Yeah, we’ve had one similar. Two entire year groups and three staff out for two weeks because of the selfish and thoughtless actions of one idiot parent. Unbelievable.

Similar situation here, parent tested positive last week and continued to send their kids in, both kids test positive over the weekend. The family didn't inform the school, we only found out because one of the students put it on social media on Sunday night, prompting a flood of calls from concerned parents on Monday morning. We now have an entire year group out and a single form from another year.

I just don't understand people.

Presumably after they tested positive, they were contacted by test and trace to say that the kids should be isolating? In which case it's against the law not to self isolate. In which case send the police round.

Unless Test and Trace didn't do their job... In which case send the police round to them?

Not sure if this will need its own thread but

We were just talking about Christmas - and and the news announced that The Sun - yes, I know - says that there is discussion about having 5 days of Christmas where you are FREEEEEEE

Hmmmm

anyway - we were wondering what we will do

We normally go to wife's son's house and have dinner with him, his partner and the 2 kids - but she will have a very new baby by then. Normally they like having us there because we can distract the kids while they do stuff

This time I think she is overwhelmed - and very worried about the baby etc etc etc - so she has said they are going to her Mum's this year

so that's probably out

We would probably be invited to wife's sister's house - but it will be crowded if we go there as she has 3 grown kids - plus their partners (OK boyfriend in the case of the 18 year old girl) - and we would probably end up having dinner on our laps in the lounge due to lack of room

company would be good - environment not so much

and anyway - her husband is waiting for an operation and has diabetes - so not sure what they will think - although as they seem susceptible to every conspiracy theory out there who knows!! (that have not mentioned Qanon yet - we are waiting!!)

so - plan C - go out to a pub for Christmas dinner - just checked - all the ones we like (or liked before lockdown) are closed or are saying they are booked up - which could mean several things

so that is out

and anyway - no sure if that is safe - would get a nice dinner - but might die - swings and roundabouts and all that

so dunno

we have plan z - small turkey crown already in the freezer so we can just stay at home and have dinner here

with or without visits to family - or having them coming here - during the morning

I guess we will wait and see and make a decision as late as possible

what are others thinking???

a) what is allowed

b) what we think is safe

1) are you sure it was the Sun? Cos ‘discussion’ has 3 syllables...

2) can’t and won’t tell anyone else what they should do, but after the year that we’ve all had, I’m going to make damn sure that this Christmas is the best that I can make it for me and my lad, and s*d everyone else! If you try to please everyone, then the people least likely to enjoy it will be you and your wife.

And yes, I’m a mean Scrooge, etc, etc...

Leave the alcohol based hand gel out for Santa, otherwise he'll be Superspreader Santa

30 min test given to all staff and pupils on monday, stay outside until results are in. Come to school Mon-Thu, that way if you get it after Monday you won't pass it on. Then do school at home for the other week. Have the other half of the students come in then.

If you get it you'll be clear by the time you come back for another test 14 days later.

£4/test, so £76/person/school year, that's not much

a) what is allowed

b) what we think is safe

a) Who knows? Anyway, 5 days for most won't include healthcare workers, delivery drivers, most shop workers, police and fire peeps - and all the usual exceptions.

b) Who knows? In our "circle" we have one person who complained about our house not being "baby-friendly" (because, you guessed it, we don't have a baby) but doesn't think lockdown rules apply to her or her child so what most of us may consider safe is put at risk by others.

I'd normally have to go to look after Aged P many miles/hours away, but his carer has volunteered as apparently he spends a lot of time asleep anyway. Haven't seen him for months, and feel I should go anyway - but (although I am currently getting weekly tests and am so far clear) the lack of common sense from co-workers and obviously pupils adds to the risk.

I suspect we'll be just our household as Bonus Daughter #1 is currently planning to visit fiancé's folks - but this could change any time up to and including Christmas Morning as she's one of those that doesn't like to be constrained by plans.

Actually, I'm probably the wrong person to answer as too many years in retail have put me right off Xmas and I'm not a huge "family" chap. Back when I was single one of my best Christmases was when I turned down all invites and spent the day looking after my mate's cat in my flat and got 2 micro meals (one never big enough) and slumped in front of the TV with booze. No stress, no-one to have to keep happy/amused. Obviously not what many would think of as "Christmas", though!

Link: Test and Trace chief Dido Harding prompted to self-isolate by NHS COVID-19 app [The Register]

There's nothing quite like eating your own dog food, as Test and Trace chief Baroness Dido Harding has learned after being instructed to self-isolate by the NHS COVID-19 contact-tracing app overnight.

In a tweet this morning, Harding said she was feeling well, and that there's "nothing like personal experience of your own products." A screenshot posted to Twitter shows Harding with nine days remaining in her isolation period...

As I seem to be the only one actually *hoping* for lockdown over Christmas, so I can spend the day doing whatever I want rather than compelled to visit family, I'll keep quiet now...

26 staff off today due to sickness or self-isolation!!!!

Weird, it's as if there's a pandemic going on and everyone should be staying at home.

Nov 17th, highest number of deaths so far again, 10493. UK now has more deaths per capita than USA, deaths have been rising since the start of Sep, 7 day moving average of 425 per day

Sounds like bliss!

...apart from the micro-meals; I'd have to cook something really tasty for myself.

...and the cat. I like cats, but I'm highly allergic.

...and the slumping with booze would have to follow a good, long dog-walk, either on the beach or somewhere in the countryside.

...other than that, it's ideal.

If I don't go visiting friends/family it will be first time in 25 years I have spent in my home town/county.

So hopefully things will ease, I don't think I will be going away if it is against the recommendations/lockdown or if I feel ill. I'm not so much worried about myself catching but more worried about spreading. I had a mild bout back in April and still not back to pre-symptom fitness, would not want to pass it on to anyone else.

It's going to be a bit of a double-whammy with people mixing with one circle over Christmas, and then with a different circle over New Year. What better way to say goodbye to 2020 than with a drunken bawdy sing-song superspreader party?

It's been a week since I started showing symptoms, and honestly it's been awful. I'm relatively young and fit, and it has really knocked me on my arse...

Timeline for anyone interested:

Wednesday night - slight cough

Thursday - still coughing a bit, developed a fever in the evening. Severe headache began.

Friday - cough disappeared. Still feverish. Severe headaches.

Saturday - Began to lose taste and smell. Headaches continued. No energy.

Sunday - Lost all taste and smell. Headaches continued. No energy.

Monday - Headaches continued. No energy.

Tuesday - Headaches stopped. Still no energy. New cough and wheezy chest.

Wednesday - A bit more energy today. Cough and wheezy chest is worse, mostly when I'm lying on my back.

I'm hoping I'm past the worst of it now. My wife is about 4 days behind me so hopefully she isn't affected by it as much.

This marries up to what I went through back in December, but most people won't entertain the idea of it being in the country that early...

I had an awful 'cold' at the start of the year. I couldn't shake it.

I was eventually clear of most of the effects after about a month and a half.

I don't recall loss of smell/taste but I do recall severe aches, made worse when coughing.

Why not have dinner at home but perhaps visit family morning and or afternoon?

We are supposed to be having dinner at my sons as my other two are going to the in-laws this year. But at the table will be daughter-in-laws mum who has just had very major op (see cool things) and will be very vulnerable. So I suspect one pair will go for dinner, and one for tea.

Not sure about seeing the rest of the family - as you say, a last minute decision. But it is going to be very hard to get train tickets etc for those who do need to travel to see family
