I don't think its possible to tamper with the data esafe records either. yes it runs on a standalone server but the data recorded is safe on the HDD. The secrus box can also be opened easily enough. On a side note, does anyone use esafe in the Southampton / Hampshire as the school we were going to to have a look, the network manage is off sick to the 24th and we need to spend the money before the end of the month. They have not informed us that we need to update. They simply told us to wait for them to release a new update. We are running 5.42 atm.

We have been in contact with Securus several times. they have either not answered the phone or just told us there is nothing they can do until a software update is released. Sigh

Afternoon Guys, We currently have a Securus trial running here. What a load of rubbish. Group managment is a pain. It constantly locks up and needs a hard reboot. Its reporting is sloooooooow. We still have violations coming that were captured over a month a go, sometimes more. It only seems to report a violation once the same child has violated and then logged in to the same machine at a later time. This means a child could be in real trouble and we would not get the report from securus until they log back in to the right machine. We have been looking at alternatives and were given an on-line demo of something called eSafe Education (http://www.esafeeducation.co.uk). They are owned by Zentek, who support schools ICT and also do a lot of the computer forensic work for the police force. Their product looks far more advanced than Securus. It already has the ability to auto email certain staff when a type of alert comes in. Different staff can be added for different types of violation. You can tell it to que alerts so it will only email a member of staff if say 10 alerts have been captured. This would be ideal for less important stuff as you don't want an email every time a child types "fuck" in to their computer (little darlings). It also already does image recognition, which Securus keeps telling us is on the cards. You also have the option of buying a software only package, which is cheaper or they can supply a simple HP server with the product. It all comes in at about the same price as Securus. it just seems to me to be a much more whole product than the one offered by Securus. I was just wondering if anyone else is using it / thinking of using it in the near future. We have been offered a visual demonstration by Zentek at a school near us that already have it installed. There is also a cheap piece of software called Autoprint that looks at the AD location field for computers / printers. We just use scripts that a GPO runs when students log on. it finds the VBS on the local machine which points to a VBS on our 2003 print server etc.

That was answered in an ealier post. P4's are two single core chips mated whereas the core2 were designed from the ground up to be multi core and hence run much cooler.

The Core 2 Duos are also extremely overclockable. i have my Q6600 (quad core) running at 3.6ghz with all cores running below 50 degrees on full load. This is with air cooling using a TR Ultra 120 Ex HSF.

try running a network protocol analyizer. If there are a lot of broadcasts coming from the same IP/MAC or broadcasts coming from everyplace then it could be a faulty NIC killing your bandwidth or a loop somewhere in the topology. Are you running spanning tree?

Run Prime95........permantly. It will also tell you if your CPU is stable

Well, its been about 4 days since I synced with MS. All of my updates all say 'this update failed to download' I have played with ISA and added a rule saying all networks, internal and external can send all traffic and this seemed to have no effect. I have tried manually telling random updates to download and it thinks about it for a minute or two then reports it as the download failed, the same as above. We are in hampshire, is anyone else in hampshire having the same problem? Do the council have an upstream server I can use to get the updates, rather than microsoft? Thanks guys.

Thanks for all the responses guys. We already have a computer set in ISA called servers with the servers address ranges added. There is already a rule that allows all protocols outbound to internal/external networks. I would of thought this would of done the trick.

Any idea what sort of rule I need to make in ISA to allow WSUS through?

We do use ISA, but I have set that up. Like i said, it syncs fine but all the updates just say they have not been downloaded. Now I may be getting confused, but if its synced 100% with no errors, the files MUST of been downloaded. All the updates were approved like 2 days a go and still have the red 'x' next to them.

Morning Guys, I am having real issues with WSUS! There are literally hundreds of updates that need to start to go out. The problem is.....I can sync fine with MS and it says its downloaded loads of updates. When approving them however, every single one has a red 'x' next to it and says "This update can be approved but will not be deployed until the files have downloaded" or something to that effect. I have tried reinstalling WSUS, removing the Windows internal DB, everything I can think of. This is on 2003 R2. Pulling my hair out! Jon

Morning Guys, I have a bit of a problem. I need a laptop for work and it needs to be really portable. I have looked at the EEE and the Vye options but to me, a 7" screen is just too small and a 12.1" is too big. I am looking for something around the 10.4" range but am having real trouble finding one in my budget. The only ones I can seem to find are the Toughbooks, and I ain't paying 3k for a laptop. My budget is around £600-£800. I really liked the older Acer Travelmate C110. It is the perfect size but also has tablet functionality, which is good. Unfortuantly, they do not sell these anymore and I am having real trouble finding the modern day equivelent. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks Jon

Its giving me the following in the log.... FTP Thread Created... FTP Connect OK FTP Change Dir OK FTP Direct Transfer (1) Error FTP Operation finished, restarting timer... FTP Thread still alive (1 seconds old)... FTP Grabbing New Frames... It can communicate with the FTP fine as it is creating the filename on there. it just can't seem to send any data to that file. I have upload a jpg manually to the FTP to see if its a firewall problem, and that worked fine. Im stumped!

I am still having issues with this guys I am now giving webcamxp a whirl and am having the same problem. I can get it to upload a jpg to the ftp, but it wont open. It just says it is 0kb in size. This is driving me nuts and to say im getting pissed off is an understatement. Save me!

No one got any idea what could be causing this?

It does seem like a nice little program. I got the trial version. It is connecting to the ftp site ok and uploading the webcam.html file. But when opening in IE the page is just blank. Whenever it tries to upload the file after the set refresh time it tries to connect and comes back with error "Socket Error #10038Socket Operation on non-socket" weird

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the replies. I tried DCAM and managed to get it uploading to our webpage via ftp but the image wouldnt display. It just had the red x in it. Looking at the file, the jpg was created but was always 0kb in size. I have just installed Media Encoder but am having a few probs figuring it out. I can't see how to get it on to a webpage. Any ideas? thanks

Morning All, The science department have asked me to setup a webcam of some eggs hatching that streams on to our webpage. Does anyone know of the best way to do this? Is there any free software worth getting for this task. Its a logitech cam, not sure how old but seems decent enough quality. Thanks

Afternoon all, Before I get on to the post subject, I would just like to introduce myself. I am a technician in a large secondary school in Hampshire. We have around 1300 students and 130 staff (ish). I was at BETT last week and the EEE caught my eye. The small design was facinating and they seemed very robust, which I am sure you are all aware is quite handy in a school environment (we had a kid chuck a laptop at another student a few weeks a go, little darlings). I have a few questions I need answered. First of all, does anyone know when the new models are being released, specifically with XP pre installed and the 8GB solid state + larger screens. I know there are already 8GB versions about but I seem to be unable to find any. Secondly, has anyone built a RIS image to work with the hardware? Does the network card support PXE? And can we use our existing schools agreement to deploy the XP to quite a few EEE's? I have read it is much better to stick with the original linux distro that comes with it, which makes sense. For me, I would be quite happy to do this. This would cause some concerns with students using them tho. Obviosuly, atm they have their access severly limited via group policies etc. This will not work with linux and for example I do not want them to be able to get to the console/shell !! Even if we solve this problem, is it possible for them to get their home drive mapped when they login the way it is done at the moment via policies, depsite being in a linux environment? One more thing, bare with me Does anyone know any companies that would be willing to send me a free 4G/4G Surf so I can trial it / show the people whose responibility it is to look after our budget?
