My name is Mark and I've been working in educational IT for sixteen years now. I have two kids: a 14 month old son and a four year old daughter. I'm photographer on the side and an avid car enthusiast. Aside from spending time with my family, I love wrenching on cars - especially old school Chrysler V8's.

Apprenticeship is for a years duration and I enjoy almost everything about the current role.

Support in Brooklyn NY I was hired to teach art and technology but was also told I would be the I.T. support person since they don't have anyone to do that(have A+ license). It's good to have another member from "over the pond" You're going to have your hands full combining teaching and the technician's job... you can't plan the IT problems in advance like your lessons. I can't imagine any school I have seen in the UK being able to cope with an arrangement like yours.

I set up an email address for them to email me, didn't work. Now I go around each day with a clipboard asking if they have any issues. There are only eight teachers so eight smart boards. Right now I have one that has a color wheel issue, another one the teacher claims the fan is going out, etc. I have 20 Lenovo desktop all-in-one computers in the technology lab, they are in good working order thankfully, have never opened one of those up so not sure how hard they are to fix.

Can I suggest that you go to your line manager and point out that this is NOT best use of your time. You are employed in the first place as a teacher. The whole point of you and the school being there is to educate children. You have taken on the technician role, but it works both ways. You are not psychic, none of us can recommend a reliable crystal ball to help you, so the principal needs to direct staff to communicate with you rather than expect you to run round wiping their noses for them. mikeprice Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 I would also suggest that you get a helpdesk system installed asap - Spiceworks would do just fine Then get your line manager to insist that all IT problems are reported by email - which will raise a ticket on the help desk. This gives a way of you and your line manager seeing what is outstanding at any time - and of tracking the problems The reason for this is twofold a) protect yourself - if someone complains that xxx has been broken for ages and ages - then it can be tracked - normally it will have been reported 5 mins ago - but it stops you being blamed - and once this gets around then the problems will be reported properly b) a log of ALL problems will show if the IT workload is too high and you need help/more dedicated time oh - and good luck

I've done work in the past for another Blackpool based firm called CompTech. Before this I have worked at Baines School and Sixth Form and Montgomery High in Blackpool. Since working with CompTech and Western, I have been in over 60 different schools around Cumbria, Lancashire, Blackburn and Merseyside LEA's. Facing different issues from and with CLEO, BTLSL, Blackburn Borough and not recently, Blackpool Borough. I have probably laid my hands on at least 2,000 unique iPads over my time! Looking forward to being an active member again!
