Just because we work in a school doesn't mean we have to act like kids with bragging rights. Some of you claim to have ridiculous server ratios to pcs. They probably cost more to run in electricity than buying a shiny new one. Its quality not quantity that counts. Shall we count packets next? I suspect some of you have less switches than servers.

 

It's a shame you wasted your time signing up then isn't. The original poster asked for these figures to help out. Some people may have inherited the servers they have and not able to consolidate them yet. Please think carefully before posting in the future. - Ben

Made me chuckle too, was going to post something stupid like 65 servers, 400 desktops and 250 kids.

There is absolutely no correlation between size of school and how much IT support is provided.

Some of you seem to be ridiculously overwhelmed, and some of you, *ahem* seem to have almost more techs than machines!!

And what is it with all these servers?

If it wasn't for the fact that I might be feeding a troll I would spend time pointing out that members might have little idea how other schools operate, what sort of infrastructure is in place and how they are expected to perform their jobs. I might even go on to talk about things like best practice, or trying to get comparison to your job to help you fight your case when trying to get the salary and conditions you deserve ...

 

But I can't be bothered. I just thought I would make a pointless post.

Geez, reading this thread makes me envious. Our current tech staff is 1 Administrator [does mostly grant and paper work], and 1 technician [me] for...

 

- About 1,000 computers/laptops [Win/Mac] and probably looking at getting around 120 more with summer purchases and 300 with a CFF grant.

 

- Around 500 Ink Jet/Networked Laser printers

 

- 10 Win 2003 Servers

 

- 1 Novell Netware 6.0 Server [Groupwise 6.5 - being replaced this summer, THANK GOD!]

 

- 50+ projectors

 

- Other network equipment [switches, firewall box, cabling]

 

And..

 

Probably a bunch of other stuff I'm overlooking.

@ces973: That's pretty hardcore! The way that I was lead to understand it in the US was that computer networks ran across districts with centralised support teams and the ability for students to access any machine in any school - this obviously isn't the case in your situation. Do you have additional SLAs in place for things like desktop maintenance and server maintenance which allows you the time to troubleshoot smaller problems and manage the SLAs?

Nope, just the 2 staff for right now. We are looking to add another staff member if the CFF grant goes through. Most of our desktops/laptops have a 3 year on-site warranty, so if anything goes wrong with the machines, hardware wise, the company will come on site and fix the issue. But, of course, we have to diagnose the problem first.

 

Most of our servers are centrally located, most are in our high school, but we have 7 different buildings, the closest is a mile or two away.

Most of our teachers have a personal ink jet printer at their desk. I would love to get rid of them and have lasers in parts of each building, but our teachers would fight that tooth and nail. With walking, and printing off student information, it just wouldn't fly.
