using Spicework Network Monitor here as we also use Spiceworks Helpdesk & Inventory. Works quite well but does use a lot of resources. Can't comment how it compares to others as this is the only thing I've used for 'live' montoring. Just make sure its on its own VM so you can limit the amount of RAM it can use up and not affect other services.

Spiceworks hear and the vast amount of jobs go through it. So helpful to look back on what you did last time. Also, it means you can't forgot to look at a job. Staff have a shortcut on there desktop to the user portal to report the faults. Its also used to track purchases.

I showed our exams officer this software yesterday, they love it! I'm now doing some more testing but its exatctly what we are looking for. My only suggestion is when you enable double line spacing, please can it be shown in the program rather than just on print. Otherwise, keep up the great work! You'll make a lot of peoples lives a lot easier.

I didn't stop the services when I did mine, but not sure if the tool itself did. I booked two days to do it but it only took about 2 hours. Meant I could do a load more jobs. Even if the DB doesn't work, at least you know the OS migrates without error.

You can always capture the SIMS server while its being used and try boot it up without a network connection? That way it can't do any damage. Proves the process works etc. I've doen this with my SIMS server. Had some problems with master boot record etc but nothing you can't fix with google and WinPE.

We were told it wouldn't delete them if there was a large amount. So to get around this we created a policy which would deleter after 3 years, leave for 1 month then change to 2.5 years.. etc. Took a while and some accounts were still to large to clean but we're now down to 30 days.

Is it posible that this is the Windows version of Office 2016 download from Office365? Say allow education staff and students to upgrade to Windows 10 after July for free?

I guess you've tried switching the monitor on first, then waking to see if its the monitor? Also can you ping the PC when the screen is black or turn caps lock on and off? Would give you an idea if the OS was loaded or not.

Anyone got an update from SOPHOS about this? I've not really seen slow login times on the whole but it has been mentioned a few times.

For us yes, we got quoted 2K a year for Redstor and that would only cover 2 servers and offered no local backup. We would need to buy another bit of software to backup our apps and ISO's etc localy. Azure takes a bit of getting your head round but now I've got it setup and working it just looks after itself. I have a seperate VM running the Azure Backup Server software which means I can backup any server and resource across my domain (And domain trust, not tried it yet) and backup to our existing NAS boxes. I'm still running BE but the aim is to archive BE and move solely to Azure. One portal for all our backups. Tip: Just remember to backup the DPM database as well.

I'm backing up just over 1TB (Uncompressed) via Azure which comes out at 780GB compressed (Which is what you pay for). Our first month was just over £50. I'm using the Azure Backup Server (Cut down DPM) which means I can backup locally more often through the day (Keep for 30 days on a NAS). I'm also going to backup our apps folders as well but only locally to the NAS. I currently run BE as well but Azure will replace it in time once fully setup and tested.

I did this in the Azure Backup Server (DPM) software, nothing extra needed.

We backed up just over 1TB over our 75Mbps connection and it took around 3 days. We limited the transfer speed during the day so it didn't really affect our connection. After that it runs in under an hour most nights (One backup a day). However every now and again it does a full backup again. For us this doesn't matter, we use the Azure DPM to backup locally more often so its only the offsite backup which might get more than 24 hours out of date. I look at recovery times like this, if you've lost your onsite backup your in a bad way. So waiting 3 days for a recovery to take place (You could restore key bits first faster) isn't going to be bad compared to rebuilding or buy servers etc.

Our is set on the SQL server properties. I'm not sure why it would matter about the UAC but was worth a try as the error was the same as ours.

You'd think someone would offer a 2U POE switch which is shalow and with a nice big slow fan. Mind you, if your cabinets are out like mine there packed anyway.

I would check you can get parts for your servers. That’s the key thing if you plan on keeping them. The PSU's seem to be the first things you struggle to get and they often fail first (Hence all the stock has gone). As for my hosts. I use Hyper-V with local storage, using the 'Shared nothing' replication method. As long as the servers are similar in CPU features you can setup replication on a per VM basis between the hosts. You don't get live failover, but if a host goes down you can power up the VM on the second host. Backup of the VMs is done using Windows Server Backup on each host. We have a NAS (RAID5 3x 4TB) which has 2x 3TB ISCSI disks on it. Windows Server back points to this. However we don't use this for data (Which is stored on one physical and one VM). Data backup is done by Azure Backup which runs from another VM. 30 days of back to a NAS then online backup for up to 6 years. PS: Also check is Server 2012 R2 is supported on your hardware, its likely not which could force you hand.
