paulkerton Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 Funny, that, because last I checked, aerosol transmission was actually the bit we made a law about... And yet it's the bit people are most up in arms about, calling masks "muzzles" and generally behaving very stupidly about. 1
Garacesh Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 I think massive failure was just trust on people's common senses - problem with that it is just not that common. I work part time in a pub - I can tell you, people don't need much to start shaking hands and come closer to each other, than they should. I hate seeing people are just being blamed for raise in cases - when we were encourage to go to eat out, go to pubs, go to offices etc. Restaurants I can at least understand the thinking behind, people don't really tend to mingle outside their own party that much in a restaurant. Pubs was a terrible idea, though. I appreciate certain industries are being damaged heavily by lockdowns but we have to think of the greater good. As for today's news.. "If, and that's quite a big if, but if that continues unabated, and this grows, doubling every seven days... if that continued you would end up with something like 50,000 cases in the middle of October per day. They have simultaneously given anyone sensible enough to listen incredible cause for concern, and those too dumb or complacent enough to not care a reason to continue disregarding the official advice. 1

In all seriousness though, all pubs should be mandated to be table service only. No barflies. No mingling outside your group. Do so, and it should be barred for life, quite frankly. 1
Andrew_C Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 They have simultaneously given anyone sensible enough to listen incredible cause for concern, and those too dumb or complacent enough to not care a reason to continue disregarding the official advice. As they have been doing from Day 1. It should, by now, be obvious that we reacted late, and ineffectively. We should have quarantined anyone coming in, especially from Wuhan and northern Italy. We ARE STILL NOT checking incoming travellers, half****ed measures were introduced in June.
Garacesh Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 (edited) The greater good ... NGL I toyed with the idea of hotlinking the text to that image I don't know where I stand on the idea of the 2nd lockdown. Several economies absolutely will not survive it. There will be many people losing jobs because of it. But so too would lives be saved. I'm not convinced we have any other options. The British public at large aren't doing anything to prevent the spread, and the incompetence (and inconsistency) of the measures thus far aren't helping either. Unfortunately I think we're at the point now where someone (or several) 'important' has to die. World leaders, celebrities, etc. And then maybe people will take it seriously. Not that I wish death on anybody, but the warnings and the figures clearly aren't working. Edited September 21, 2020 by Garacesh
pooley Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 So my county (Bridgend) is going into lockdown as of 6pm tomorrow. unenforceable rubbish. Local lockdown People will not be allowed to enter or leave these areas without a reasonable excuse, such as travel for work or education; People will only be able to meet people they don’t live with outdoors for the time being. They will not be able to form, or be in, extended households; All licensed premises will have to close at 11pm; Everyone over 11 will be required to wear face coverings in indoor public areas – as is the case across Wales.

There will be many people losing jobs because of it. But so too would lives be saved. Economy ain't gonna do so hot when 3% of the population dies, either, and a significant portion of those who survive are left with lingering health-effects. I've had chronic fatigue syndrome from a virus before, and it was no fun whatsoever. It sounds like it's not an uncommon lingering effect of COVID-19 already, and god knows what long term damage it does to the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. The economy is screwed either way. But at least one way, fewer people die. 3

I am most concerned about people not quarantining propropely and the current shortfall in Track and Trace and testing. These seem to be essential to me if we are to preserve any aspects of the economy. To get people to quarantine properly they must be paid and supported. 1

Those are rubbish, most people go to their local pub, and what time does it normally close? 2 pubs near me (E. Sussex) both close at 11 pm. And people meeting, it will still take place, as this rule will probably be ignored. How this can be even called lockdown?
Andrew_C Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 Those are rubbish Ahh... but if things don't improve BoZo can blame the locals.
Davit2005 Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 Was in 2 pubs on Saturday 6pm to 1am Sunday First pub was not doing any checks or recording contact info to start with but noticed they started checking people around 8pm, ordering was at bar with social distancing measures in place but drinks brought to table. All tables were separated with max 6 at each. Second Pub we gave contact info but there were like 5 small groups in there, it is a huge Weatherspoons and all tables separated by plastic shields. I'm surprised it was open so late TBH.

Although at least they've gone with 'members only' for a while now, which means essentially just the couple of streets nearby. Still not great. But better. blame the locals. Why, what did @localzuk do now? 1
Andrew_C Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 Interesting - just been to Sainsbury for supplies for science. EVERYONE in a mask. Most social distancing, except where the layout makes this impossible (entrance/exit conflit)

Most social distancing, except where the layout makes this impossible (entrance/exit conflit) Our local good for masks, not so much social distancing. They keep doing announcements to let shoppers know that some staff and customers may have conditions that preclude social distancing - I wish they'd say what this condition is, because it seems to have infected most of the people in there. 1

"Mind the gap".
mikeprice Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 Apparently our glorious leader (other terms are available) is going to address the nation tomorrow at 8 p.m. Oh good still - mean the 'local lockdown' round here will now be shared with everyone still waiting to see how they will make people actually stick to the rules
mikeprice Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 (edited) Interesting thing Wife's son is a manager in the theatres at the local hospital - very well respected - just got significant promotion - fully qualified clinical person kinda busy for the last few months - as you can imagine his partner is currently pregnant - but only for a few more months and their 2 kids have recently gone back to school anyway - he comes home from work last week and she is coughing, sense of smell is reduced and everything tastes of cardboard so he rings up and books her a test and informs work he can’t come in until the test comes back - because of the obvious so she goes in for the test person booking people in asks why she think she needs a test errr - pregnant - partner of critical worker in ICU and theatres AT THAT HOSPITAL and with mild symptoms NAH - not serious enough and who is he anyway and why does he think he is important enough to just book a test for his partner REALLY who in the name of $deity do you think is looking after the people who are going to be turning up with Covid-19 in a week or so????? and do you REALLY think it is a good idea to have them expos all the current ICU and Theatre patients to the virus tomorrow ???? so he demanded the name and rang up to check that was OK apparently she got the test and it was clear just little one sharing his cold with Mummy stiil - nice that he is learning to share Edited September 22, 2020 by elsiegee40 4
Andrew_C Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 The person on the phone taking the booking is a minimum-wager reading a script. If you try to go 'off script' they are lost. 1
the_quick Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Again problem with outsourcing to private company, instead of NHS. There are already glimpses what will be announced tonight. Pubs will shut at 10pm, only table service, groups no bigger than 6 (can be from 6 different households? ) and work from home if you can. Really not much change imho, I can't see how this is going to be effective enough. 1

I think they'll add in some kind of travel restrictions - which will be just in time to prevent me from going on holiday - AGAIN!!!
paulkerton Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 They keep doing announcements to let shoppers know that some staff and customers may have conditions that preclude social distancing Eh? I get that it might preclude masks, but not keeping a social distance is just rude. It's like when they took the measures down to "1 metre plus" and I couldn't help but think "But I wouldn't want a stranger within 1 metre of me anyway, that's my personal space..." 1
LeMarchand Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Eh? I get that it might preclude masks, but not keeping a social distance is just rude. I suppose that someone with something like Downs might not understand personal space (?), but suspect that it's just to discourage people from criticising the idiots who can't possibly wait a few seconds for someone to move out of the way.

Yeah, possibly but its the exception rather than the rule.
StevieM Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 ... it's just to discourage people from criticising the idiots who can't possibly wait a few seconds for someone to move out of the way. Ahem, you mean people with Irwin Syndrome*. *I really want it now!
LeMarchand Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Yeah, possibly but its the exception rather than the rule. Exactly! The percentage of people with such conditions is nowhere near the percentage of ignorant peasants in the shops. Ahem, you mean people with Irwin Syndrome*. No, they're just :censored:s.
