Surely thats impractical if you have several hundred workstations?

Hi Guys / Gals, Having some problems with some of our machines and WSUS. We have a WSUS server setup and running on a 2008 R2 server. We tell our machines to use this by group policy. If I do a rsop on the clients, I can see they have picked up this policy. However, looking at our firewall logs I see a lot of clients going out to the net using "ms-update" (Its a Palo Alto firewall so it can identify traffic/apps regardless of destination port). Looking at the WSUS console, it can see all the machines and has seen them all recently. It reports most of them are 99%. This is fine as I never expect to see them at 100%. Im just a bit confused as to why machines are going out to the net. Is there a difference between windows update and ms-update? I know Microsoft release updates for other vendors / drivers etc. Could this be what the clients are going outside for? Any ideas?!?

Hi Guys, I have a couple of VMs running on ESXi 4. The datastore is a local disk but I am not happy just leaving it there. I dont want to have to pay for a full backup solution as we cannot afford it. A regular backup isnt really needed either, just a manual one every couple of days will do as the data doesnt change a lot. I was thinking of connecting an NFS share from an applicance we have but would it just be a case of telling it to move the folder on the datastore to this new datastore running NFS? I am quite happy to do this manually every few days. Any help would be greatly appreciated. m1d

Giving the converter a go. Bit confused as to which options to use though. I have selected "VMWare Workstation or other VMWare Virtual machine" and given it the path to the .vmx file. Then I have selected a source destination for the files. I am not too sure what type VM to convert it to tho. When choosing the VM product to convert to I only have the option to convert to workstation, server, player or fusion. It doesnt list ESX as being supported anywhere and the highest version is goes to is 6.5, not 7 as was suggested? Bit confused

Morning, I have an SGE Airtight networks virtual appliance in the form of various .vmdk / .vmsd / .vmx / .vmxf files. How do I go about getting this up and running as a virtual machine. When creating a virtual machine you obv get the option to select which OS it is running. However, I have always created a VM from an ISO file at let it boot from a CD. How do i get the above files in to create the VM? Cheers :)

ESXi is the free hypervisor that VMWare offer. ESX is the full version with all the bells and whistles, vmotion etc. ESXi can do this but only for 60 days I believe. Then it just defaults back to the basic hypervisor, which for testing etc is perfectly fine. vSphere is the new client released with vmwares 4.0 products I think. VI3 is the last generation equivelent.

hmmz The problem I am having is that myself and our DNS server are on a different subnet than the ESX host. We have a Palo Alto firewall bridging the networks and doing the routing. However, sessions can be created from this network to the ESX boxes network, but sessions cannot be created going the other way. Traffic can flow between both subnets but only if the session is created by a host on this subnet. Am i going to have to setup a DNS server on the same subnet as the ESX box? I assume I can keep the ESX hosts as localdomain.

Connecting using vSphere. ESX V4 and vSphere V4. Ahh, the DNS server it was given by DHCP is an infoblox unit. This will need an A record adding?

Thanks for all the pointers guys. Having a slightly diff problem now... When starting the console window for a VM I have created I get the following error in the console window... "Unable to connect to the MKS: Timeout While attempting read." Any idea what this means? Never used ESXi before, always vmware server and never encountered this error.

You Legend DMcCoy. Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. :) We only have 1 ESXi host and all I want to do is manage it using vSphere. vCentre doesn't even come into the mix. I cant do vmotion etc anyway because I have activated the free ESXi license so it is no longer running in evaluation mode.

Seems to be some conflicting answers on this I guess I will just keep using vSphere until it ceases to work. Is there any way to view the vsphere license info? I can only see the ESX license info.

Damn Theres no where I can see that it says this. I am not using VCentre server as I only have 1 host so vsphere is connecting straight to it. Is there no other way to create / manage virtual machines and resources other than vsphere?

Hi Guys, I am playing with ESXi as a virtualisation solution and have a quick question about licensing. I installed ESXi 4 no problems. It installs in evaluation mode so it has all the bells and whistles for 60 days. I entered the licnese code I obtained when i downloaded ESXi 4.0 so its a perm license. i dont need all the flashy stuff at the mo, just the hypervisor. I then browsed to the servers IP and downloaded vSphere. Installed this no probs and connected to the host. My question is this....is vSphere free to use? or is it going to stop working after 60 days? Bit confused tbh!! Thankyooooou

Dont think I have any msi's lying around I can test with, btw, Today I am now getting this in the event log... The install of application CrashPlan from policy Install CrashPlan Client failed. The error was : This action is only valid for products that are currently installed. and Failed to apply changes to software installation settings. Software changes could not be applied. A previous log entry with details should exist. The error was : This action is only valid for products that are currently installed. Puzzling.

GAH! Do you think dropping the domain controller out a 2nd story window would help?

both myself and this computer have read permissions at the share and ntfs levels.

Gpresult says the computer policy has been applied and there are no errors in the event log

Afternoon peeps, Having a problem rolling out a piece of software via GP. I have created a test OU and stuck my machine in it. I have then created a new GPO and added the msi package and left it as assigned, not published and made sure it was linked to the testOU. Initially I had a problem in that I was getting an error in the rsop after a gpupdate /force /boot saying that computer settings couldnt be applied because of an access denied message. I got around this by changing the domain controller policy by adding 'Authenticated Users' (which should include all domain computers?) to the list of objects allowed to access the domain controller over the network. Now, whenever I do a gpupdate /force /boot it actually reboots but still doesn't apply the software. There are no errors in the event log and rsop has no errors but the software installation isnt listed. Bit confused and dont know what else to try? Anything you can suggest would be muchly appreciated Cheers

Morning Guys, Had a rather random request. I have been asked to sort a wallpaper for the staff desktops that includes a contact list that updates dynamically. It needs to pull its data from a txt or xls file so it can be updated on the fly. Does anyone know of an app that does this or am I going to be telling them 'no'? Oh, and lol. They also want it to be "transparant" so they can still see their desktop background Jon

Thanks for the answers all. The problem is we do not use folder redirection at all. The users 'home' area is mapped via a script on login. It is simply a network share mapped to a drive which only they have permission to write to. Its not a 'home' folder in the microsoft sense of the word. I.E in Active Directory under the profile tab, everyones home folder path is empty. What do you think my best course of action is? Should I set everyones home folder path in AD to their share on the network and then enable folder redirection from My Docs to said folder? I think im write in assuming that redirected folders are synced and made available offline by default? Cheers Jon
